    Thank you so much!!! Navien wouldn't talk to me, so I had to call a plumber. The plumber sat on HOLD with Navien for more than an hour and a half and went from number 39 in the queue to number 20 in the queue. I made them leave before they could charge me for another hour. After watching your video, I took out the check valve, cleaned it, and smeared a light coating of silicone grease on the inside O-ring, and it's working beautifully again! You are a life saver!

    Wow! Thanks! This was my problem. Removed the check valve from my NPE-240A, it was gunked up and did not move freely with the spring action. Cleaned it with some wd-40 and it loosened up perfectly. The hot water was now able to flow without the mix of the cold. Great info and thanks for the video!

      Yes I got the same treatment. Navien doesn’t support home owners!! They won’t even send you the service manual due to liability! That’s lousy customer support. Sending a manual doesn’t make them liable but they don’t care. Ridiculous!

      I’m leaving this text for people in the future. Go buy an o-ring kit (the one I have is for 134a conversions) from a parts store and disassemble the check valve. Replace the o-ring inside. I noticed the navien supplied o-ring was swelling. Which leads me to believe they have chosen the wrong durometer/ materials. This swelling stops the plunger inside from closing correctly. Hope this helps and saves some frustration!

I recall reading a forum that said Supplies Depot sold them so you might check their website.

    Good video. I had the exact problem. When I went to replace the check valve, the top bit was actually broken off, so I had to take out the tee fitting to clear. Added a couple of minutes but easy enough. Keep an eye on the O-rings if you take off the tee.

    Thank you so much for the helpful video. The check valve for my Navien NPE-240A failed last year, the plumber charged me ~$500 to diagnose and fix. After only 1 year, the same happened with water being just Luke warm. I watched the video, purchased the valve and replaced it. Work well now. Saved me ~$400.
    One thing to note is that the check valve purchased from Boston Heating Supply is not the right one for my 2016 NPE-240A or the valve shown in the video ( I purchased and it did not fit). I found the right valve in SUPPLIES DEPOT, part # 30008360A. I got two since this valve seems to have short life of ~1 year.

    My wife had not showered in two days due to long days at work. She did her work out last night and no hot water. Thinking it was the heat exchanger I did a two hour flush but nothing. Did the bypass and viola hot water. My check valve was disintegrated when I pulled it but at least could get half of it back in to stop water from leaking. I ordered the check valve with overnight shipping and will replace it and a few other o rings. I've had my Navien for 7 years and this is first time a part has failed. We have extremely hard water. My wife and family just want to say thank you!!!!!

    Just paid out the nose to have a plumber replace the check valve. Looks like quite a simple replacement that I can do should I need it in the future! Like they say though, you pay for what they know, not what they do. A lot of people may not want to mess with this, but I'm here to learn!

    Thank you for this video! I had the same issue with my Navien NPE 240a right after a copper pipe pinhole leak on the hot water line (maybe one caused the other?). In any case I did a lot of searching on the internet for what the problem might be, and this video was the most helpful result. I ordered part # 30008360A from tanklessparts for $6 + shipping. Once I got it though I chickened out and wanted a licensed plumber to troubleshoot with Navien Support first (they wouldn't troubleshoot with me). Took them only 5 min to notice that the GPM (gallons per min) was not what it should be, and the tech said it could either be the flow sensor or the check valve. The tech also recommended a thorough flush with one of those more expensive products (not just white vinegar), something like Haymaker. I told the plumber I'd get the flow sensor and have him come back to install both later, but after he left I felt the check valve installation was most likely the culprit. Once I removed the check valve it was plain to see the spring was unseated, and there may have also been a bit of the plastic missing too. After installation of the new check valve, my hot water is back to normal! I could have saved a bit of money if I wouldn't have chickened out but oh well.
    Couple of tips for the installation. I would recommend draining the water from the water heater fully, probably from the bottom drain plug. I tried draining from the service ports but that didn't drain it all the way and I ended up having some water come out after removing the check valve. That was a little scary because it wasn't just a few drops, it was pouring out and I was worried it would damage some electronics or wires. I made sure to dry the area thoroughly with towels and a fan before flipping that internal power switch back on. Second tip is don't forget to remove the cap that the check valve has on it. I know it's a silly tip, but at first I didn't know why the part didn't fit, and then I realized the cap was still on :P

    this helped me immensely, many thanks. In my case, it only seemed to be the shower that wasn't hot enough, the nearby tub always worked great (higher flow). This led us down the expensive but fruitless path of replacing the shower cartridge, which didn't work, then the whole valve, which also didn't do the job. Finally, a $7 part that I installed myself with the help of this video solved it.

    Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I had the same issue you described.
    I previously had sediment in my system from the well pump and flushed and cleaned the Navien twice.
    It wasn’t until your video that I learned about the check valve. I removed mine, cleaned it out separately and moved the valve manually to make sure the spring still worked. It seemed ok so I reinserted it and it’s back to working like new.
    Your kind generosity in sharing this information solved the problem and lifted a cloud of uncertainty.
    Saved me a costly service call and made my day.

I truly thank you for sharing your experience with us. That tank is a buffer tank. The 6 oclock and 9 valve is Ext and Int respectively. I went one step further and activated Intelligent Preheating by toggling dip switch #2 - so far so good. Thanks again...

      Yeap mine acted up six years later. I never knew better to flush it yearly. So that speaks volumes for the unit, as long as we do this yearly maintenance we should be able to get 20 or more years out of it...I wish navien had sent a reminder to maintain the unit.

    Great job. I had the exact same problem on the same unit and this solved it. Couldn't pull the old check valve out from the T assembly where it sits , had to pull the whole thing which was relatively easy. New Check valve was $5 + shipping from Boston Heating Supply .

    My heater was reading lower flow than I was getting, and luke warm water coming out. Replaced the flow sensor with no result. Just popped out the check valve and lo-and-behold the o-ring that sits around the valve was partly off causing it to leak. Popped it back on and flow rate came straight back up. I'm assuming that it will go again pretty soon so I'll get a replacement ordered. Thanks for saving my sanity!

    • @TDScotty
      @TDScotty  3 роки тому +1

      Hello. If you are troubleshooting the check valve, then just put switch number 1 in the down position and then turn that bypass valve (the one I pointed out) to the 6 o'clock position. Per Navien tech support, they indicated that was the only switch that needs to be flipped. If at that point you have hot water, then you have a bad check valve and it needs to be replaced. Hope that helps!

    I have a terrible experience with Navien customer service, tried couple times now, they DON'T speak to or deal with home owner, it has to be a licensed plumber, for my situation, even a plumber called, can't find any issue with the water heater which I have problem with, my heater NPE240A is only 1-1/2 years old, the problem is "water sandwich" when you taking a shower, (first water comes out with your preset temperature, during shower water will getting cooler, and cooler than hot again, and repeat several timesb/4 finishh shower ), thanks for your vedio, I need to test it with your procedure. I am writing these is because Navien WON'T speak with home owner.

      Sorry to hear about your experience with Navien Customer Service. It seems that some folks get help and others don't seem to have much luck with them. I hope the video helped you and you are able to diagnose your issue. Your water heater is not very old and I wouldn't think that you should be having issues with it at this point. Good Luck and thank you for watching!

  • @richgray5762

    Navien will only work with a licensed plumber. You don' have recirc plumbing so you should leave it 6 o'clock, 1off 2 on

    • @TDScotty
      @TDScotty  Рік тому +1

      Navien worked with me, but they certainly don't work with everyone. That is why I made this video- so that if you can't get support, at least you have this as a resource. And you are correct, I don't have a recirc plumbing line, but I do have the optional internal tank- and per Navien, that requires 9 O'clock. That is how my unit came from the factory, set at 9, and per them that is how it should be set. And you are correct, I do not have a recirc line, but if I did that changes the game. In that case I would need 1 off and 2 on. But again, the setup I showed is for an internal tank setup like mine ONLY. Sorry if this was confusing to you.

      @@TDScotty what telephone number did you use? BTW verified dip settings all off no recirc,1 on 9o'click internal pump no recirc line, 1 off 2 on 6o'clock recirc line, 1&2 on intelligent pre- heat.

    Be careful with the so-called manual bypass valve shown repositioning from the 9 o'clock to the 6 o'clock position. I tried this but got into trouble at least with my NPE 240A. When I moved the valve to the 6 o'clock position the circulation pump ran continuously dead-headed and became very hot almost to the point of burning up. Beware!!!

    • @TDScotty
      @TDScotty  3 роки тому +1

      Wow. That's the first I have heard of this. Did you do as Navien tech support suggested, and put selector switch Number 1 in the "down" position before moving your bypass valve to the 6 O'clock position? If you did not do that first, then maybe that caused the circ pump and excess heat issue? That's all I can think of.... Anyway, thank you for alerting us to a potential issue there.

    • @ericKD2WHP_ham_radio
      @ericKD2WHP_ham_radio 3 роки тому

      Actually I didn't change the switch position so looks like I caused the pump issue.

    • @josejoubert4395
      @josejoubert4395 3 роки тому

      You should have gotten an error message preventing the unit from running...there's really no need to set it to the 6 position, that setting is strictly for when you install an external buffer tank and set the dip switch to recognize it.
