Nirvana - Old Age [Kurt Solo Acoustic Demo]

Вставка
  • Опубліковано 6 лют 2011
  • 'Old Age' Recorded sometime in 1992. A demo of a song Kurt would later 'give' to Courtney, due to his dissatisfaction with it. The song in the beginning seems to be an improvisation, followed by a short covered section of 'Low Rider'. Most of these have been converted from lossless audio .FLAC files.

Think how many days and nights he sat there doing this while Tracy Marander slipped food under the door for him, taking care of him then he unexpectedly gets big globally with Krist and Dave and is never the same with the drugs and being with Courtney. Burned out abruptly but I'm glad we got to hear Kurt's music and voice. Sad we didn't get more, just imagine the albums we would've got with REM and others... 😔

This is how you write a song. You gather a few chords or a riff, then you mumble over it for FUCKING HOURS. Best way to formulate a melody. Then translate / rhyme your madness into coherence. Record EVERYTHING you do. X

I think he was a great guitarist...the world is full of people who can play like Jimmy Page, Van Halen/whomever else...not to say those guys aren’t great, they are, but there’s more than one way to play guitar. Kurt was (I think) more into playing what was right for his songs instead of overly technical blues-based soloing...there’s enough of that out there anyway.
I’d also say he was great based on the influence he had. Thousands of kids were inspired to play bc of Cobain (me included). It was really cool to be able to play a passable version of his songs while you were just a beginner. 25 years, give or take, later & I still love playing his music.
Kurt said it himself in an interview...I’m gonna paraphrase bc I can’t remember verbatim, but it was something like “I can’t play like Segovia, but then again, he couldn’t play like me either.”

    • @MBRollo-gg7vk
      @MBRollo-gg7vk 4 роки тому +68

Most of the criticism I hear or read online is from jackasses who think it makes them look cool, or god knows what, to talk shit about Nirvana. I think it has a lot to do with their popularity...there’s always gonna be ppl who shit on everything popular to make themselves look hip. If Nirvana had recorded the exact same songs/albums as an indie band they’d consider him a genius. Ppl are fuckin’ weird.

Kurt was a songwriter out of the ordinary... Most pop songs, punk rock songs, etc are written using the same old chord progressions, like 1-4-5 for example, but look at Kurt's chord progressions and melodies, it is just on another level !
Take Lithium... That chord progression is really weird, but it works perfectly, and he was able to write some beautiful melodies on top of it all... He was a real genius !!!

he really exparaments with his voice in this song, guitar too, it's like he was planning on expanding his variety. a lot of people say Kurt's music is simply and nothing special, but they are numbnuts, they can't think deep enough to see the true genius Kurt was, he really didn't show it much, but he was a very gifted and an amazing man. I Love the hell out of you Kurt RIP buddy, we all miss you! He is an idol of mine and I look at him as superior to human, he was such a great person and so modest. Just and amazing human and a such an unfathomably great loss not just to the music community but the world as a father, a person, an artist, a musician, a story teller and just so much more. I thought the same. Kurt's music can sound "normal" and "nothing's epic", but it gives me a strange feeling that I've never had before. I think Kurt was a very instinctive musican, he wrote what he truly thinks and feels at that time, you can see that most of his lyrics didn't make sense, (I think he didn't try to edit his lyrics at all), so what's he wrote is the truest feelings!

You can say what you want, but I'm probably always gonna think nirvana was simple. Awesome, but simple. When people write songs, they should just do whatever they think. There's no other process I know of. He seemed to usually have stuck with power chords mostly, but the "melody" (I'm not good with terms, but I think that's the word?) was often great. That's what got them famous, the melody and tone. His voice was kinda unique, which also helped. I don't know what Kurt was like, but I do know what his music was like. He found the rhythm/melody/whatever and did it in the notes he wanted, and used that to go with what's on his mind. Just like every other musician. Some musicians go fast, and have epic solos. like Metallica, or Slayer. And others can stick with power chords, and maybe mix it up with extra notes and maybe a solo. Like Nirvana, or Green Day.

But the song he was working on before old age starts I think would be an epic idea for him to combine that with old age just as is on this demo. Like he does that verse and transitions into old age like he did. I dont know if that was what he was actually doing but if he was that was pure genius

my favorite piece of recording in all of acoustic history. the song after tuning is so beautiful angels descend on pedals of flowers and the winded vocals float words, to which i refrain.

The Yodel song has this same riff, I see how kurt made his music now. He plays random stuff and puts it all together. Pure art.

+KOSCade Art is achieved through discarding poor content and recycling the good. You don't pick up a guitar and create a finished product on attempt #1. He didn't release yodel song, if he was alive today you wouldn't have heard it or known it existed. Ridding the rubbish and collecting and assembling the gems is the artistic process, and leads the art to its peak - which, in Cobain's opinion, were the albums he chose to release. He wasn't even happy with the final recording of "old age".

Literally, I am only an amature songwriter.. It is so relieving to know that this is how others do it. I'll write a chorus and will leave it for like a month, then have verse and add them together etc Once had a riff circling in my head for two weeks before adding lyrics.

    • @daywar13
      @daywar13 8 років тому +5

+Daniel that's what I was getting at in my comment. He takes stuff he's made up, and uses what he's played to make something bigger. Basically recycling parts.

His sense of melody was so beyond anyone else I've ever heard. And then you combine that with a voice that is somehow strong, honest, and vulnerable all at the same time. I don't understand most of the lyrics, but it feels like what's being conveyed here is a brutal yet beautiful truth. It brings me to tears.

Mumblings (lyrics?) of a melomaniac (My personal translation w/ interpretive discretion of lyrics)
    Yes, I'm leaving
    Filthy hands...
    Read to me...
    And miss me...
    Prefer me sad...
    And I wouldn't hate...
    That you'd miss me...
    Don't leave it and be...
    And I am afraid
It's a fire, our house is gone
    And I refrain
Are you God? Are you good? Get away no more
And I broken vainness meet the floor
And now I can barely be alone
I could want to obey being
Freeze me in flowers beneath the grave
Be silent bed and I will sleep
Be a seed in the flower and reap away
    And I... I know
    Hey...
Keep the town to one more spacious
One more hour and I'll feign my service
Someday I wound my way to something
It's not kind to believe my service
Come inside of our inner circles
Someday I won't be high, no way, it's over
    She seems to read minds
And I'm dead, dumb, and blind
    Way to frame my use
    She's the same
    Old age (x3)
Some are killed and some are wounded
Some work hard and I feign my service
Someday I won't find my way to sober
Listen, care, he believes my sermons
One more hours in the week my servant
Someday I wound my way to something
    She seems to read minds
And I'm dead, dumb, and blind
Face to face in the mirror
    We survey
    Old age (x4)
'Cause you're just afraid to see you're all weird
Comin' higher way, I'm vacant seed
One more hour and I face my service
Comin' down to relieve my servant
Someday I wound my way to no day
Some kind of terrible thing my service
One more hour and I won't bitch service
Someday I wound my way to someday
    She seems to read minds
And I'm dead, dumb, and blind
    Way to frame my use
    Jesus saves
    Old age (x2)
    Jesus saves
    Old age (x3)
P.S. I had originally wrote this down years ago (Damn, time is slick). Paper and pencil is still neat, except for when you lose that single transcript. Although, deciphering these lyrics again helps get reacquainted, as a positive. This Cobain song (performance/composition/musica), for me, is easily one of his "deeper" and more thought-provoking and haunting. As a fan of Nirvana, it's hard to not think of this song as we all grow older with age.
