      Its not underrated, its now actually celebrated. I'm sure people exist who dont like it, but I dont know an of them. And the fanbase grows with every decade that passes. Its one of those films I stop at and watch when it comes up on TV - again and again and again.

      I'm angry Master and Commander didn't get a longer segment. Like I can't remember what is what from the making of the film, I would have loved a deeper dive covering it all so I could appreciate it more

    • @dwatts64
      @dwatts64 3 місяці тому +12

      @@GaniscolI agree that it's appreciated *NOW* but at the time it came out I don't know if it even managed to recoup its budget. I know it was supposed to be the first part of a series and the first one did poorly enough they cancelled the rest of them. I know it reviewed VERY well, but the audience didn't come out to see it. So maybe it's not underrated in the literal sense, as the ratings were great, but it's certainly underappreciated in its time.

      Talking about Master and Commander. They shot a sequence at the Galápagos Islands, where the Doctor was looking for a rare bird. The landscape looked magnificent but such bird who indeed exists in the Galapagos it’s not found where they did the shot. And you can clearly see a wonky flightless cormorant just badly composed on a cliff. Which sounds funny and ironic considering all the trouble they through to make the movie look the way it did.

Almost all of phase 4/5 has good effects it's just absolutely garbage writing I mean quantumania was his first goddamn screenplay that he wrote as they went, multiverse of madness was chucked together in a week, it's a joke haha
      All the other teams may be on their A game but if it's in service of a terrible script none of it matters, but Loki actually had character, worldbuilding, room to breathe and not just boom boom flashy garbage

    The brilliant thing about M&C is that the effects are amazing, but never draw attention to themselves. They just disappear into the film and become a part of it, and the viewer simply accepts what they're seeing as the real thing. It's a film first, story and characters, and the effects exist to support that, blending right into and supporting the story and the characters. One of my favorite movies of all time.

      LOL it won - in 2004 Oscars, it won: Best Director, Best Picture, Best Sound Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, Best Sound Mixing, Best Costume, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Costume. So it won 10 Oscars. It's not exactly forgotten or underrated.

    • @DoctorXProducer
      @DoctorXProducer 3 місяці тому

      @@ManchurianCounterweight It was nominated for 10, but only won Cinematography and Sound Editing. It opened #2 in the box office against 'Elf' and quickly dropped to #6 with 2 weeks. Given that Pirates of Caribbean came out the same year and has so many unnecessary sequels over the past 2 decades while Master and Commander had none, it is safe to say that it is underrated when it comes to general audiences.

    • @dwatts64
      @dwatts64 3 місяці тому

      @@ManchurianCounterweightit is very much a forgotten classic. When people talk about great movies and great VFX, I *never* hear mention of 'Master and Commander', but if you mention it, everyone goes "OMG, yes! That movie is amazing!" So it certainly isn't "underrated" in a literal sense, but it's certainly underappreciated/forgotten in the modern day.
      I'm so glad it got the awards it did, because it deserved every one of them, and deserved the sequels that were planned. It's just a shame the audience didn't go out to see it. I actually think the timing was the biggest problem with that movie. If it came out today even as-is, it would be a HUGE hit. But in 2003 it's coming out at the wrong time, right alongside 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. Your audience gets to choose between 'Master and Commander' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. So of course M&C didn't draw the audience, they got their Swashbuckling in Pirates, and M&C is for a very different crowd. M&C is the better movie, but Pirates is the better family summer blockbuster.

      The story is kinda weak when you consider they build up Kang so much in late season 1, early season 2, only to then focus on a macguffin all season long. And the Kang threat kinda evaporates by the end. Some of it may be because Marvel was already giving themselves the chance to move away from Kang but it's pretty jarring.

      Loki S2 is one of the first things from the MCU in a while that felt like it even had a script, and Loki season 1 was a complete trainwreck. I mean LS2 was making really subtle references to past lines and themes offhand, patched plotholes that honestly I wasn't even sure they noticed were plotholes, managed to nearly wrap up Kang given the circumstances, completed a pretty bloody solid arc with Loki by just straight pulling it out their ass, and got a full bloody creation myth to go along with it to boot.
      Definitely did have it's weakpoints, but most of those were sort of inherited. (for instance Loki staying human/asguardian despite his illusiory magic supposedly being disabled) Of course it also had some weakpoints that definitely weren't inherited, like how they literally just replaced his powers with green glowly blasts. I mean that episode 2 chase *_finally_* let him be competent again and really played up that trickster and illusion magic, but then right afterwards they just completely forget about it again and go back to glowy hand waves.

    I can agree on being burnt out on MCU content these days (just because it has been time and time again with bad writing and everything feels disconnected sometimes) but for those who have watched Loki season 2, I'm sure we are all in agreement that you guys should watch it. It's really great, and wraps up Loki's storyline really well. It's far from perfect, but compared to most of the recent films and shows (I can't speak for Echo) it feels complete.

      A big reason why this particular MCU project was so successful and relatively cheap is because they didn't go through any of the common yet extensive reshoots.
      It was all directed perfectly from the story to the CGI. It took its time and was rewarded for it.

    "Master and Commander" is a great example of VFX being there to show a story and not the other way around, like in many movies where they write a story around a bunch of "cool VFX's shots". And it's impressive how despite being a historic movie, so it will be VFX's heavy, they still managed to make the VFX look subtle, as in they don't jump at you just because they could. They are made to serve the shots and not to impress the audience. Amazing movie.

    The director of Master and Commander knows what he was doing, the effort they put into doing as much of the work as possible in practical and then dialing the special effects back so that the focus is on the story telling is how it should be done, shame that the movie wasn't a hit, it could have turned into a series like pirates of the Caribbean and the best part is that they already have multiple books to adapt. That’s the preexisting replica (built in the 1970s) that the production company bought for the film and refitted to make it the HMS Surprise. They also had a full scale replica on gimbals for the interiors and top deck work which they set up on top of a cliff side in Baja California so they could get the ocean horizon view. The sailing version they kept at readiness so that when conditions were right they could sail it off into the ocean and get their shots. Unparalleled work.
      They also recorded all new sound effects for the cannon hits and near misses, rather than using the old archive SFX everyone else uses.

      Even with Ziva you don't get the results they show on their videos. The reason it's not Ziva is kojima is using a specific actress and he scanned her. What Ziva does is give you scans essencially with all the mapping done properly. If you're already scanning yourself, why use ziva?
      What corridor is missing here, and in their shots, is a lot of tweaking, they didn't even DNA tweak to make sure their face translates well to the model. TLOU2 also had this were the mocap looked kinda janky, and then they tweaked it and it's one of the best looking games animation wise. You can probably go further with machine learning as well, I'm kinda baffled noone did this yet and that's what I wonder if kojima actually did. Like a fast pipeline for metahumans and high end gear

The guy most famous for House (1977). In this school movie the main girl is a psychic and has to battle other psychics in surreal landscapes and insanity that only Ohbayashi could dream up. And in the climax it just goes totally bonkers in ways I wish modern studio films would dare to approach today.
