Kung Fu Hustle is the best example I have seen of a movie taking the whimsical and far fetched reality that animation allows. It's fun, has great practical effects and memorable story and characters!

Exactly! And rewatching Kung Fu Hustle made me realize what bothered me about the action in One Piece. It's too slow. The kicks and punches don't feel powerful, the slices are too slow. Ilove the show but the action just didn't quite sell.

Pacific Rim definitely feels like a live action anime. Come on, Mako saying "For my family" in Japanese before busting out a sword on her Jaeger and slicing a kaiju in half--all while in low-earth orbit--is the most anime thing I've seen in a movie.
Honestly nothing in a movie has felt quite like that scene since then. It was powerful!

weird how the only examples people can give of "live action anime" are of non anime, and cash grabs that have nothing to do with their name like dragonball evolution. Almost like these guys have absolutely no clue what they are talking about.

Most of what people feel got the anime feeling right turns out out be movies that have no anime connection what so ever. In this category I feel Shaolin Soccer and Pacific Rim have a lot of the feeling you get of an anime. Now I haven't seen the live action One Piece or anything Speed Racer whatsoever, so I can't really say anything about those. But what keeps being repeated over and over is Speed Racer for a live action adaptation, and Kung-Fu Hustle for having anime vibes, but no anime roots...

For me, Speed Racer immediately comes to mind as one of the best anime to film adaptations of all time. Really felt like I was watching a live action anime. But I know you guys did a whole episode on that already.
This was what I was going to write, and I feel it's the obvious winner.
For me, it's gotta be the first TMNT movie of the 90s. When it came out, it was everything all the kids wanted it to be. I mean, technically not really an anime, unless you also consider the TV series continuation in Japan, TMNT: Superman Legend.
The other ones are the Guyver movies, the first one released in the 80s with Mark Hamill and the second movie released in the 90s starring David Hayter (voice of Solid Snake). They both captured the gritty feel of the manga and anime, and also had some pretty intense gore to match them.
As for Speed Racer, it was very far removed from being the best anime adaptation. It got so much backlash for how it doesn't feel like Speed Racer when it came out that it bombed at the box office. lol
Alita Battle Angel is right there next to Speed Racer as top tier Adaptation

great exemple of people not criticising the right thing... people bashed the movie, but now its a classic made right. the same as mortal kombat. back then everyone bashed it, now its considered one of the best movie adaptation of a video game. speed racer was such a movie... people bashing it for the wrong reasons, then years later it prooves to be greatest classics. i hated the speed racer cartoons... the movie, made me love speed racer and i could really see the cartoon into it but with an adult twist.
@corridor crew RE: Hair simulations for Little Mermaid.
In the simulation artist's defense, they were mostly forced to make unnatural hair movements due to client feedback, we always simmed the hair beautifully fluid and then disney would give the stupidest feedback for it to achieve a certain shape after. Also we always had to make sure continuity between shots was a thing, very frustrating but we did our best. Totally agree about the skin stuff though. Also bad client choices. Pretty much we pitched to fix all these things, like colour falloff and whatnot, but they always pushed back. Very frustrating when we know we can achieve beautiful images.
It's honestly just sad to see all these live action adaptations of animated Disney movies. Maleficent was great, but it wasn't an adaptation: it was a retelling. If they'd do retellings, that'd be completely different. They tried it again with Dumbo but it went off the rails into really meaningless territory to just check a bunch of boxes they thought people would want. (It wasn't 'woke' or whatever, it was just... really dumb storytelling that didn't go anywhere) Sad to see what's happening with all of these movies, especially with the backward messages they seem to convey now. Cinderella really pushes a message of "put up with the abuse and be super nice to your abusers" which I found incredibly odd.
They're just boring money grabs and I can't stand them.

@@Mythodyn Same. I grew up loving both the manga and the anime, but I can't even think about them anymore without feeling gross. Doesn't help that one of my favorite songs came from the live action's soundtrack. I also live in Japan and right now, there's RK stuff everywhere because they're making a reboot anime and every part of my brain is just like, "Really? We're forgiving and forgetting like nothing happened, Japan? Hundreds of DVDs and he only had to pay a tiny fine and take a few months off of work." It'd be one thing if I felt like he actually felt bad about what he did, but he obviously doesn't.
The first live action Kenshin gave me chills. It was so good

The problem is that everything in Netflix needs to look the same, so they have the same desaturated colors in all the shows but anime is generally the opposite
I mean one piece embraces the sillyness, its always dealt with darker elements and heavy themes but never stops having fun and Luffys DF was specifically chosen for that reason by Oda. The casting was perfect, I liked the designs, but honestly this was the only arc really possible..alabasta will be so hard, let alone water 7 or anything past that.
I've loved OP for over 20 years, it's the top for a reason and has more depth and creativity in one arc than dbz ever had, but they did the best you really could
I'm surprised few people are talking about the OTHER big stylistic influence on the Netflix One Piece: Pirates Of The Caribbean. They clearly took a lot of visual ideas from POTC, and the soundtrack is *very* Zimmer-esque at points. Personally, I think that was a smart choice, in terms of broad audience appeal. (Rather than just appealing to OP fans.)
Although I do wish they'd used more of the original soundtrack. I was disappointed by the lack of "Overtaken."
It should be remembered as well that they aren’t adapting the anime into live action, they are adapting the original manga into live action. As a fan of both the manga and the anime I found the live action adaptation a lot of fun and felt different enough to be enjoyable watching it all again.
I've read the manga and only watched a little of the anime, and I have to admit I was kind of disappointed by the show but I can't really pin down why. The sets and effects are fantastic, but the acting and direction are just so....weird. I get that they're changing the characterization in some places and an adaption has every right to do that, but every conversation in the show is just unreasonably awkwardly paced. If I close my eyes I feel like I'm watching a crappy fan film.
I personally want a reboot with different actors, with ZORO, MIhawk and Zeff i would say should be kept the same, replace the rest...And have Zoro say the damn attack names...
NAH Zoro’s actor was probably one of the worst and weakest casting in the live action. His line delivery and expressions were very weak and awkward. His vocal fry was very cringe and obvious that he was trying really hard to make his voice deeper. His emotional scenes in episode 5 was so damn cringey jfc. The reason why the actor is so popular in Japan is because of his face and not his acting skills. The showrunners kind of hinted in interviews that they had no choice but to cast Mackenyu (Zoro’s actor) because they wanted a Japanese actor who can speak fluent English. They saw multiple auditions but the heavy accents was the problem so they had no choice but to cast him lol. We could have gotten a better Zoro imo. Nami and Sanji actors were the best actors amongst the strawhats. Reboot the show without Mackenyu Zoro instead.

@@6thHokageJuan BRUH Are you that blinded by Mackenyu's face that you can't see his horrendous acting skills??? Mackenyu is terrible at acting as Zoro. Acting is more than looking like the character they are portraying. Mackenyu is just so bad at line delivery. He can't even cry properly. His emotional scene in Episode 5 was so bad and cringe compared to Nami and Sanji's emotional scenes. He can't even emote well. The only good thing about him is his face. His acting skills is nonexistent, which is surprising because he has a lot experience in acting in films and shows. But I guess that's the advantage of being a nepo baby. I can't believe you are favoring a nepo baby, who got to where he is because of his father, and his bad acting skills.
Scott Pilgrim is clearly one of the best anime inspired movies. How Edgar wright does action in general feels very animated and unlike anything I’ve seen in other live action film makers. He manages to get that keneticism without feeling cheap or parody.

All this time I thought they were great makeup since current Hayden dont look that far off anyway. If the clips were not included in this, I wouldn't have noticed some of the CGI quirks (albeit still very minor).
That itself says something about the quality of work the team has done.
I don't think they did much at all to deage him in OWK. He looked all of 40 something Hayden.
Did they even do any de-aging in the Kenobi series? I remember thinking that he looked exactly like Hayden does now and I did not think that was a bad thing either.
Yeah, because they chose not to de-age Anakin in Kenobi at all.

@@isaiuchiha1490 I say we go all the way back to "the leisure hive" lets see how they react to some paintbox effects from 1980. Paintbox was suprisingly advanced for the era digitizing, editing, and then converting back to analogue all in one.
Been asking for a year, hate Chibnall's story telling but they spent BUCKS on that CGI. If they did an entire episode on Doctor Who CGI from each generation I'm getting that corridor subscription in a heartbeat.

What's crazy to me is that all of the body is CGI so they actually added shine back to the skin to match the face.
Yes. Just look at how the eyes of fishes look under water. They have a weird quality to them of being clear, definitively bordered from the surrounding liquid, yet not shiny at all.
Yes, the eyes should not shine because there is no longer a reflective surface once the eyes are in water. But if her eyes are not shining, then she wouldn’t be a beautiful Disney princess. Same reason they had to make the hair look beautiful all the time instead of messy like what water tends to do to hair.
Hayden, the actor who plays Anakin, also looks really good for his age.
So there really did not need to be too much de-aging done, that's probably why it looks so good.
Well, it's not like you can dial in how much you deage someone. You just slap a digital face mask on them and it's the quality of that mask that determines if it's good or bad.
@@mikosoft It's not really about dialing something in, but the difference in the base of what you are working with and what it needs to look like afterwards.
It's much more difficult to make someone who's 80 look like they are 20, than it is to make someone who looks 35 look 20.

The persons movements and voice, yes, those will look different with age but again, what will be put on that virtual face mask can be literally anything and how the real actor looks is completely irrelevant. You can put an old woman on top of a young boy and it will look like an old woman (if done right).

I think the scenes with Mihawk look closer to feeling like a live action anime, Id like to see Corridor's opinions on either of his fights.
Now that I think about it... Does Eiichiro Oda tells (in the manga) the backstory of each one of the characters that we see in this first season of the live action series?
@@capellan2000 Yes he does, even more extensively than in the LA but he has expanded on their backstories for the past 2.5 decades so he had a lot of time to flesh it out.
@@capellan2000yes. We pretty much know at least a bit of backstory for every major character by now. Oda loves his flashbacks.
I feel the choice of not making the One Piece live action feel too much like anime is great, because that's exactly what doesn't work about anime live actions, when you act as an anime character in real life, it's just weird, uncanny, no one acts like that, like Eddy in the Cowboy Bebop live action

As an anime fan, One Piece is the first adaptation I truly appreciated. The actors selection played a large roll at that, an international selection making the characters more believable. The show doesn’t feel "we need to milk this franchise", they actually went out to make a show that is interesting non anime and One Piece fans.
On the Little Mermaid stuff, I always have major gripes with underwater cg cinematography. I work professionally in the underwater imaging industry and optics just work so differently than on land, so depth of field and water clarity are nearly always way less than directors understand. And that is just the beginning.

The "live action" versions of Disney films are like creating an uncanny valley almost. Animation/Anime works because you can depict things in a visual way that doesn't happen in real life, but you're not going "Wait a minute, that's not right!". But when you take that into a visual medium that's supposed to be "real", now we're going to criticize it OR it's going to feel off to us, because our minds are now going to expect things to look/act like they do in real life
Fair enough but alot of their crisim rolls into ugh you dared to even try this. Thinking back to how we were kids and just enjoyed doing creative stuff that challenged us, I don't get why we cant just try to make live action of cartoons. One piece was said to be impossible and all the people screamed how bad it was supposed to be...now people like it and nonfans got into it. Now they have a chance to see a condensed version with a few plot holes filled in as this is a second draft of the story. IMO people jump on the hate too fast and the net seems full of people that are that guy at a party screaming how they don't like anything...and that makes them special. Hint, it doesn't.
In my opinion there is no film that better captures the soul of anime cinematography and storytelling better than Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle from 2004. I’d love to see you guys react to that film, so many great scenes!
13:47 I'm actually so happy that One Piece Live Action decided not to try to mimic anime 1 to 1. It's the beauty of a medium change....anime O.P. gets the anime treatment, and live action O.P. gets the live action treatment. I would even go so far as to say that it SHOULDN'T feel like an anime when watching-- it would be a travesty (or at least really boring)!! What O.P. Live Action does so well is make it feel like you and me got devil fruit powers and now we're sailing the seas together! That's what Live Action's strength is -- you feel like Luffy could be your buddy in real life. If you focused on trying to match the intensity of anime, it's a losing game already. Plus, you'd lose the relatability -- which is Live Action's strength!!😁
As a person who isn't a big fan of most anime's art style including the original one peice but i absolutely love the one peice adaptation and am so happy they brought the story into another art form!
I really feel like Edgar Wright's "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" captured the anime vibe in live action with a ton of success.
Scott Pilgrim isn't anime, it's a graphic novel or comic.
But Netflix is making it into an animated series. Releases in November.

Comic book not anime
For me, Hayden's portrayal of Anakin in Ahsoka showed how good of an actor he is, especially in the face. His expressions help the audience track where he is in his story. Given a better writer and much better director, I think the prequels could have been amazing.
Not to mention he was the best lightsaber wielder in the series. Seems like he easily stepped back into that role
I think the political plot was quite solid in the prequels, but probably not what people wanted out of star wars.
The whole manipulating the republic by causing times of uncertainty and then giving rise to fascism wasn't too dissimilar to reality.
The score and choreography was also really solid.
Lucas just needed to be either the director or the writer, not both, and way less involved in editing.
@Corridor Crew - Im always happy to see a vfx artists react just due to the sheer music intro with the ticking and beats like a build up. and then i sit and watch the whole video with like that enjoyment. Keep that beat at the start for sure.

Personally a big fan of the live action OP not being very "anime".
I mean, if I wanted to watch anime OP I could just put on any of the 1000+ episodes that already exist of it. It's fun to see the same story from a slightly different perspective.
Kinda ignorant of Niko to call the anime the source material. It's a manga. The anime is the result of many different production teams and animators each making individual decisions and additions to "their" adaptation. It is not the "source" at all just a series of ways other people chose to adapt someone else's work. The live action should be free to make choices in those places.
You can argue that you like the choices the anime made better but it's ignorant to claim the anime itself should be the goal when again it is not the source material but an adaptation itself.

@@grass23 Frankly, your argument is dumb, because it hinges on the concept that the OG is the best version of something, when the Mission Impossible series, The Boys, and a bunch of other media demonstrates that the later installments or adaptations can be better than the original.
They could benefit from having some more dynamic camera angles, but yeah imagine if they just filmed a close up of someone's face lunging forward... it would look so cheesy
even if the show would've been 1-1 then it still wouldn't have been "anime"-like since it's a different medium (real people =/= animation)
you probably liked it since the characters/story/world/fights were westernized to fit people like you (the same cliches that we've seen over and over again here is the west)
I like to see your take on Huyang in Ahsoka. He looked like a practical puppet a lot of the time, but he had to be cgi in some scenes (just because of the way he was moving). But I often wasn’t sure which approach they were using for any given shot.

I feel like Fung Fu Hussle has some scenes that feel very anime inspired, I know its been talked about for stunts but its also a wonderful film for CGi and filmmaking. Thanks for another wonderful video!

as a scuba instructor with long hair I can attest. The hair goes everywhere. I routinely pulled it back or you learn to move your head certain ways as you move through the water to keep the hair going a certain way. I imagine one mastering the headmovement and transposing it to an air set would be difficult and look incredibly odd on top of a performance. I won't say its a large amount of head movement but it does require you to have a pretty good understanding and natural movement in a place most humans are not innately used to being.
Since you're Jesus, I understand the long hair, but why are you scuba diving and not just walking on water?
Buy how would having the hair realistic and the water mucky and the fish cartoony make it better??? People would just complain that they cant see anything, that the fish are fake looking, and the hair is stupid. Can't win.

I don't think the hair realistic would make it look better. I was simply pointing out and agreeing with them in the video. To make a film look good and match to reality are difficult. I don't think they could possibly film this movie and aim for realism and look good at the same time. There are plenty of places where the water isn't "mucky" but as they pointed out in the video they removed the realism from clear water (which anyone who has been underwater has seen) so we can notice and it looks odd.
As someone who has spent many many many days underwater in various environments I don't think the movie hit a good balance of realism or fantasy. It just looks odd. The water does not seem believable and the wildlife looks fake and odd. I feel like if they had hired one scuba dude they would have done much better.@@nichescenes

The "CHARGE " Blender short would be awesome
for the VFX series. As well as *Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia!* where you could do a comparison to the "live action" Lion King. Also at the end of second Chronicles of Narnia movie there's a big water creature, so it might be cool to see what you think about that.
Maybe also, Max Schneider's Gibberish music video, the editing kinda breaks my brain there.
The *last agni kai fight from ATLA* would be perfect for for the Animators React. It's so stunning!
And for stuntmen react It would be cool to see you react to the duel from "Potop", it's really good sword fight
I think they mentioned a while back they can't react to music videos because copyright strikes on music videos is very aggressive.
As for the ATLA fight, I think they reacted to it in one of the earliest Animators react episodes.

I was a featured extra on the Buggy scene showcased here. Most of the show was filmed in South Africa and you're right, the cinematography did not convey animé, but the show introduced the story of One Piece to an array of new fans on Netflix. A live action adaption of the show with live action styled cinematography is a great way to journey new audiences to the show. Season 2 can maybe go more wild with the style.
Agreed. People forget just how crazy everything will get once the reach the grand line. So there will definitely be more "anime scenes" in season 2 and later seasons. Luffys different movesets and fights later on will make it very hard for them to keep it grounded. Stuff like 2nd gear (if they make it there) will hopefully just be full send.
Exactly, didn't quite get the criticism in this scene, if they made it just like an anime it wouldn't have done as well as it did. It would just look goofy, anime doesn't translate well to live action.
how do you get to become an extra in a show like thar?
@@Atomicitalia I was an actor for a while in Cape Town and got to know the casting director well. They needed featured extras to respond to the bucky scenes and called me up.
@@lilIAN97huh Agreed. There were already a few strong cinematography decisions made to break away from conventional live-action styles, which ai think was a great decision to distinguish the show from other live-action series.
The Zod battle in Man of Steel is literally the most fight scene I've ever seen!!!🤣🤣🤣
For live action projects that really capture the spirit of anime, it has to be Scott Pilgrim and Speed Racer. They felt so different than traditional live-action adaptations of animated shows.

Kenshin has captured the anime''s essence really well imo.
kenshin as an anime was more rooted in reality though, thats why it translates so well
Yeah, all the kenshin movies are pretty good and I like all the performances but the costumes sometimes make them look like cosplayers, especially the wigs. They should have taken a more realistic route with the costumes since Kenshin is more about drama than anything else

I've always considered the Matrix to be a bit like a live-action anime, but you've already covered the Matrix movies so much already. Also I wasn't expecting you to be glowing about Ahsoka but those de-aging effects for Anakin are pretty dang good; I was expecting you to be slaughtering them over Ahsoka's terrible looking jump rolling in, I think, the second to last episode.
If I had to name one movie that has come close to evoking what makes anime great it’s the Cutie Honey film adaptation from around 2007 or so. Absolutely bonkers direction, great costumes and VFX that are never afraid to be over the top, and an obvious respect for the rules that anime established and an admirable attempt at bringing those to live action.
I swear the live action Little Mermaid is the perfect example of failed in concept. It just fights against its own visual concept.
I went down the rabbit hole of old Don Ameche movies last night, and I was blown away by "In Old Chicago" (1938), a movie about the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. I can't tell if this is miniature work or if they really built a fake city and torched it, but holy crap it looked good. If you guys ever do any more episodes about fire effects, I'd love to get some insight into how this was done.
There’s multiple scenes in the new Little Mermaid where the eyes are watery and have strong specular reflection underwater, like at 47 mins. They open the movie with a quote ”mermaid has no tears”😂
I guess if their tears are oil or air or other substance, they could show underwater🤔
The Little Mermaid is the first time I've seen something where they filmed on wires and the swimming looks legit. They clearly tracked the body movements even though they replaced it, but the choreography to get those body movements to look like legit swimming is really impressive stuff imo.
Also, the specularity underwater looks perfect to me. People underwater have essentially the same specularity that they do when they're dry above water, and those mermaids look exactly like that. The definitely don't look "wet".
For me I love the silent fight between snake eyes and storm shadows in Gi-Joe 2 it’s straight from the source material and did really well to honour the source material

My favorite anime style movies are all pretty old at this point.
Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle both give the over-the-top action that comedy shounen have.
And, the fight between Agent Smith and Neo in Matrix 3 is when I knew we could have a solid live actions Dragonball Z fight if only someone would make one.

I just watched the final race from speed racer. My mind is blown. It's still too early to say but I think it might be the best live action anime adaptation. No joking or sarcasm it was dynamic and action packed and captured the essence of animation. I felt the intensity of the race and the importance of the flashbacks and all the excitement of the crowd it's crazy how good it is! John goodman?! ANOTHER LIVE ACTION DAD ADAPTATION?! first daddy Flintstone now daddy racer?

In regards to the One Piece Live action. You need to remember that it's an adaptation of the manga and NOT the anime which is also an adaptation of the manga. Saying the Live action doesn't feel like the anime is like saying the under water shots in the Little Mermaid don't feel "wet" enough.
They're talking about shot selection though and most of the panels in the manga are used as keyframes in the anime.
Check the anime and the manga, you’ll see a lot of resemblance because they use panels of the manga to build the anime. Also, I don’t think it’s the adaptation of the manga either, the story was totally changed to tell the story as quickly as possible but we miss most of the fun stuff of the manga

Exactly, just wanted to write that, they cant make an adaptation of the anime, at least not without buying the rights from toei (right?) And that would be really expensive, but buying the manga right on the other hand is a lot more reasonable price, still expensive of course but more reasonable.
But also why would you want the exact same shot composition of the manga/anime. More the anime because those are both moving picture mediums. As an adaptation I would like to see diffeeent ways of doing it provided it’s still keeps to the spirit of the story. If it’s the same shots then what is the point of me watching this over the original

Love this channel and all of your context, super fun and educational! I think it'd be cool to see a reaction of the VFX in The Meg 2. It has some crazy underwater sequences and some Bollywood-type monster fights and action scenes in it too.

There's a Japanese live action anime adaptation called Casshern that does a good job with motion design. It's one of the early movies that was shot mostly on a green screen, at around the same time as films as Sky Captain (and the world of Tomorrow).
I could've sworn you guys talked about Hocus Pocus at some point but I can't find it anywhere. Would be awesome if you haven't covered it. Just watched it with my gf and 3 things popped out at me: 1 ALL the practical effects are amazing, the makeup, zombie effects, the everything. 2 the talking cat effects are surprisingly good even now, especially the scene where the cat jumps onto the spell book as it starts floating away, it's a 3 second shot but it's actually super impressive how smooth it looks. And 3 the opening credits have the camera flying over a 17th century village and it is either a real village they actually built or more likely some truly spectacular miniatures. So good I can't quite tell the difference lol. I'm sure it's minis but damn. Really it all looks so insanely good for a live action 90s Disney movie.
Considering that the live action One Piece is mostly made to draw people into the series that haven't watched the anime, I think the choice to make a One Piece TV show and not a live action anime was the right one. I would like to see some of that anime emotion in live action more often. It's why I enjoyed the Scott Pilgrim movie even though I wasn't all that invested in the actual characters or story.
Yeah their takes this video were real low effort IMO lol. Lots of comments on things they don't even engage with much and just parrot the usual oh live action isn't like anime so bad...also they react so weird when dude says you guys like anime right...like no in a weird way...like imagine if someone said you guys like television shows and I said ugh not in a weird way...they literally have videos on attack on titan...real weird ep.
The biggest thing about specularity under water in the little mermaid is the eyes. The specular highlights are still there because that's what makes eyes emotive, but in real life eyes under water no longer have those and look weird and kinda dead, which really wouldn't work in a film like this.
That insight into Little Mermaid is expert but well explained for a dummy layman like me, great stuff!
One of the most anime feeling movies ive ever watched is RRR, every action sequence in it has a perfect blend of goofy, cool, the kineticism that was talked about. One of my favourite movies definitely!

Its super interesting to me how the static elements, simplified/stylized drama shots, and long holds on impact shots of older anime are what a lot of people think of as “Anime”, when the animators in japan see those aspects of their animation as the worst part.
Exactly. These are just cost cutting methods for the animators and I'm disappointed at Corridor Crew for thinking that anime tropes are what makes anime.
Music takes arbitrarily frequencies and turns this into emotional ques. Animation takes arbitrarily motion and turns them into emotional ques. This is comprehension of art.

Hayden´s Performance is also really, really damn good in this. If you really look at how he moves and his body language, you can notice that he really did some great work there. At the beginning he moves around like Anakin, but later on he stops moving around in this more light footed way and goes full on Darth Vader, even without armor. The way he walks, swings his light saber and moves in general switches up to hoe Vader would, not Anakin.
Just watched the The Wolfman again for the first time in years (2010 - starring Benecio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, and Hugo Weaving). There's a final fight scene between two werewolves at the end of the movie that I think would be worth a VFX Artist reaction, for better or worse 🙂. There's also a scene earlier in that movie with a CGI bear at a gypsy camp, and generally the transformation scenes, that I think would be sources of critique entertainment.
Clearly Scott Pilgrim vs the world is one of the best manga to live action adaptation. Despite the differences between one and another, there's a lot mechanics put into the adaptation that not only make it look cool, but also it keeps the energy of an anime and/or video game.
And Speed Racer. Talk about kinetic!

The live action Alita Battle Angel movie was the best movie I seen that captured the essence of the animated version.
Speed Racer is probably the best anime->live action jumps made. The cinematography and the editing really make it work.

*The Matrix* is a movie that really captures the soul of anime, they even admitted that much themselves. For example the energy-sphere effect in the hallway is very similar to a scene from Akira

I only had an anime moment in a theater once. Alita Battleangel. Namely the part when she is torn to peaces and continues fighting with just torso and a hand. Also, the use of slow motion in that film really helped anime feal.

To me, the movies that catches what "real life anime" energy and effects are Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle and a little bit of CJ7, the effects are really nice for the time and some of them are made to be cartoonish on purpose, I wish there was more of these with Stephen Chow, his ideas are amazing

Netflix's live action version of One Piece is really good, but if compared to One Piece the anime version, it still has many shortcomings, but even so, the movie can still be said to be very good and much better than previous live action disasters

I mostly liked it, but I wish the storylines hadn't been so compressed. Some of the big dramatic moments didn't land as well as they could, because they didn't get enough buildup - like Sanji's decision to leave Baratie, or Nami's screaming breakdown after getting screwed over by Arlong. That's my one big complaint. Everything else was a lot of fun.
