I love reverse P pickups and am really glad that they did it on this. String through body is also a nice touch. I'd really like to play one of these basses.
I think this is my most favourite bass I've heard on this channel so far. Sounds so good, fat and clear at the same time with just the right amount of treble
Another great video Lobster. The bass sounds fantastic, and I love the way the two pickups balance as far as output goes. In some P/J configurations, the J pickup can sound anemic. I agree with you that the shape has a kind of a love it or leave it style. But that aside, all the other points you covered are home runs in my book. Besides, with Hipshot licensed tuners - you could get their USA made detuner for the E string and get that low D when you need it. Cheers!

Thanks Mr. Lobster, great review as always. This appears to be the exact same wood, hardware and electronics as my Mercalli 5, except the Mercalli pickups are big soapbars. The neck pickup is a split configuration "P" built within the big soapbar. It, too, is excellent craftsmanship and the length of the horn gives it excellent balance with the strap attached. Something Ibanez could have easily done with the Tallman TM505 (but they didn't).

The other bass, the white one, it is basically a bass version of their Warhawk, which is a great guitar, too. I'd say it belongs in the musical wheelhouse. I honestly don't care much for basses with the all-too-familiar "P/J" configuration (feels more like a J-bass suffering from an identity crisis to me 😅), but the one featured on that Reverend nearly made my eyes lit up! First off, that "P-bass" neck pickup is in a reversed position which I do like VERY much after being thoroughly spoiled by the FGN Mighty Power on one of your previous uploads not too long ago. Second, position of that "J-bass" bridge pickup immediately caught my attention as it's a lot closer to the "P-bass" one than it is to the bridge. Definitely improved the overall tone of that bass and, in some aspects, might've even justified having it on there for once (can't really say the same for most other "P/J" basses out there, unfortunately). Lastly, the type of pickups used is definitely high quality. Love how dead-quiet they are as well as how aesthetically pleasing they are in relation to the rest of the bass. Body design is not for everyone (lol), but it's quickly grown on me. Matter of fact, if Reverend has any of these as a LH option I'll gladly give one a long hard look 😉!
I love this bass but yours looks so cool with the reverse headstock. Reverend should make the reverse headstock standard on all there models. I would buy this bass but I already have too many.
Thanks Billy! I agree, I think the styling of the Me'shell was perfect, this one seems to go down a more traditional route which doesn't have as much of a 'cool factor'

This actually looks classy to me, unlike those basses, which look like they should be played by cheesy hair metal bands.
It's killed me that for years reviewers have always referred to Reverends products as "bargain" end. Given the build quality they have always had and the bespoke pickups of the highest caliber (not to mention Wilkinson bridges & quality locking tuners) they could easily charge 2 - 3 × what they do. And if they had, they'd probably get the respect they deserve. It just goes to show that "bargain" prices don't always = "bargain" goods. I'd buy Reverend before Gibson (especially Gibson) or Fender *every* time.

Amazing review Lobster! I've been eyeing the seafoam green one for a few weeks. Might have to pull the trigger. What's the neck profile feel like? Does it lean more jazz bass or p bass?
Apart from the construction differences, the P is reversed vs standard layout on your own, plus it looks to be closer to the neck? This would make a difference? I like the J solo’d and that looks further north than the 60’s position, not to mention 70’s position? Looks a great bass, how would it compare to a Yamaha which I think offer similar spec?
Thanks Adrian! I should have mentioned the reverse P. They seemed to be in roughly the same spot. That's a great question regarding the Yamaha. I think the 434 would be a solid option and does come in a lot cheaper, but the high quality materials here are superior to that of the Yamaha. The neck on this thing is SUPER nice, and Reverend PLEKs their necks which definitely helps getting them honed well. I don't know if Yamaha does PLEK in house or not.
I just bought a Swing PJ bass from South Korea. Stumbled upon it listed on eBay. Quality craftsmanship and great value. Kinda like how KIAs are now luxury cars.
If you had an active/passive control in there. I don't think you could ask for anything more. I wonder if they make such an animal? I think the fader innovation with a passive bass is something you don't see much. That's very cool. If I had to make a Decision. I'd buy that bass in second. What is that Ibanez SR model with the dragoneye burst finish and reverse P setup?
Thanks Rick! I think Rev only does passive, but a preamp would be a neat addition here. I know of the soundgear you're talking about, however I think that one uses the same electronics as the Talman TMB50X/60X which I found to be kinda... meh.
Thanks Luis! Yes! We're definitely looking to try out a Mercalli. Been coordinating with Reverend and we should hopefully have another instrument to look at in the next month or two :)
I have the older Decision with the block neck pickup. It's a great bass and you can really tell a lot of thought has gone into all of the Reverend basses. Customer service is also great. Ken Haas the CEO has personally answered a couple of my email questions.
Thanks Chris! Yeah I dig the more angular styling of the meshell/thundergun/fatfish with the raised center section a bit more, but everything else about this bass is definitely killer
Yeaah !!! The cat !!!!!! Funny cat!!!! Big cat !!!! Love cat and basses!!! Pickup s perfects great tones ,Also in serial\parall mode? Separate qnd both? Are dimarzio?!!! Peace and sucess lobster !!!!cheers from Brasil for you and your cat !!!!!
Thank you! :) Not sure how the individual pickups are wired, I suspect parallel. These are in house Reverend pickups from what I understand, similar to those DiMarzios :)
As soon as you mentioned that tailpiece, I was out. Multiple users report the strings digging into the wood on the face of the guitar at the string-thru exits, and chipping the finish. It's a real poor design and I don't know why FGN and Reverend use it.
There are many more Reverends to try! I'm glad I (well one of the LEL crew) made the connection with Ken at Reverend. We'll definitely feature more in the near future :)
Great question! Probably the styling honestly. The pickups also sound great but are definitely geared towards more aggressive tones which may not suit all genres, but it still is flexible and am awesome instrument. Honestly, it's nit picks that separate a 4 claw bass from a 5.
@@danplaysbass6294 Probably with some flats... Keep in mind you're talking to the dude who had a Ric 4003 in high school jazz band with rotosounds (if I could turn back time ahaha). My walking lines were CLANK CLANK CLANK hahaha

Got any other suggestions for a quality pj bass under $1000? (preferably passive but idc much)
Hey Bryce! I can't think of a PJ that checks all the boxes like this bass. I think the 4 string Yamaha BB 434 might be a solid PJ option that's a bit more budget friendly, but you have the single coil bridge pickup vs the humcancelling one of the Rev. Honestly, you really get your moneys worth with the Reverend. Great hardware, materials, electronics, and build quality. Very solid well rounded bass here that still has some teeth tonally
I really appreciate the location of the bridge pickup. It’s almost in stingray territory and isn’t as pointy sounding as a normal jazz.

I just bought a Swing PJ bass from South Korea. Stumbled upon it listed on eBay. Quality craftsmanship and great value. Kinda like how KIAs are now luxury cars.
Thanks Alex! I would loooooooooove to get a Moollon! Definitely have my eye on the Swing stuff too. I used to have a Y-man 5 string J for a while.
True
these reverend basses look very cool
Thanks Ricardo!
That neck is wicked!😘
But, the headstock doesn't seem like it's congruent with the rest of the bass.🤔
Block inlays would have been a nice touch as well!👌🏿
Thanks Jason! Ah yeah, blocks would have been a nice touch for sure! I do like my Me'shell a lot better stylistically.
that is a very very nice instrument!!!
Thank you!
My friend really did die of cancer this week.
Thanks for the help
My condolences for the loss of your friend. I'm glad this video helped :).
@@LowEndLobster it didn’t.
@@sueblue8818 Ok. Well sorry to hear about your friend and I hope you feel better!
Hey Sue. How are you doing? Hope you are feeling a little better.
Sounds really good, looks sort of cool ...but may need to stare at it a bit longer to make my mind up.
Thanks Liegh :)
I know of the soundgear you're talking about, however I think that one uses the same electronics as the Talman TMB50X/60X which I found to be kinda... meh.
@@LowEndLobster yeah. That preamp would be meh. I would think that it is time to upgrade that preamp
Correction: Reverend does not use Plek machines, but has a team of guitar techs that set up each instrument before they ship out to dealers.
Thank you for the correction!
Reverend....LOBSTER!!! DON'T GIVE ME IDEAS!!
Hehehehe, you know the idea is already there ;P.
@@LowEndLobster I got LowEndLobsterceptioned!
Soooo....for less than a grand, this or a Music Man (for versatility, buying one for studio only)?
Hi Lobster. Could you try and make a review on the Reverend Mercalli 4 string. I benn thinking about getting one.
Thanks Luis! Yes! We're definitely looking to try out a Mercalli. Been coordinating with Reverend and we should hopefully have another instrument to look at in the next month or two :)
Great bass. However The tuners look too big for the head stock. Otherwise a great bass
Thanks Rich!
I have the older Decision with the block neck pickup. It's a great bass and you can really tell a lot of thought has gone into all of the Reverend basses.
Customer service is also great. Ken Haas the CEO has personally answered a couple of my email questions.
Thanks David! I agree, they're an excellent company
Great tone and construction. Not sure about the body shape lol
Thanks Chris! Yeah I dig the more angular styling of the meshell/thundergun/fatfish with the raised center section a bit more, but everything else about this bass is definitely killer
@@LowEndLobster the tone is amazing for sure
@@LowEndLobster tkx !!! Peace Man !
I like so much this tones!! Great Bass
I have PJ squier !love PB and PJ !
As soon as you mentioned that tailpiece, I was out. Multiple users report the strings digging into the wood on the face of the guitar at the string-thru exits, and chipping the finish. It's a real poor design and I don't know why FGN and Reverend use it.
You should get that bsss!!!
There are many more Reverends to try! I'm glad I (well one of the LEL crew) made the connection with Ken at Reverend. We'll definitely feature more in the near future :)
This bass sounds really good. Is it slightly overdriven? I briefly owned a Reverend Triad Bass that I really liked.
Thanks Sam! That's an interesting observation. The tone does have a very gritty sound to it
Hey Lobster.
Which neck feels better?
The FGN's or this one?
They both feel excellent, but the FGN necks are literally other wordly. Mighty Jazz and Mighty Power (harder to get in USA) are my favorites.
You get a like for Donny.
Thanks Blech :)
There’s only one Reverend around here! 😡
Great sounding bass, still out of my price range though.
XD Thanks Rev!
I’ve said it before... dat 😺😆
Solid bass too 👍
Heheh thanks Ozzie!
The new one has reverse p
Indeed! Thanks Bob! I should have mentioned that
Donny Benet YES!
You never mentioned that the P pickup is REVERSED! That’s a critical distinction.
Indeed! My bad
Lobster, from your comments I thought you may give it 5 claws. What keeps it from that?
Great question! Probably the styling honestly. The pickups also sound great but are definitely geared towards more aggressive tones which may not suit all genres, but it still is flexible and am awesome instrument. Honestly, it's nit picks that separate a 4 claw bass from a 5.
@@LowEndLobster So would this bass work for jazz standards for example?
@@danplaysbass6294 Probably with some flats... Keep in mind you're talking to the dude who had a Ric 4003 in high school jazz band with rotosounds (if I could turn back time ahaha). My walking lines were CLANK CLANK CLANK hahaha
@@danplaysbass6294 I would think maybe one of their hollow bodies or something with one of their humbuckers might be more appropriate. My new Brad Houser Fatfish 32 could definitely pull it off even with routs, just has a much 'fatter' tone. But again, that bass also has its tonal limitations (but is still effin' awesome).
@@LowEndLobster Ok I will say one more thing as you are younger than me. Please remember that flat wounds were all they had back in the day, that does not make them better. I never really understand why people go on about them... ok take care.
Been looking at pj bass options for a while and although I am obsessed with this Reverend it is a little out of my price range new and there are very few used ones I can find/I am not getting responses on my offers.
Thanks for the quick response. Put in an offer for a used one today. Fingers crossed they accept!
