    Hey everyone! Today we are reviewing the Reverend Triad, one of the coolest models to come out of Reverend's shop! Featuring not one... not two... but THREE Jazz Bomb rail style pickups, this tonal titan is here to flex. But with all triple pickup basses, we have to ask the question - how well does it utilize the three pickups? Let's find out!
    This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

    I love how Mexican Fenders have become the standard for comparing value amongst instruments on this channel. Many of your reviews follow this standard. "For Mexican Fender prices...." And I agree, Mex Fenders are the most run of the mill, semi decent, ubiquitous instruments out there, so it is a good comparison. I'm glad you are showing the world what awesome instruments are out there beyond Fender.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  2 роки тому +16

      Thank you! I think that comparison is more important now than it's ever been considering how much the MIM prices have gone up almost an entire 'tier'. 5-800 USD Fenders are now 9-1400 USD. Great comment!

      @@LowEndLobster I am probably not adjusting for inflation enough, but I feel that MIM instruments are too overpriced now to the point that I personally would go with a Squier and mod it, which I would do to a MIM anyway, making it most definitely overpriced in my mind. I have two US Fenders that I wouldn't touch other than cosmetically and those are just a touch more than a modded MIM.

    A simple wiring mod via a push/pull pot to keep the neck pickup permanently on would make your wishes come true. With the switch engaged, bridge pickup selection will include neck giving the jazz option. Selecting bridge plus middle gives you all three at once.
    Sorted 😊

      Ones I like the most :
      Neck half tone (also sounds remarkably good with tone off!),
      Neck&Mid half tone
      Mid full tone !!! whether with fingers, pick , or slap, this thing ROCKS !!!
      Mid&Bridge full tone would sound great with a pick ! half tone with fingers
      Bridge half tone (also sounds pretty good with tone off!)

      I put some Dunlop flats on a reverend decision P (their PJ), and can confirm that it sounds amazing. The Reverend pickups have more high-end than your standard Fender, but the high quality electronics let you adjust that without hurting your tone. Their pots are 500k instead of 250k, so half way back on the tone knob is about perfect for that fender vibe

    Great sounds coming out of that baby. Random thought popped into my head as I watched you play: that bass would look very cool with a reversed headstock. I know Reverend has made some models like that in the past. They should consider it here. Gee... I really wasn't wanting to have to consider buying another bass right now. See what you've done?
    Also, I've modded Strats in the past to get those other pickup combinations with just one extra switch. That would be a great mod here.

    I like this bass a lot, one of the rare really original designs in the mainstream, lots of character and style. I think that its look, sound and concept go really well together. It has some Gibson G3 vibes with its symmetrical 3-pickup config, and while it sounds very different from the G3, it will play very nicely in a similar setting. If I had one, I'd do the mod you mentioned for sure: Just a push-pull pot to add the bridge pickup in all settings.

    Really cool bass Lobster. That middle pickup is "Ric-esque". One of the cool things in position 3 with 50% tone. It seems that an "Octaver" with that, might sound pretty cool. One mod suggestion. Wire in the neck pickup into position 5 maybe to get that "jazzy" tone. Or put in a 6 position switch to create that option. I love the blade pickups. They're so gnarly sounding. Keep rockin it bro✌️😎👍🎸❤️🤟

    Nice review and a great sounding/looking bass. I don't know why more companies don't offer 3 PUP basses. The only ones that immediately come to mind are the old Gibson G3 (which was even more limited in pickup choices than this bass), the Godin Shifter, the Burns Bison, and the Spear Flextool (You should get your hands on one of those for a review. Interesting combo of pickups). Regarding the pickup options on this bass, could you simply install a 7-way Strat pickup selector? I also wish the control plate/controls on this was a bit lower. I can see how close your hand is coming to hitting the knobs when you're picking. And maybe a humbucker/single coil option too?

    I'd love to hear what would happen if you'd add a Free-Way 10-position switch, like others already suggested! With the stock pickups, this might become a little bit too hot, since the pickups seem to be pretty hot already, and the switch would add several serial combinations. So more vintage-voiced pickups might be worth it. I think the DiMarzio Area J or Sixties J would fit the bill, and they would look killer on this bass!

      L 2000 1980 that I’ve had since I bought it in 81 and a 2009 2500 both have issues with the active electronics buzzing really bad. I replace the electronics in the old one with EMG passives. Still a great sound it’s in the wood.
      When I’m able, I’m gonna replace the electronics in the 2500 and the neck. It was warped when I bought it. I got a great deal on it at guitar center for 500 bucks but I never could get the next straight enough. I spoke to G and L tailor. I generally miss the not quite 50/50 pickup combinations when a bass has a pickup selector rather than a blend (or multiple volume controls). This one seems fine as-is (although I'd put a push/pull pot in the tone slot to be able to use all three or neck and bridge pickups together).

  • @attichatchsound-bobkowal5328

    Strats have those 5 way choices because the middle pickup is reverse wound, which makes positions 2 and 4 hum cancelling. This bass's PUs are dual coil, so that wouldn't be a consideration. Maybe the middle position sounds a lot like the neck/ bridge combo.

    Great bass, and love the idea, but from the five possible pickup combinations, I'd only find three of them useful. i.e. neck, middle and bridge. The tones provided by the neck & middle (in particular) and the middle & bridge combinations are too nasal for my liking (due to proximity of the pickups). Agree with Lobster: A neck & bridge combination would result in a great scooped sound ala jazz bass, but I'm not so sure all three pickups in combination would sound all that good. Nice idea on paper, but in reality, it might just result in a doubling-down of the 'nasal' tone I'm hearing when neck & middle, or middle & bridge are run together, especially since all three pickups would be running simultaneously. I predict the tone in this scenario would be nasal in the extreme, probably verging on 'mud'

  • @kirtfulcher6288

    I wonder if you "chain" blend knobs off these three pickups... So have Blend1 control the Neck and Mid, then have Blend2 mix Blend1 with the bridge pickup. This way you could blend all three together in any configuration you want... or would there be load issues since you would be potentially blending Neck + Middle vs Bridge? Hmmmm

      TBH the Sire headstock has grown on me with the roasted maple models. I think I'm just so used to the Reverend design as being their staple, even on the 'last gen' models from the mid-2000's (Rumblefish I believe). I think Reverend's design language is very cohesive overall. The body and headstock shapes work well together. IMO Sire's seems a bit more out of place because our brains see a Jazz and expect to see a Fender-ish headstock.

    I think this bass - and other Reverends - are so very cool, but I can't use them onstage: exposed poles/blades create harsh spikes when my very down-tuned strings hit them; I have a very heavy plucking hand, and after 30+yrs of playing I can't really help it. (If the poles/blades are made flush with the housing, I can use them, but my main instruments have covered Barts... Reverend: please make a flush-blade pup? ...... oh also - make a FRETLESS!!!)

    I’m torn on this one…it sounds amazing, the finish is gorgeous, heard nothing but good things about it. Only thing is in some photos, this bass looks kind of bulky and wide, and then in other pics it looks super sleek and slim (which is what I prefer). What do you think, lobster? How’s it look in-person?

      The shape is really comfy and not big and wide. I'd say it's similar to an EBMM Sterling in terms of size

      @@LowEndLobster that’s music to my ears as the EBMM sterling is my favorite bass that EBMM makes, considering I own 4 of them lol. Thank you for your reply and for what you do!

      @@LowEndLobster well, that does it. Lobster you single-handedly convinced me to buy one of these and it is the NICEST passive bass I own and probably the nicest I’ve ever played. This thing absolutely slays 90% of the AMERICAN fenders I’ve played. It almost seems unreal.

    Mod project to get the J and all pickup configuration????

    • @12cmf
      @12cmf 2 роки тому +1

      Super simple mod. One can use an SPST switch to put the neck and bridge pickups in parallel.

    Nice! Everybody should have a reverend bass in their arsenal. There was a little bit of humming or noise throughout the whole recording maybe it wasn’t the bass.

    Man I bet if you could use all three pickups at once you would get a close Gibson G3 Grabber tone 🤤

    • @martinheath5947
      @martinheath5947 2 роки тому +1

      The G3 pickups are wired in series with the middle pickup always on. The middle is reverse wound reverse magnetic pole pieces making this comfiguration a genuinely humbucking design.

    Here in Australia the price difference with Mexican Fenders is 2 1/2 times that of the USA so not that great a deal.

    You could have a Gibson G3 tone from that unit, wouldn't be hard at all to pull off.

    To be honest I wouldn’t buy one. Too many other options on the market at this price point. But cool bass nonetheless. Not sure why they didn’t implement the triple pickup option given there are three there.

    that thing has some serious noise issues. fading in music to hide that during the dead spots in your vid only serves to confirm and highlight that fact. hard cringe. state it like it is or lose all credibility or usefulness as a players resource.
