Just to add.. Kefyras is made with milk.
Most people that drink it daily (as it’s very good for digestion and has other health benefits), they make it at home.
You only need 2 ingredients: milk and kefir grains.
You take the grains (you can get some dry ones online or if you know anyone who does kefir you could ask them for a few of theirs! And you only need a few as they multiply as time passes!).
And the full translation is fermented milk, so yes if you boil it, it will look (and taste!) spoiled! 🤣
Also.. Lašinėliai or Lašiniai is basically smoked bacon, but instead of being sliced in the British/American way they are found in small blocks (think 8 thick slices together without being cut), they are smoked (so safe to eat) and people buy them and slice them in strips like in the video.
    Great video girls!

Most people never heard of the country lithuania. But since geography is one of my fave subjects back in grade school, I know that country exists. Maybe it's not that internationally known but it's one of the peaceful nation I think

Lithuania is known for basketball too. In PHL, raw meat (pork, beef, fish) is called "Kilawen or Kinilaw". But if the meat is preserved then it is called Etag, a delicacy famous in Sagada. 😊👍❤

I have had beets only a few times. I've had borscht before. The pink soup looks like something we take here when our tummies are not well in the US. Kefir is like a yogurt drink. We have it here in the US but many times we can buy flavored such as blueberry or strawberry. Yum

While cold soups where common in the old days, the current cold soup variation came and were popularised only during the Soviet era, when people went to eat during lunch in canteens, where all they could choose were cold soup, cepelinai, cutlet. It was cheap, easy and good for hot day. This cold soup is found in many countries in the East (Ukraine, Belarus, Poland). Basically, the only real traditional food still consumed by masses is the poppy milk during Christmas. We are probably the only country that makes it in the world. Polish took it as they loved it too. Another traditional food is boiled potatoes with sour milk. There is a traditional food restaurant in Lithuania that tries to recreate traditional food dishes together with historians, but most tourists probably doesn't know about it (not even many lithuanians knows about it. And to be fair, I also forgot its name).
"Lašiniai" is smoked and salted meat. In Dzukija, differently than in other regions, they also dry and cure meats. In most other regions people traditionally cold or hot smoked meats. Furthermore, there are some other variations in regional cuisine due to the geographical and fertility variations in the land.
I love that these kind of videos give insight to the culture of a country, but please, don't be americans. Do the research before saying something, don't be scared to say "I don't know exactly, so will not try to guess and be wrong". This answer does more good.
    Stay safe.

Hi you two! Lithuania looks so nice judging from your opening shots. Your Saltibarsciai looks very appealing from your description. I haven't tasted it but I know I'll like it. I like red beets too. In the Philippines and America, I think the Kefyr is probably known as sour cream(?). Also nice to meet your friend Elge. Anyway, great video! We're all ready to see Lithuania! 👋😊

    • @izabelezyleify
      @izabelezyleify 5 років тому

it's not known as sour cream, it is very specific to Eastern Europe, and it's called kefir elsewhere. Just look in any major city(London, Paris, Rome, even in small towns like Verona they sell it)

It looks like you didn't add dill, salt and pepper into Šaltibarščiai. It's a must. Or maybe you just forgot to film it. I also add some cream or milk (but you can add water too) so it isn't that thick. Kefyras in English is actually kefir. In England you can buy it in Russian/Polish/Lithuanian food stores.

Šaltibarščiai is related to Borscht? My Russian ex used to make one for me in Kuala Lumpur, but it's clear and runny (still purple). She serve sour cream on the side though, if you like sour creme. She said it's actually a Ukrainian dish, but Russians has made it theirs.

indeed this soup origins might be from Ukraine/Russia and yes it is indeed Borscht soup but it is made as a cold soup, Borscht is boiled soup.

My father was from Lithuania. That's not how he pronounced saltibarsciai at all. I didn't know what she was saying until I saw how she spelled it. If she's not adding an English accent to the pronunciation then her parents must speak a different dialect than my father spoke.

Hey John! Thanks for your comment! I am not too sure who you referring to when you say "she". Justina (the blond girl) is Lithuanian so she is pronouncing Šaltibarščiai correctly. Micha (the girl with the curly hair) is English so when she says the name of this dish, she is saying it with an accent.

Well, I was commenting about Justina. I'm guessing it must be a difference in dialect? Or, maybe just a failing memory since my father died 30+ years ago. He was from a small village east of Vilnius kind of close to the Russian border. Unfortunately, I don't speak any Lithuanian since my father said we live in America and we didn't need to speak Lithuanian. He never taught me or my sister, but would tell us names of foods, etc. He liked to add the boiled potatoes and chopped dill leaves to the Šaltiborščiai. Thank you for making videos of Lithuanian food! It brings back fond memories!
