Hi Kerry I hope you’re well I’m watching in fear from the UK I’m just so happy to know that there is another UA-camr who also has LCA which is the same condition of mine I am I’m so happy and I do get your point about when doctors tell you that your eyesight is stable but then when you experience something they just think white is just part of it when it can be traumatising and I have experience that recently
I'm so sorry to hear that! That's terrible. I feel like there is so many communication problems between patients and doctors. It's awesome to have you here and thanks for being part of the live accessible community. :-) my cousin grew up in the UK. Love all the UK people on here. 💙
How do you learn to retain information audibly. I can’t seem to remember what I hear when things are being read to me. I remember better when I read but it takes too long any tips on how to transition from reading to screen reader?
This is where Braille really comes in handy. It engages a different part of your brain. But that does take a lot of training and time to get good enough to read quickly. You can also take notes while people read and that is really helpful. Take as many notes as possible because it engages on other part of your brain to help you remember things. And with taking notes, you also have something to refer back to. It also helps to record when people do read for you. I hope that helps!
Hi Kerry is a point I wanted to add on about this lifestream of yours about learning bro I feel like now a lot of us are trying to tell the younger generation that learning Braille is just so important because it really relies on screen readers and technology and they don’t understand the concept of actual reading or writing and a screen reader is not useful for something like maths
Sure! My social media is in the description of every video. Or you can just search for live accessible on facebook , twitter, and instagram. And you can calso send me an email: carrie@liveaccessible.com.
My husband has a cognitive disability and thing that helps the blind helps him a lot, all the audio assistances because he can’t read or spell well due to his disability
I can relate but I could not hide my vision. I have optic atrophy and secondary nystagmus. I have useful sight and with a lot of struggle I managed to get my Masters. I have been visually impaired all my life. I feel so self conscious. I went to a high school for visually impaired. Students.
Oh yes I went to camps for the blind. Here in Florida it’s called a little lions camp. And I loved it from age 7 to 18. But for me seeing print when I was little no I never could see print when I was little. Because I went blind at six months old. So from K through ninth grade my mom read my homework to me and she would write it. Then I went to the Florida school for the deaf and blind. From the age 16 to 18. That would be 10th grade through 12th grade. They had large print. But I still could not see it. So the first year I was there was my 10th grade year. My mom asked him if I can come home every weekend so she can help me get catch up on my homework through the week and he said yes. Because she had to read my homework to me and write it for me. Then the following year my 11th grade year they started sending everybody home every weekend and it helped because he still continued to read my homework to me and write my homework for me. And that’s how I was able to graduate high school. My mom yes wanted me to learn braille. But my dad said ever teach my daughter braille I would destroy all of y’all braille books and anything else they had to do with Briel. So the school was totally scared of my father he didn’t teach me. And continue to let my mom read and write my homework for me. They said we would need her to write a little bit to show them that I know how to write so my mom said no problem but it was totally hard but I was still able to graduate thanks to my mom. But I did not learn br until I was 18 years old and that’s where I learned um contracted braille but I know a few words in contracted braille.
I'm not sure weather I have the confidence to start my own channel. it as crossed my mind from time to time but I wouldn't know what to talk about plus I only have my mobile phone to use the Internet with. its funny when I use face time people wounder why They can only see my nose in truth I can't see their faces to well. and yet I can a bit more outside I can see better in natural light. and I like clear contrast some street designers like to have steps the same colour as the flat ground and in perfect line so you find the ground disappears from under you. I have a retired Guide dog. but I have had Caine training so I use that if I go out. dogs are good company but mine wasn't very well trained and was hard work he would be in peoples bags and taking food off the lower counters in supermarkets. so Ironically you needed good eyes to watch him. it was like having a toddler not that I have kids. but I love him but I'm going to stay with my Caine. people would come up to me and just stroked the dog and ignore me when I told them he is working it was the elderly who where the biggest problem. once he tried to pull me across a busy road because he thought he sore my dad. and it was quite a regular acurance people would click him so they could have a cuddle with him. once we went to this castle and someone tried to call him then when I was coming down some stone steps. but I managed to keep my balance. total strangers would come up and ask me what my eye sight was like. I'm one of them people who just wants a quite life. I live in a small community where everyone knows everyone else. so after Herby goes to the pearly gates I'm using my Caine I can get around faster and without a fuss. sorry for taking up so much of your time I enjoy your Channel keep up the good work
