2023 is my no buy year. It was getting out of hand in 2022. Now I need to tackle my credit cards and after that get my mortgage down. But… I have no regrets. My perfume collection makes me SO happy, but now I need to restrain myself.
You make such an important point about how fragrance can make us feel a certain way, but it doesn’t truly make that feeling a reality. So much of the advertising behind consumer goods is the promise that we’ll BECOME the thing because others will perceive us as the thing. But the reality is that the two don’t equate, and it doesn’t address the fact that we know better. Having done the all-white linen outfit at a posh bar thing, I can say that while I enjoyed the self-conscious perception that I possibly appeared glamorous to others, the reality of my experience is that I knew it was a fantasy. While we enjoy the fantastical, emotional power fragrance has on us, it’s important not to get lost in the fantasy such that we negatively impact our reality by overspending or neglecting areas of our real life! Everything in moderation. A life without dreams is a nightmare, but a never-ending fantasy is madness.
I love your closing comment! So true! It’s fun to dream and fantasize but I need to keep the reality of my “actual” life in view as well. Thanks so much for sharing ❤️❤️
A refreshing and positive continuation of Part 1, with an honest and healthy dose of pragmatism. The imposter syndrome fueled by FOMO is so real! This resonated with me on so many levels, the belief that somehow the perceived treasure will miraculously transform myblife. The Minimalists have a guide to helping curb excessive consumption, the 30/30 rule, whereby anything over $30 requires you to pause for 30 min. This, of course, is near impossible for perfumes which all surpass that threshold but the numbers are arbitrary. I set a 10% rule ($175, leave in basket for 17 days for research). More often than not upon follow-up, I'm either indifferent to buying or finding it no longer available. Those were my 'aha' moments and the 'breakthrough' was cathartic during my no/low-buy year. All the best for 2023!
Thank you for inspiring me to spend and consume less this year! I made a big effort to use up candles, as well as makeup and face/body products before buying more. I found a lot of joy in finishing products and often discovered that I didn’t need a replacement. It made me realize how often I would buy an item and never finish it because I found something new and exciting. Regarding perfume, I realized that I like the joy of discovery more than owning a full bottle so I focused more on samples. Next year, I am making a big effort to stay within my monthly budget. I don’t think I would have practiced as much restraint as I did this year without your example. Thank you & happy new year🎉
I’m on a no buy as well. It’s been fun discovering perfumes in my collection I barely wore. My criteria for buying has definitely changed - no blind buying! I also started an account that I fund bi-weekly.

In the past few months I have lost my mind purchasing so many, a lot of them I am not crazy about but was influenced to buy them. I am now trying to pull back, only getting samples and taking my time before buying. At my age I can never possibly use all of them. My thought has been that the ONE is going to come to me, after listening to you I now realize there is no perfume out there that is going to be all things to me.

Absolutely lovely. You were my main inspiration for my own no buy, which started on Halloween and I said is gonna be 6 months, until the 1st of May. But, on the side of that, my travels and some news about people I care about totally changed my perspective on perfume. I mean, is not that important, and nobody cares. Let's be honest, compared to other hobbies, like , let's say, clothing, jewelry, cars, handbags, house decor, gardening, sports, etc, perfume has the smallest social footprint. We give it way more importance than 99.9 percent of the people around us. The ultra vast majority of people in the society assign 10 min a year to think and feel about perfume. Yes, they are important for me, I love the olfactive memories, but there are way more important things. Even considering those " swanky bars" that you mention, in swanky resorts, swanky destinations, swanky places, there are at least 5-6 more important and visible layers on you, as person, to define who you are, until you get to the perfume layer. But that aside, you are incredibly smart, honest, charismatic, and you talk SENSE. Because of you , Pep, Raffi and Dmitry from Perth I am starting to see Australia and Australians in a very very positive light and cooking the plan for a visit.
Thanks for the year of no-buy inspiration, Cherie! I’m a quiet follower, but I’ve been enjoying for perfume content for awhile. I was even inspired to start an excel after I saw your Air Table video to help me cull my collection (I love data too 😉). I’ve been wanting to do a no-buy for years, but I’ve always made excuses. But following your no-buy has been great and it helped me to get myself mentally (and emotionally!) prepared for this year. But I’m excited! Totally agree that spending money isn’t self care. I have to thank you for introducing me to one of favorite fragrances of all time this year: Ormonde Jayne Woman. Even just a year of life without her would have been a little dimmer.! I will only be buying fragrances only 1 time this year - and that will be during my long postponed European honeymoon (Paris included 🎉). Congratulations on your no-buy completion! I’m fairly new to perfume but I’ve already made a few rules. I’m not trying perfume that only comes in 100ml bottles because I don’t want bottles that large in my collection (yes I could buy decants but I also enjoy the artistry in bottle design). I’d rather have many small bottles as I love variety, than have big bottles I’ll never get through (and don’t have the patience to sell decants). I also am not trying super expensive perfumes when there are so many amazing artistic perfumes at more reasonable prices. Also trying to avoid perfumes that are really hard to obtain or discontinued as the scarcity can create the panic and urgency to purchase.
This is awesome and yes just not trying things you know you don’t want to spend the money on is a great mechanism. I agree re: decants and the artistry of bottles, my decants often get ignored because they all look the same and I can’t tell what I have! Luckily a lot of brands are catch on to doing smaller format bottles. Thanks for sharing! 🤗
Your phone might be running hot because you need to clear out the cache. Open settings, scroll down to Safari, and then scroll down to Advanced go to the bottom and hit remove all website data. This should help your phone run faster and hopefully stop it from heating up. Hope this helps.

Hello Cherie, I had to replace my iPhone battery to stop my phone from doing the same shut off. It saved a ton of money just because it fixed the issue and I didn't end up replacing my phone as it fixed the issue. I couldn't justify the cost just to get an improved camera function on my phone. - Jenn
Haha thanks Jenn. I think mine’s issue is less to do with battery and more to do with the fact that I accidentally knocked it off our balcony railing a few months ago 🙈 I’ve already attempted to have it repaired but it has never been the same lol

Hi Cherish. I hope I am spelling your name right. I agree with you. I am also think that there is a beautiful perfume out there that I will like a lot and I will enjoy wearing it. I am right now wearing Enchanted Forest 10 ml. Rollerball that I received in the mail that is different than other fragrances in my large collection, and it smells pretty nice and interesting. I have bought a few that have not arrived yet, and I enjoy waiting for them and wondering how they will smell. I enjoy my kind of obsession with perfumes. Hi Cherie, you have already learnt so much during your journey, congrats! I personally was doing quite well until we reached November. My low buy suffered kind of a metamorphosis... In my case eyeshadow palettes are a thing I really enjoy. But this is like perfume, no one can finish three eyeshadow palettes in let's say 2 years ( this is the time frame I give myself to use and repurchase) and I went from 6 to 8 palettes.... The goal was from 6 to 3-4. I have some issues with procrastination in an area of my life and eyeshadow and perfume seem to have a calming effect on my head.... It is a journey indeed :) happy new year !
Sonia, I totally understand. I have way too much makeup in general also, for the type of person that I am as I hardly wear much makeup on a day to day basis. I dont even know HOW to wear half of it, but I love it all. So odd.
Thanks for answering so many questions! I know I put down quite a few of those. 😆I think if you did wears of your fragrances with certain similar notes, you could quickly determine your favourites. Then, if you were ever of the mind to declutter some to reduce the amount you own it would be an easier way to make a decision. Otherwise, you could use your tracking to see which fragrances you haven't been wearing in order to rediscover them. You could have an under loved fragrance month, where you intentionally wear the things you have ignored? Just some ideas and thoughts from watching this video. Thank you for a great video! It has got me thinking about a no buy too. Do you have any tips for this: that moment when you wear a perfume and enjoy it so much that you immediately start scrolling for your next perfume fix? It is bizarre but this is what happens to me.
I know this well. Yes my remedy for that was to go and start sniffing and spritzing perfumes in my own collection, that really solidified for me how many things I owned but kept forgetting about. Or I would start digging through my boxes of samples and quickly realise that there would be dozens more that I liked just as much (or even more) and I knew I couldn’t buy everything that I liked!
