- Testing out the Speer Gold Dot ammunition through short barrels. The .357 Magnum is a 135 gr short barrel JHP and the 9mm is a standard 147 gr JHP. I am doing my 10% Clear Ballistics test with 4 layers of denim, with and without rib simulation and also a longer range practical accuracy test. I know some people will get on here raging and complaining about my 9mm load choice, but we have to understand that this 9mm load is only 12 grains heavier than the .357 load, and going lower in weight than the .357 load is 11 grains lighter so it's a toss up. Also I have tested to death the lower weight 9mm load so I wanted to see how well this one does. People need to understand that much of the time my "VS" testing is not to put two calibers in competition against each other as much as it's an excuse to test two loads in one test! We all win here!

@cloverleafsippa713 I haven't had a chance to do any testing on them yet. My only real opinion without first hand experience is you better know your carry rounds, as some could pull from the case under recoil.

So I believe the information on ballistic performance gathered here is VERY relevant to todays trends in self defense. Making high quality videos like this is fun, but it is also a lot of work. Ammo is hard to get, and choices are limited, so it's very difficult to get exact comparisons, between calibers. I really like this channel, and I am very thankful that I can benefit from it. Rock on, young man…and let the ragers rage!

I like seeing different loads, bullet weights and barrel lengths whenever I watch ammo testing and your channel never disappoints. Anybody bitching about a comparison being “unfair” is missing the point of testing ammo. I don’t care what round “wins” or “loses”. I want to know how all kinds of bullets behave with different barrel lengths. Great info as usual man.

My best advice is find 1 bullet and weight that works and stick to it because all different brands and weights have different points of impact and it'll confuse you if you over do it and have 6 different types of ammo with different weights.. find 1 in each weight that you want that works and stick to it

The old Federal Nyclad loads were quite the trick.
I've got some of the 38 special Nyclads I took on a trade. They are the 125gr- standard velocity load. I carry them in my 90's model Rossi 88 stainless snub. It's an Interarms marked Rossi- non plus P rated. In my testing, the Nyclads do seem to have shallow penetration. They were considered one of the top 38 snub nose loads back in the '70s.
Yes they were, I used them on water moccasins in the 80s. Very explosive on a snake head.

That's good. Those rounds, even in small pistols, are good defensive rounds even at 50 yards.

I got lucky and scored an sp101 match champion, 357/2.25", and within a month scored a box of that 135 grain gold dot ammo. I was debating carrying it vs some full house 125 sjhp's. Looks like they are both good choices! Thanks for the vid Sam!
FINALLY! I’ve spent so much time trying to find this unicorn .357 load for a short barrel revolver. It makes a concealable J-Frame snubby a good defensive tool with the power of a 9 mm and without ridiculous .357 recoil expected in a light short barreled gun like a 340PD. Nice job as always.
Gold dots have always been my favorite ammo, I have short barrel .357 for my Taurus 605 and now prices are gonna go up cause of your recommendation, THANKS A LOT!!!!
I’m a big fan of the 135gr Gold Dot short barrel load in my S&W model 19 .357mag snubbys and 66 snub. Great video. Like you mentioned, the only 147gr load I have ever gotten to expand reliably and constantly from a 3.4”-3.5” barrel is the HST. Thanks for taking the time.

Never been a fan of the 147 gold dot in short barrels. Prefer the HST. The gold dot in the snubbing did well.
The 9mm actually did better than I expected,out of a 4" or greater barrel it would probably work fine. Regarding the .357, their short barrel .38+p works well and with just a little more power makes it work even better.
I need to test it again. I did like 4 years ago, but in just water jugs lol.

I really appreciate your videos. They are fun to watch and you seem to cover all my favorite calibers. 357 mag is maybe my favorite handgun caliber. I know a lot of people carry 38s in short barreled 357s but to me, if I buy a 357 mag it's because I want to use 357 mag ammo.

I have the GDSB rounds in my Ruger LCR for my daily carry. To me, it has lower felt recoil and muzzle flash than other .357 rounds. A close second is Hornady Critical Defense.
I mean, yeah I shot the CD recently and I think I did mention how I was amazed at the velocity being full power even though they have less recoil. I think what it is, is the Critical Defense .357 Mag uses a shorter case than normal, so they can up the pressure on less charge and get full power with less powder and recoil.
I carry a 3" .357 Magnum and the GDSB is my carry round, so I really appreciate this test. As others said above, this isn't really a test of one caliber against another as much as this is how A does from this carry option, and this is how B does from this similar carry option. Thanks for the testing, including the longer distance shooting. The people who complain about that section of your testing are the ones who are afraid to shoot their handguns at longer distances and see how poorly they are doing. I was in LE and over a couple year period I had three incidents of "long range" for pistols. One of them was at the best part of 70 yards, down hill, at night! We do need to practice at distance!
Speer Gold Dots always perform well in .357 Magnum. It might be helpful to show the bullet tips close up before they are fired. The revolver round had a very large cavity.

Great test! I'm impressed with this load in .357. Expansion was decent and this is good alternative to the full power loads. I hope you can get some 135 .38 +p to test....
Thank you. I will look for them. I have actually done other videos with .357 Mag loads in the snub, and they were so bad that I never released them, along with the ones I have tested and released, so I am confident to say this one is the one.

Great video; nice shooting. So far my best (read: subjective) snub nose combination is my Ruger SP101 2.25" barrel with the Buffalo Bore 38 Special +P 158gr SWC rounds. But these short barreled .357 Mag rounds look capable as well.

We shot milk jugs, (1/2 gal), filled with water from a 2" S/W 642, and got Speer Gold Dot=.45, Federal Critical Defense=.45, and Remington Golden Saber=.46. All were around 124-127 grains. All about the same speed, 900-950. All this in water. I wonder why your 9mm rds do not expand in test media. Your 357 did very good.
.357 Magnum snubbies are so cooooool! They will deafen you and hurt. But I have full confidence they are one shot stoppers.
The velocity on tbe 357 was a bit lower than i expected, but performance was good and consistent. The expansion was just about identical between shots, with good penetration. The 135 gr bullet was first used in the 38+p short barrel load, and has a larger cavity to aid expansion. Looks like it works well. Too bad the 9mm was inconsistent. Lots of people swear by it in 4" and longer barrels, and it has a good record. Like many people, it seems to me that 124 gr is the way to go in a short barrel, and there are some good 115 gr loads as well.
Remember when you could find those short barrel formula Speer Gold Dots here and there in .357 Magnum and usually .38 Spl +P. Glad I have tried to be frugal with them while trying to practice. However, would like to see any .357 Mag ammo now especially self defence. Interesting on the 147 gr 9mm ammo. My Sig P938 Legion generally does not like them, however the S&W Shield Plus does not mind. Thanks again Mr. Gun Sam for taking the time to share with us!

Use a sp101 and full house 125g (underwood , freedom munitions,OLD Remington green box,new stuff is weak). and recoil isn’t bad, and destroys any 9mm load you will ever think of.
Not to mention the large shock and muzzle blast and sound has a great debilitating physiological effect on the perpetrator, this is a real thing !

Great video and now we have a winner for the 357 snubbie, that's great. The most powerful is not always the best. Back in the beginning of the year I was telling people what caliber's they're stopping production on. Today on Madman reviews they listed it again. They were the 25 auto, 32acp, 32 H&R, 45gap, 41mag, and the biggest surprise is 40 S&W. Which is the one everyone was arguing with me about, they'd say the 40 is here to stay. When the FBI and other law enforcement agencies switched to 9mm, it just killed the sale's of the 40. Back before our friend the Coronavirus came around, they were just about giving it away. Thanks. Yeah this is it, as I know from testing it in a 4" barrel that it fragments, so the lead alloy or thickness in key areas was made just to perform in a snub, and we see it does.

So much for revolvers being more dependable than autoloaders. I had jamming and hard trigger pulls on my Charter Arms Bulldog 44spl shooting HSM lead roundnose flatpoint ammo and my Ruger SP101 shooting Federal lead roundnose 38spl ammo. Every forth or fifth round I had trouble pulling the trigger and couldn't pull the hammer back. I sprayed it down with Ballistol and dry fired it. Seems to work better but the trigger isn't that smooth. Good thing the target wasn't shooting back.

Yeah, especially with the denim. I always used it but in water jugs it didn't effect it. Half these guys use no denim in gel, which is hard to get great expansion with.
I am carrying these 357 Short Barrels in my S&W 340 M&P. They shoot very well and look like they should perform well. However, Looking at the Website and every dealer I can find, these are "Out Of Stock" or "Discontinued". So I guess that means I have to find a different load. I've been looking at Corbon DPX 357 or the Barnes 357 all Copper round. I've heard that those 2 loads aren't too abusive to the hands in recoil. Guess I have some testing to do.

My 38 Special +P handloads with the 135 grain SBGD average only 110 fps slower than those 357s, when fired from a Ruger LCR (1 7/8" barrel). One of the only decent-weight bullets I trust to expand reliably from snubbies, although I have gotten good results from the 140 grain Hornady XTP (deeper penetration though).
I loaded some 135 +P's before but only got like 800 FPS in a snub. I think I used Universal powder. I typically get really good loads with max charges of Titegroup with XTP's. I don't know why but XTP's always clock faster than Gold Dots even if lets say both are 125 gr.
@@GunSam I use Ramshot Silhouette. It gets better velocities than pretty much any other powder in the 38 +P, and it's flash suppressed, so a lot less "strobe" than Titegroup, LOL. (Titegroup is my go-to for Cowboy loads and knockaround ammo, though.) And you're right about the velocities...Gold Dots are much softer than the XTPs and obturate more, so they have greater bore friction, hence the lower velocities.
@@noahmercy-mann4323 I have found that Titegroup is more flash suppressed the higher it goes. Just max charge it on .38+P and it's great. I don't recall what it does with a max charge for a .357, but it's crap for .357 anyways maxing out of a 4" barrel 125@1,250 FPS.

I cobbled together a cartridge that I call a ".25 short barrel magnum." Out of a 1.125 inch barrel, it pushes a 28 grain airgun slug at least 1400fps. It's kinda scary. Hoping it wont eventually grenade the barrel. 😅

I love your videos, but I will debate this with you. In a short barrel semi auto, I would opt for a 115gr. standard pressure Gold Dot always before a 147. One, the shorter barrel produces lower velocities which will adversely affect the already slower heavy subsonic. Secondly, as a carry round, why buy the lightest guns to carry, then pack them with heavy 147 grainers which make a noticable difference on the hip? The reason we carry the 147 on duty (HST for us), is because we have more likelihood of having to shoot through tactical barriers. Car doors, structure etc...Although this is possible in an off duty small carry gun scenario, most off duty data shows your deadly force encounters will be face to face from close distance. Translating to lighter, faster rounds out of a short barrel. Just my 2 cents. Keep up the fun videos.
I have tested every weight of 9mm, so picking out this video where I used 147 gr doesn't mean much.

I like the 135gr Gold Dot. I think the stuff I have is only in 38 Spl+P, so not quite as hot as the magnum loads. Still a decent round though. The 147s performed in a way that I feel illustrates my preference for 124gr projectiles in 9mm. You do get the penetration. But it seems uncommon for them to open up. That's just my take.
In order to get a 147 to expand you need a lot of velocity. I tested a couple in straight gel one being the T-Series, barely over 1,000 FPS in the 5" and no expansion, but with a Buffalo Bore 147+P+ at 1,150 FPS I got expansion, really good expansion but too much momentum also so overpenetration as well.
The best 357 Magnum snubnose load vs 9mm? All of them.
Yeah, hard to say a .357 is bad. Unless you're MAC and use PMC 150 gr in a snub.

I've never tested it myself, but i'm confused on why you say in the beginning of the video 147 grain is a good load for a short barreled 9mm. I've always heard the opposite, you want a lighter projectile for shorter barrels because heavier bullets won't get enough velocity for expansion in short barrels.. I personally just try to avoid 147 grain 9mm all together. Because all the ballistics tests i've watched showed that it will only expand out of full size 5 inch barrel duty guns. And even then, it still sometimes won't occasionally. (Nvm you do cover this at the end of the video, but it threw me off what you said in the beginning)
I used to load 200 gr 45 MAG TECH flat nose it might be a good try.
Try the Barnes tac xpd in .357. Advertised as 1200 fps in a two inch barrel. I have them loaded in my 605. Would like to see your test with them. Keep up the good work, fellow Michigander.
I like the Barnes bullets. So good only Barnes can kill Barnes! But I have some 125's loaded by double tap that I been meaning to gel test.

I see you using a Taurus 856 or 605 in many of your videos. I know you have a few where you were having issues with an 856. Are you at a point where you endorse them or think they aren’t worth consideration?
I’ve had 3 apart so far and after cleaning up they’ve been as good as anything comparable in size I’ve seen.
Ok, ill be devils advocate this time………if recoil werent an issue, what would be the best performing 357 mag full power load that youve seen in a short barrel.
Im a bigger guy that has no issues at all taking recoil. I choose to carry a 357 lcr and have been carrying gold dots, but i want something with maximum energy and am willing to put up with “punishing” recoil. Lol
Something like a 180-200 grain @ 1700fps maybe?!?! Ok, that may be pushing it (unless its available), but you get the idea.
An 180gr full-house load like that would be insane overkill unless you're worried about getting jumped by a Black Bear. Stick with ~158grainer

If you know ballistics then you should know that with 147gr 9mm you have neutered the round bringing it under 1000fps equals min expansion use 124 or 115gr and even so that snub 357 is still pointless.
Sam what's your favourite 357 for personal protection, taking into account over penetration etc , recoil and stopping power
I think perhaps using titles like simply `.357 Mag 135 Grn. Gold Dot AND 9mm 147 Grn. Gold Dot' as opposed to "VS" might better convey that this is a testing involving two loads but NOT necessarily a competition between the two. I don't think you need to, or should, change anything though. I just think that so much of what we see online is competitive based like all the "VS" testing videos. Most of these guys are so used to that that I think they can't break out of the mindset of everything being a competition.

What would you consider the absolute best 9mm rd and also 357mag rd in short barrel and full size?
120g Lehigh Defense ED in 357 mag is my thoughts.
90g Lehigh Defense ED in 9mm is also my pick.
Overall performance, I would say for 9mm it's Federal HST 124+P and for .357 Magnum it's Remington UMC/HTP 125 gr SJHP. In longer or shorter barrels all of those perform well and the recoil is manageable.
