- Testing the Barnes TAC-XPD into 10% Clear Ballistics gel. The 9mm+P is a 115 gr SCHP rated at 1,120 FPS and I will be testing from my 3.2" Taurus G2C. The .357 Magnum is a 125 gr SCHP rated at 1,200 FPS and I will be testing from my 2" Taurus 605. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.com/user?u=5828221

I don’t know what it is about 357 magnum but it makes me smile every time it comes out to play! 😍
I tested Buffalo Bore 125 GR "heavy" with the xpb yesterday at 1,550 FPS in my 4". It was great
Thanks, Sam ..you get better with every video. Great info.
There’s a Legacy feeling you only get with a quality revolver knowing future generations will still be enjoying it. Thanks for another fun comparison, Sam. SF🇺🇸Kimber revolver fanboy
I like the expansion of the Barnes ammo. I don't mind the ~milder penetration depths.
GS. Good video. Thanks, always a good and interesting comparison. Thanks again for your work in putting these videos together. Take care.
Velocity matters , and that's the criteria I use when I buy defensive ammo .I think if these rounds had been driven a little faster they would've performed better . Thanks Gun Sam , great video as always
Thanks a lot!
Indeed !@@kennethferguson4283
Thanks for the short barrel test!
After watching several of your videos I'm glad I picked 357 for edc
Another informative video. I hadn't seen a reference to vertigo from Sam but noticed it in a comment. I am also a vertigo sufferer (BPPV). I can say that it has affected my life in some of the activity choices that I make. There is no cure but there are some therapies that are said to help. I have tried a few and while some seem to work at least for a while. None seem to be a cure. Basically, I've had to just admit to myself ... "well I guess I won't be doing THAT very much anymore"
Thanks, interesting test. Two calibers that I carry.
Your objective quality evidence and subjective interpretation are spot on. I will pass on it too.
The camera-eye view of the penetration depth is being altered by light refraction. Refraction is the bending of light (it also happens with sound, water and other waves) as it passes from one transparent substance into another, in this case from air to gel block. Bow and spear fishers know all about this phenomenon when aiming at a fish; you have to aim at what appears to be below the fish to actually hit it with the arrow or spear.
The 9 definitely brings more rounds to the party and will no doubt get the job done, especially if you’re in a position that you can Mag dump on the target. But I’d prefer the .357 simply for the better penetration, more energy, and better reliability. And like you I’ll pass on this ammo, much better choices out there for a lot less money. I’ll stick with my Rem HTP 125gr SJHP’s for my .357, a lot more affordable to practice with and a proven record as king of the stopping power hill for 50 plus years. Awesome video as always Sam, thanks! 👍
In 4" and better length barrels in 125gr SJHP it's "King."
Barnes pioneered these copper jobs decades back in the original X and that bullet is very accurate in 30 cal .
In....and we still have at least 1 more 40 great again right?
I filmed another one. There's a few more rounds to test also.
I bought this ammo a while back after seeing a video on it's expansion. I managed to find a smoking deal on them not long after and was able to then dump an entire box of them through my carry gun, a SIG P365 SAS. No feeding/chambering issue whatsoever. I would blame the Taurus simply because that's likely the only difference. Although it could have been a QC issue. Shoot 'em through another 9mm and the Taurus again as a comparison. Opening up to .70 caliber really was the big selling point for me.
When barely adequate penetration is desirable, yet giving good expansion (like at a crowded venue) , I'd carry either one of these. The 9 in a longer barrel, but I'd have no problem with it in a 357 snub. I have some of these in 380. I have some Civil Defense in 357. I hope you feel better soon. Vertigo is very demoralizing.
The Civil defense is known for fragmenting a lot. Lots of shock energy, but inconsistent penetration and would channel. Lots of contamination by fragments can cause cruel and unnecessary suffering, and make it difficult for surgeons to get all the pieces out. Thats why I prefer to carry ammo that produces a quick clean kill or a clean stop. These things may have to be hashed out in court later, and you may have to justify your choice of ammunition to a jury after some dirtbag lawyer tells them you used this ammo to cause their client to suffer.
I still appreciate your testing protocols. Besides lower case volume with monolithic bullets you also have more bearing surface in the barrel for the same weight as copper/lead bullets which increases pressure. Both of these rounds were great in the gel but as you mentioned the difficulty with feeding the chamber and cylinder is not good.
Might think about calling Vortex about the problems. This is not exactly Tula steel case FMJ you bought cheap by the bucket where you might expect a few issues, but it's just range ammo, so no big deal. This is the stuff people pay extra for because they want to be sure there are no problems when lives are on the line.
357 sig and 357 magnum blow 9mm away in every way possible especially in real world shooting results
Damn straight !
Cool story
@@Lateralus1007 cool facts you mean
I have a G3c that I occasionally carry now that I have my concealed carry license. But I'm honestly starting to believe that revolvers are still king, and even better, they are much less likely to be a demonizing factor in court. Only having 5-6 shots out of an "old gun" would still be more than adequate in 99.9% of real world scenarios, plus you couldn't shoot "too many times".
The bad cases are discouraging, as I have recently bought several boxes of both of these exact rounds..... 😖
yep
Good review. Ill be passing on these rounds for carry. Thanks.
357 is my fave
Doubt that Taurus is rated for +p see how long it last I wouldn’t run it . Besides revolvers are just more reliable for carry when you’re life may depend on it
It's rated for +P
You should make a tie-tack out of that 9mm plain gel slug...then sell it to one of us.
I wonder if you should check the setting Def Of the bullet I had that problem with My G.2 C. It was doing the same thing. I receded The bullets and Fixed it It was 005 That Fixed it
It's weird that the cases would not be sized properly. From your reaction with the 357, it's looking like it is loaded hotter or at least as hot as the Buffalo Bore 19H load which uses the shiny Tac-XP 125gr projectile. The expansion is substantial with both loads. So the penetration is still kind of impressive. 150% expansion would give you about 0.54" diameter. I wonder what the coating process is for those bullets. I like the color. I know that's an odd comment to make. Untreated copper takes on an old plumbing looking patina from being handled.
I reacted with my first .357 Mag gel shot as I went single action and didn't feel the trigger press. I had just gotten out of the emergency room for some issues and wasn't feeling the best, but filming needed to be done. Anyways, when Barnes used to do more of a black coat I could swear it was a liquid bluing. With the more grey coating now days, I have no idea what they do to them.
@@GunSam An ER visit? Yuck! I hope you're OK.
I'm wondering what Birchwood Casey would do with copper.
@@Fudmottin My first bout with vertigo. Never had it before so I thought I was dying, figured it was a stroke or heart attack or something. It's probably because I am on a lot of medications, or maybe it's from anesthesia I had a few days prior when I had an endoscopy. Everything came back fine for testing, it still comes and goes.
@@GunSam I hope it clears up for you. I deal with something different that causes similar problems. It's more than a little bit annoying.
@@Fudmottin Thanks. my doctor sent me for an MRI brain tissue scan today. That was a lot of fun being in a coffin for 45 minutes straight. But they found that everything was normal. I went home with a prescription for the drug that's in Dramamine motion sickness pills along with exercises for draining the dislodged calcium crystals from my ear canals that cause vertigo.
So far I have no problem with the round in 357 mag out of trusts mod 60😊
I liked the performance of the rounds, but feed jams and sticking chambers are a deal breaker for me, especially If I'm going to bet my life on it.
Wow 😬😬😬
👍😊🎯
Why did I get a weed butter infuser ad before this video? Also check the 9mm rounds and see if the bullet isn’t seated all the way into the brass case. Had some ammo from a small manufacturer do the same thing to me and that was the reason.
UA-cam ads are based 100% on what YOU have searched for or watched or something of that nature. If an old woman decided to randomly watch one of my videos she would probably get a quilting ad. So ask yourself, why did you get a weed infuser ad before this video.
A proper 357 magnum loaded 125 bullet out of a 3-4 inch barrel is around 800 ftlbs , it is closer in muzzle energy to a standard AR 15 round than it is to a 9mm +p that may have what 400-450 ftlbs? All of this 357 ammo is watered down, the old Remington green box used to move at 1500-1600 now it only moves at 1300-1400 max, The only companies to show full loads of 357 now are Buffalo bore, underwood etc
I wouldn't say that's not quite right. Now If I do recall, I once got a Buffalo Bore 125 gr .357 Magnum up to 794 ft lbs energy from a 4" barrel, but that was really hot. The standard full house load forever and a day is a 125 gr SJHP from a 4" barrel at 1,450 FPS and 583 ft lbs energy. The other standard full house was the original magnum, 158 gr 1,500 FPS from a 8 and 3/8" barrel which equated to 1,235 FPS in a 4" barrel, 535 ft lbs if I recall.
A little disappointed in the feeding issues, as I feed my G27 with these, find them to be very accurate compared to my other ammo, and from what I can see in gel tests they make the biggest shock cavities and have the most consistent expansion and retention by far over jacketed bullets. I have lots of underwood xtreme defenders, which are also superb performers but are the least accurate for me. Idk, may have to go back to good old Hornady critical duties.
Wonder if creep might have changed seating in chamber be safe Peace
I can't imagine it really creeping, but who knows.
@@GunSamloose crimp?
10:56 MAG DUUUUUUUMMMPPPPPPP!!! 😂
The plain gel 357 looked a lot hotter than the MDF shot. Ir you were quite surprised?
No. Wasn't hotter. I was having a weird day health wise and didn't feel the trigger press so that was surprising
COTTON? You gave in to the haters... 🤯
To be honest I just ran out of denim, at at a certain point it kind of doesn't matter. Fabric can clog them HP's either way.
@@GunSam But according to the haters the denim is much worse lol. I had a guy tell me today that you can't shoot the block more than once or it compromises the results of the following shots 🤣 I left that one alone- not wasting a single breath on that harvard scholar...
@@BuckeyeBallistics It might compromise my clear gel in the same channel, but it seems like organic gel would essentially heal itself and be good to go again in the same spot. But I think you mean he meant even in a different spot, which is indeed funny.
@@GunSam Yes, a different spot.
The Hollow Points are too Wide. Their eat up your feed Ramp.
I have 1 Barnes in the Chamber, and other Defense rounds after.
Rack a few rounds and check the hollow points.
🙂👍
Vertigo sucks, I can empathize. I get migraines and vertigo. Hope you feel better soon.
Thanks.
Very nice!... A good comparison for my new Canik Mete MC9 (😉).
Thank you for supporting Turkey 🇹🇷 and not America 🇺🇸
@@moobutt Awww... 😭 I support others as well; Brazil, and yes also America (I have a S&W and some Rugers too). I don't discriminate, lol.
Not trying to hate on Taurus but I have had nothing but trouble out of them.
I have had mixed results. Only owned one semi auto and it's good. Their revolvers give me trouble with 50% of them. One will be decent, next one junk, next one fine, next one junk
Vertigo? That sucks eggs. Especially if the room is spinning. I get vertigo ''light''. Not so bad.
It bugs the snot out of me to see young people afflicted with such things like RA and vertigo and the like. Those are more common amongst older people and not a surprise if it happens.
Take care Mr Sam.
My daughter thinks I'm old though lol. I'm not old but I'm older than most people think.
.357 wins again 🎉
Newer 9mm rounds are hitting surpassing 357 magnum
RoaR
In my opinion the barns TAC-X All copper is not as good as the old CORBON DPX All copper hollow point barns used to manufacture for CORBON
357 more power than 9mm. But 9mm.all you need to stop a man.😮😮😮
By all means, let's play a shell game so no one knows what's what.
Dude...
