I also discuss the apparent danger of motorcycling and two of the more esoteric aspects of how to stay alive and ride safely -- when going hard on your Harley Davidson. Both of these things have served me well for the past 4 decades of riding.

Well, you hit one of my things I do. I definitely don't ride as hard anymore and we don't lane split here. I always play the game of "Who is trying to kill me?" and it keeps me aware of everyone around me. I am usually looking to lock eyes with drivers around me. I also always listen to my inner voice.

The following tip has served me well for 30+ years… when you want to change lanes , no need to look over your shoulder to check the dead space. Speed up to the next car in the lane you want to move to , pass that car and get over easy peasy. Anytime I’m driving or riding and I see someone glancing over their shoulder tells me all I need to know about their abilities and I get away from them . Another one is stay out of the middle of the lanes get in the left tire lane or the right tire lane of a car, not the middle that’s where the oil builds and is often more slippery than the other two options. Just my two cents🤷🏼♂️… love your channel and your topics Aymen. If we weren’t continents apart I’d be trying hang , you rock man

Brilliant...unless you're approaching a stop light and need to get into a turn lane, or you're on a road with no one in front of you. Anytime I'm reading and I see someone summarize "all they need to know" about another person from a single event...it tells me all I need to know about that person.

At 68 years old and have been riding motorcycles off and on since I was about 12 years old...
I anticipate, and watch traffic just the same when I drive a car or truck as I do when I'm riding.
I have noticed while in the passenger seat of a car or truck with someone that is not a rider they don't anticipate and avoid slow down etc. as well as anyone that is an experienced motorcycle rider...

Best collection of stay alive advice I've seen. All the core curriculum sprinkled with experience derived tidbits like the accordion and the many considerations to be made when overtaking. Hey, sometimes when I'm in The Flow my bike speaks to me. I can hear it whisper, "why don't we always ride like this, pussy?". Great stuff man, and all true.

Great set of points. Some days faster than others depending on how I feel and I have turned around gone on back home other days. Just don’t have it that day, other days I’ve experienced the flow state and it is heavenly. Riding is such a stress relieving activity for me. You have to pay attention instead of ruminating over everything else you have going on in your life.

I ride with a group of riders that all go pretty hard most of the time! We call flow state as having or not having your “mojo”!

Best tip is the group rides with the elastic band effect as you said Aidan. Do plenty of poker runs and group rides, see it all to often guys out front take off and midway to end of the pack it all starts to go bad as they over compensate to keep up but then are so hard on the brakes not to hit someone or shoot through the pack on the far left almost off the road or to the right and into on coming traffic. Great video mate keep up the good work even if it just helps one rider its done the job.🤙

Several years ago I had a long cold ride and I found that my body was losing its coordination. I was having a hard time balancing at slower speeds coming to a stop smoothly. It was as if I had never ridden before.
Lesson learned, proper cold weather gear and stopping now and then to warm up.
PS, that's how I winterize my bike, I ride it all year !

I have complete confidencein in him lane splitting or whatever he need to do to put us in a safe position on the road or just to have some fun riding hard. Theres much more to it thats developed over years of course but short story. As a over the road trucker for 40+ years everything youve pointed out is outstanding. For me as a biker and trucker it all equals to finding a way OUT! How can i escape a bad situation? Same goes for walking across a truck stop parking lot at 1am. I definitely like to get out in front of the traffic, and try to be aware of what's going on around me. When possible I plan my ride, this is not just where I am going but also what time of day / night .....avoiding busy areas if possible.

I probably wouldn’t do the splitting, I’m just not used to it. so not comfortable.
Gear, your comfort, your body, your life, your choice.
My choice, I’ve been off tumbling down the Tarmac without the bike. I was wearing good basic gear. It made the difference between life altering injury, serious death and walking away mostly unhurt. Just my pride.
Leave room for error. I’m not infallible. I make mistakes. I miss things. With a little bit of wiggle room I can recover.

I call my technique flowing, and generally you have to adjust one’s flow for safe, stress free, timely travel. I don’t like being in the crowd, it’s just to unsafe with so many unskilled and distracted drivers nowadays. My flow keeps me away from all of that. My riding is on the spirited side mostly.

all good tips, Id like to add two: one you touched on under know your bike. but practice, both high speed and parking lot maneuvers. buy some cones and use them once a week. ive been ridding for 50 years and still can't pass up a good empty space. two when you can't fillter at a red light ( but also all stops) come to a long slow stop keeping your foot on the break and watch you mirrors. people aren't driving anymore and we are lucky if they look up occasionally. in most of the U.S its illegal to fillter i say do it anyway its better to be out of traffic than in it.I

Unfortunately or fortunately lane splitting is illegal in my state in the USA. I move faster than the traffic but not so fast that I can’t stop in the room I have to move around slower vehicles. All your suggestions are great. Once in while it’s nice to crack the throttle wide open just to clean out the carbon. I'm diggin' your videos along with your attitude Sir. I'm from Minnesota in the USA and I just thought I'd let you know that in a lot of states, lane splitting is a real no-no... And while I'm certainly not here to argue with you, maybe the idea of staying alive THIS way might be prefaced with a dose of caution regarding not only the laws in particular areas, but the evil intent of ass-holes who don't like you getting ahead of them at the red light. I ride aggressively (I tend to ride faster than traffic). We don't split lanes in Memphis. I don't ride "in the shadow" of big trucks.....I pass them or give them space. I try to maintain an escape route at all times. At intersections, I look before I go....I assume that people will run the light.

As someone who rides motorcycles and drives cars and trucks daily.....the one thing that continually comes to light is peoples attitudes and behaviors by both riders and vehicle drivers! I see both good and bad scenarios and a lot of the possible instances can be avoided! I am constantly aware of most vehicles on the roads around me and adjust my driving and riding, taking nothing for granted.....but using common sense and self preservation is key. If they can't see you, then your probably not in the right place on the road either. Ride to survive....but have fun too 😎

Dear Aymen, is there a particular reason your videos are always adressed to Harley riders? I know that much of your content applies to the phenomenon of older guys getting back into riding or embarking on their mid life crisis, and that this very often applies to Harley riders, but there are many riders in the same position that are riding many other types of motorcycle. Your content is great; it's such a shame to limit your audience to mainly Harley riders.
As for this particular video, I can relate very well to the elastic band effect as I lead a group on an annual rally which can be anything from 45 to 95 riders. Riders at the rear often accuse me of leading at speeds of 110 to 130kmh when in fact I don't exceed 105kph.
All the other aspects you covered, I relate to as well

I ride moderately hard when by myself the wife bitches too much if I go to fast. I ride exactly like you do I look way ahead and just plan on some dipshit doing something stupid. I’ve been riding 59 years and I’ve always liked hp and speed my last bike before I went total Harley Davison was a brand new V65 magna. At the time I bought it it was the fastest bike in the world and believe me I rode it that way. So I hear you brother, I think that experience is the best thing to up your skills. I’ve had one bad spill back in 2017, I spent three months in hospital and believe me I learned from that one too.

The best way to achieve that magic 'flow state' is to fit a set of Metzeler Cruisetec tyres. And be comfortable by wearing the right gear for the conditions as the weather dictates.

@@OldNotDead-ClubI didn't look at your bike, but I fitted a Cruisetec to the front wheel my Softail Slim a couple of months ago and it's breeze to ride now. My rear Michelin Commander III has just done 20,000km and I've got a new Cruisetec on order which should arrive by the end of the month, so I'm really looking forward to having Cruisetecs on both wheels. I may sound a bit biased, but they're a really nice tyre to ride on, and complimentary to that 'flow state' you describe. I know that tyre brand can be a bit of a personal, tribal and cliquey debate, but I'm a convert :)

@Jonathan L I believe the rears have a higher weight rating. I run the triple 8s on all of my FLH AND FLHRs... except for the 60s, 70s, and one early 80s FLHs.
Lane Splitting or Lane Filtering is legal in California, one of the few states in the USA. I will filter between lanes, but almost always only once traffic in front of me has come to a complete stop and not moving, only to prevent being rear ended by traffic. However, once at the front of traffic, once the light turns green, I always visually "clear the intersection" looking left or right, before entering it. There's too many illegal drivers here in CA driving without a license, current registration and no insurance, to risk being the first to enter an intersection, with so many people being in a hurry and flat out running red lights. Traffic enforcement is horrible here, any more. Lot's of outlaw drivers. "Clearing" visually an intersection is a matter of self preservation. Sometimes the person racing off the green light ends up T boned and the statistic for the red light runners around here.
I always pass tractor trailer trucks, and motor homes with a wide berth, to miss that big cushion of side blast air pressure experienced while going past them.
As with being a pilot and self assessing health and well being before going flying, the same goes on before going for a motorcycle ride. My motorcycle is recreation for me, not my prime vehicle for transport or tasks. So, driving instead of riding is always an option or consideration for me, if I don't feel rested or well enough to go ride. Riding intensifies all the levels of senses you need to use while going down the road. The laws of physics are not in your favor, so it requires much more attention and vigilance. Riding is not a time and place to be slacking on your attention levels. It should be all immersive of all your senses.

When I lived-in in California in my twenties, I was surprised lane splitting was legal (its the only one where it's allowed) I'm guessing in your country it's legal?
Here in Virginia your not even allowed to ride side by side in the same lane.
The single biggest danger in the places I ride regularly (I live in the countryside in Virginia) is whitetail deer, they are everywhere, and will literally jump out of the woods right in front of you, and if you see one along side of the road there's usually three or four more you don't see in the woods.
Another problem is that people in cars seem to be blind to motorcycles, I've had them look straight at me and still pull out in front of me like I wasn't there.
The only one responsible for your safety is yourself.

I will be honest, taking advanced training classes should be #1. I'm one of the founders of The Litas Ogden group, we push advanced classes, schedule and help fill, and as a founder, I lead by example. I have taken at least two advanced courses past the beginner, which I never really took because I have been riding since I was 5. Hence..
I ride very hard, 🤣🤣🤣. I actually had a dude who I haven't seen in years just yesterday he was telling me how I ride more like a dude! No insult to me, I ride hard, get everything I can out of the bike. But men are the lowest % who actually take more riding class past the basic. Women are more likely to take the advanced classes and care more about not falling into bad habits.
Ride like your invisible. Head on a swivel, in town Speed limit or less. In the heat, cooling vests allow for you to keep your protective gear On! Buy a vest and a neck cooler, we ride with a camelback. I freeze the bag with 3/4 full or almost full if I know that I won't need it till later in the day, it'll melt away and you can drink while you ride, you won't get heat exhausted. I keep a 2 gallon zip lock bag in my bag to revive the vest and neck cooler on the really long hard hot drives long distance., 👍

I don't lane split but the plan would be constructed in the same manner as any other "get out of a dangerous situation" plan. Sometimes there is nothing you can do

#1 way to die on motorcycle is failure to negotiate a turn under the influence of alcohol. I'll be the last one to tell you not to drink and ride but I will tell you to know your limitations that shit dont make you Eddie Lawson. #2 way to die is car making left hand turn in front of you because they looked right thru you. Go thru the intersection with another car they see it. All the other ways to die are such a small percentage you can almost disregard them. Over 50 years on these things has taught me one thing? This is a perishable skillset and if you haven't been riding regularly you just cant fake it and pretend. Just a couple of weeks and it takes me a while to get back in the groove. You must practice emergency stopping and work up to board scraping lean angles. DO NOT let the first time using either be when your life depends on it! Oh and if your the better rider try not to drag your friends off the road they will all ride beyond their skill level to keep up. I just ride in the back and they dont crash into me there...

@@ronniebaker7782 not sure if you realize it but pavement is way harder than dirt. Seems obvious but maybe not. Another obvious thing is that harder objects crack the skull easier. Hence pavement cracks the skull very easily compared to dirt. Your logic is exactly backwards.

Spidey senses are a real thing, it’s actually anticipation to the point of precognition. If you think that d!psh!t in the mini-van is going make a left with the right turn signal on, he probably will.
For me, I ride like I’m on fire on my KTM, not the HD. That’s comparative though. I still ride at least as fast as a fast HD rider. Actually found that out today, ran up on a group of HD riders and quickly worked my way through and around until they were no longer in my rear view.

Nr. 8 could be: stick to the law (most of the time). A big fine (or worse) can kill your hobby. So, I don't see this ghost rider as a good rider. His way of driving can kill people; imagine him crashing with 300kph on a family. Thanks for the vid #OBND! I always enjoy them.

I cruise, don’t lane split… don’t wheely exhaust not stupidly loud just the right rumble…. Heads in swivel. It’s annoying when you see another motorcycle going twice or more speed limit in and out though traffic
