It's incredible how different the second hand market is over there. In South Africa an E39 in that condition would set you back at least 3 times as much. Checking listings I found a 2003 525i touring with 193,000km and they want R120,000 (5200 pounds!). I've definitely noticed the value of these cars are increasing now. I think because they are worth so little and somewhat expensive to maintain, a lot of them are dying now.
Recently got a 528i Sport, I'd say if you're prepared to spend a grand or so in getting it sorted, you'll have an amazing car. I love mine.
Buy one , enjoy one - I owned a 530d up to 180,000 and ALWAY regret selling it - you will never fail if you have a good service history
Talking about fuel economy - my e39 Touring is a 525d, which usually gives me around 38mpg. That's a power of low end torque for you - less revs, more fuel economy.
Yeah 38mpg isn't bad, I guess it does more on a run? I remember I had a 530d M sport auto but was never impressed by the economy

It's 47-50mpg on motorway, which is a very respectable number for a 20 year old car, being this heavy and clumsy that it is.

Is it true that the parts for this E39 are starting to be hard to find?? And the automatic transmission decompose itself with time? or are they reliable? Hopefully I can get an asnwer! Thanks!!
My daughter gets 28mpg out of her 2013 Kia Venga auto😳! FFS she'd be better off with this! Better buy her a ticket too 😁
28mpg?! that's terrible for a modern car, what engine is that then?
@@GeoffBuysCars 1.6, 42mpg on a run, 28mpg is normal mixed driving. Full autos are thirsty on most small cars but she has auto only licence.
