    Musk is a dreamer. Just seems to me American capitalism has been avoiding dream development, the pursuit of dreams. Good dreams are, in my opinion, essential to Progress. My thinking is that when Starships start moving 100 ton payloads into space en route to Mars or not!!, near-Earth space industry will kick-in. There'll begin to occur an in-space "Boomtown" phenomenon. This activity of near-Earth industry may vastly dwarf whatever activity that may occur on Mars.

      It would be cheaper and easier to take collected asteroid rich 'rocks' to the moon and break them down and process them there. After processing, then launch the purified product from the moon to earth in a Starship or slap an ablative shield and parachutes to the encapsulated product in purpose built steel shells. That way rare Earth minerals would supply the technology for commerce to keep running. It may be cheaper to do that, than mine the sea-bed. And no protests about impacting the sea life. And there's no air pollution on the moon.

      Yeah, people try to say there's no demand for so much lift capacity. I've seen so many interesting plans that are just waiting for something like Starship to make them a reality. If just a few of those plans bare fruit the world will be a very different place.

    Elon must be a fan of '70s sci-fi to use Moonbase Alpha as the name. I hope it doesn't suffer the same fate as in Space: 1999.

      LOL We don't want the moon to go anywhere. That would cause our stable North and South poles to start shifting from their 'stable' 23.5º and start moving. This would alter our seasons and with no moon, no tides, so all the creatures that rely on that ebb and flow would have to adapt or die. That's sure to raise a stink 😁 No nukes on the moon then????

    SpaceX is grossing at least $312 million a month from Starlink subscriptions. That is a healthy funding to keep Starship progress moving forward.

    • @David-yo5ws
      @David-yo5ws 5 місяців тому

      Well, yes. But that has to pay off the infrastructure of the Starlink System first, before you can consider it profit to move Starship forward. And like most start-up businesses, that takes at least 5 years to reach the make-or-break stage.
      6,000 Starlink's is a lot of cost and a big outlay to have up there in orbit. But it's starting to pay off and places like Alaska and other remote regions, are open to growth for business. And new home owners. Some people are happy to live anywhere, as long as the internet is available. I wouldn't mind going to Canada for a few years. A change is as good as a holiday, they say.

    As I watched IFT 3 soar into the sky I was reminded of the words of Neil Young:
    "I dreamed I saw the silver spaceships flying In the yellow haze of the sun.There were children crying, and colors flying all around the chosen ones. All in a dream, all in a dream, the loading had begun. Flying Mother Nature's silver seed to a new home in the sun."
    Never in the course of Human history has this dream felt more real.

    • @David-yo5ws
      @David-yo5ws 5 місяців тому +2

      Wow. So true. I wonder why Neil Young chose silver, cause every other rocket is orange, white or black!
      And if Elon can get the 330 tonnes of thrust he says they are working towards, for a Raptor engine: 10,890 tonnes of thrust for a Booster Launch (INSANE!!), will indeed send silver spaceships, with Mother Natures 'seeds' of hope, for a continued existence, to another planet. Wonder if they will take me, when I will be 75? Probably not. Missed the boat. But I guess I could sponsor somebody and do interplanetary mail, like a pen-pal to support them?

    Thanks for the dual updates from Elon's recent Starship talk and from Tokyo.
    Some of SpaceX's ambitions are probably exaggerated, but if they even achieve a fraction of what they're promising, we're still all in for an awesome future!

    • @tonyelsom6382
      @tonyelsom6382 5 місяців тому +3

      If you binge some of their COO's interviews, you'll be assured most of those ambitions will be true by the end of THIS decade. We all know how Elon time works, so, unless you're an ignorant critic, looking at the history of SpaceX and Tesla, not to mention the absolute dedication of their staff you'll totally believe this will happen.
      I'm not a mindless fanboy though, and I think of Elon as a pretty down to earth yet somewhat eccentric personality.

      @@tonyelsom6382 welp the new mars ideas are VERY am ambitions and probably wont happen in a while,. One of the biggest chalenges spacex has to overcome is orbital refueling. orbital refueling has tons of chalenges on its own and has never been done on such i big scale. Problems like floating bubbles of fuel, new pumps, non leaking pipes, docking.. etc are big problems for the starship team to overcome. This is the greatest chalenge ever. also elon promised like 8 launches last year and they just launched two unsuccesful flight(none of them reached their goals)

I happen to be a space enthusiast since the '69 Moon landings, I STUDY everything related..I'm not so into Musk's other endeavors, but I do know this, there's no stopping the guy..by the end of this decade he will be a trillionaire, mostly as a result of his Starlink activities and of course, SpaceX. Do I think he'll go to Mars?..Most probably not, he'll be too old by the time Starship is a regular thing to Mars. And yes, I don't think that will happen until at least 2035-8..Also, there will have to be at least a facility the size of a mall, which I also don't think will happen soon. 🚀

    Fun update from Japan.
    I'm excited for humanity to travel to Mars. However the reality of humans settling on Mars is that they would quickly start loosing bone density and muscle mass. This will make them physically weaker than us on earth. Since Mars has 1/6 earth's gravity. A person gets weaker because muscles need less force/strength to work and the bones don't need to be as thick/strong in a low gravity environment. This will also have terrible effects on the heart. Effects would likely be even greater on those born on Mars. Over time Humans/Martians on Mars might become a bit taller, but as mentioned with thinner/less dense/ bones and weaker muscles. People that live on on Mars long enough might not be able to ever vist earth.
    Exercise is not enough to stop the drastic negative effects of low gravity on the body.
    I really hope scientists develop real solutions to prevent too much physical change. Im sure information Nasa has learned studying the effects of zero G on astronauts will be helpful.

    And with a permanent presence on Mars, it's a relative hop, skip and jump to the mining of the asteroid belt, as outlined in many science fiction stories: Niven's Known Space, The Expanse, etc... The abundant raw and precious materials from the belt would be game changing.

    • @David-yo5ws

      And building a telescope on Mars, would allow a much earlier detection system for rouge asteroids heading towards Earth's orbit.
      It will be interesting to see what the NASA Psyche Mission will reveal in 5 years time too.
      But the real shortage at the moment, is Helium. So some sort of 'air scoop' 'mining ship' needs to orbit Earth and filter, collect, bottle and return the He back for the space industry and scientific instruments to continue their work. Or fly through the clouds of Venus??? Mining has got to be the priority for future security of space travel.

Imagine a Booster with 10,890 tonnes of thrust. And Elon said the tail plume would be even longer. • @MichaelWinter-ss6lx
    @MichaelWinter-ss6lx 5 місяців тому

    Update ;•) but still with chemical propulsion. Elon can make his Raptor engines ten times better than now, and they're still only good for LEO, or at max to our Moon and back again. They can be used to push cargo to Mars and anywhere else. But chemical rockets are useless for manned space flight beyond our Moon.
    We'll await the Moonbase. That must be done first. Any bit further will need a ship with a reactor onboard. That kind of Starship will probably never land on a planet anymore, though it could still land and launch with fission drive. A plasma drive is yet more powerfull. The reactor could also feed a real powerfull ion drive. That can enable real deep space interplanetary exploration.
    I heard Elon favour ion drives once. To do anything meaningfull, they just need much more electricity than solar panels can give to them. And they're fast; but not strong enough for landing or launching a Starship. We will see several different distinguished types of Starship. They are already thinking about this at SpaceX. I'd love to see if they come to the same conclusions as me.

    20 years might be within Musk's Life time. He might live to see it and even visit Muskville. However, self sustaining requires a lot of people and stuff. What must also be considered is attrition and turnover. Colonists will suffer accidents, illnesses caused by the mars environment and the environment of the enclosed habitats. Mental health may be more a problem than physical health. With one million you will need a police force and if they are mostly Americans then their will be murders, lots of them. Some may even die of old age, or infant mortality. Children will suffer from thin and brittle bones in the low gravity. Just to keep a core fit active number of colonists will mean a constant shuttle every two years of hundreds of Starships. Good luck Muskvilleites.

    How about a starship that lands on the moon. Then gets laid down onto its side. The engines are removed and shipped back to earth. Simple earth (moon) moving rovers scrape and push material around and then over the starship burying it. Repeat this process and link them together to get the first starship lunar base. Then a door could be cut in the bottom of the laying on its side starship and tunnels excavated into the moon creating a large underground habitat.
    I kinda feel like as this all progresses the mantra will become prove it’s doable on the moon first then improve it and do it on mars.
    Alternately, you could do the same thing without laying it on its side. It would just take more time and material to bury the bottom half of starship. All the scraping and moving surface regolith would also give the benefit of clearing a landing pad. Sure would be nice to have the ability to move starships around once landed.

    I’m thinking they have the moon landing orientation all wrong. With the success of their gymnastic landing proficiencies demonstrated to date, why wouldn’t a horizontal landing have far more advantages than a vertical landing?
    1). Offloading of cargo would be drastically simplified with a larger cargo hold access allowing for larger cargo component delivery.
    2). Crew risk reduced by not having to ride, endure, and rely on a cable driven access system, jointly shared with cargo deployment.
    3). Internal space orientations would be two full decks spanning 60-70 feet instead of three or four decks spanning 33 feet.
    4). A three legged landing posture (or four) in the horizontal would give far better stability for movements within and without the spacecraft.
    5). Landing orientation in 1/6th G would be accomplished by a pre-landing flip with set down being accomplished using Super Draco maneuvering thrusters.
    6). After landing, hydraulic leveling systems in the struts would ensure true deck reference to lunar or Martian surface, something not possible in the vertical landing scenario due to tipping constraints.
    7. Fold down cargo access door would allow immediate crew entry and exit regardless of cargo positioning or loading evolutions.
    8). Cargo deployment would not be a center of gravity issue as it will be with the vertical landing evolution. Fat, low, and inherently stable.

    2:30 Clearly Elon's companies are developing some of this stuff. Expect there to be something like a Cybertruck on Mars. He's got The Boring Company for doing underground excavation. He even tossed out the idea for Hyperloop. Hoping someone else will pick up on it and make it a reality before he heads off to the Red Planet.
