Always a problem when television and movies have astronauts landing on planets or travelling at warp and doing it in one hour. The public expects the same and expects SpaceX to light the candle yesterday. Just don't get bored, these things take time.
Boeing and Lockheed were never going to make any rockets reusable as long as they could keep charging $200 million + to the government (in 1980's dollars) for a launch. The EELV program of the 1990s was all about increasing reliability, not about reducing costs.
Yeah now they can’t justify the cost so now they are mad. Probably dirty officials and politicians are getting payouts from them (Lockheed,Boeing, blue origin to name a few) to slow or even halt SpaceX.
@@Mrbfgray I think they could have done it, but they had no incentive. Early on some had looked at making the S-IC (1st stage) of the massive Saturn V recoverable and reuseable, but they only did a study on it. And it was never funded by NASA. Boeing wasn't going to do it on their own.
@@rosswarren436 I don't think so. Both companies literally laughed at Elon's notion of landing and reusing rockets, and look how inept they turned out to be. It's just barely physically possible to do what SpaceX has made routine.
@@Mrbfgray reuse of rocket stages was contemplated long ago. One of my aerospace engineering classes did some basic calculations on it in the early 1980s as a "what if" exercise; to examine the thermal aerodynamic heating on a 1st stage to see how much we'd need to slow it down such that it wouldn't be too damaged. Of course, SpaceX has use of some incredible ceramic tiles used at the bottom of the 1st stage around the engines today which helps immensely. Boeing and Lockheed had no incentive to make anything reuseable as long as they could charge $150 to $250 million per launch in 1990 dollars. You have to give SpaceX credit though for many of the technological innovations on the Falcon vehicles...Cold gas thrusters, benign pneumatic systems for vehicle separation and fairing separation, and most of all what must be some very good avionics for GNC. That have honed all that down to a fine art. Falcon 9 and Starlink go hand in hand. Launching so many satellites would never have been economically viable on throwaway vehicles like the Atlas 5. Now, everyone else is playing catch up, including the communist Chinese who are making a clone of the Falcon 9. The large "Goliath" aerospace companies did laugh at little "David" SpaceX when they first started. They hoped they'd fail. It was documented well in AW&ST. They aren't laughing now.

I saw a snip of the interview in the last episode and my brain was blown. I could write a book on this subject without thinking about it. Humanitarian first Tesla- no one believed and laughed. Success and proved them all wrong. Space X - took the lesser end of a multimillion dollar deal from the United States govt and proved not only his heroes wrong, but also the rest who said they could not compete with the likes of Boeing, but yet Space X will rescue stranded astronauts from the ISS due to Starliner failure. Twitter- Took the brand and reshaped the company into a better platform we now know as X. I don’t know about the rest, but I am locked in as a huge supporter of Mr Musk and believe in him. Great work Ellie. Keep up the good work. 😊
Looking forward to reading this from an historical perspective. As an engineer, I'd love a more "technical" book chronicling the engineering, design, and manufacturing decisions made during Falcon 9's journey to the Block 5 vehicle. Years ago, you could buy such books on airplanes and such from the AIAA, but there of course isn't one for the Falcon 9. Maybe one day Elon will open up the records and such a book could be written.
It is entirely possible/probable Elon's penchant to speak his mind on any given topic, a quality, shared by a select few others, has had the effect of capturing the attention of certain entities who apparently feel their perceived control threatened, and who may be attempting to move to hinder advancement in SpaceX's ability to progress further. Please remember he is not the sort to allow himself to be intimidated. I would suggest people not concern themselves so much with worrying whether Elon should submit to attempts to "put him in his place", as he has repeatedly demonstrated every attempt to intimidate has been and will likely continue to be met with an even more determined push to succeed.
More likely, it's going to get his control taken away from him for the good of the companies. He's gone from America's golden boy to America's wacko rich guy that we may need to do something about.
@@astrogatorjonesSo if that is the case, why does all of your previous comments are trying to discredit SpaceX and spreading lies in favor of stopping them?
There are two heroic space histories. The first from nazi V2 weapons to Gagarin's first orbit, to the Apollo landings. It was pushing the limits, JPL did the Viking mars landers and the Voyagers to the outer planets, all with tech that was nowhere near up to the job. Then who knows what happened with shuttle or the ISS. Now the second history is SpaceX doing amazing things, pushing the limits of technology again.
Because they are driven by PERSONS, not corporations or organisations.. Groups of people do nothing, individuals are the ones who matters.. von Braun, Musk, Bezos etc.. The difference between SpaceX and Blue Origin is only the top person.. You need a smart driven person who drives development forward, all the rest of people don't matter really
@@ThomasTomiczek Yeah, like Mush said, Space Shuttle could have been pretty good if they kept iterating on it and fixed the issues they found... However NASA didn't work like that anymore after the Saturn V era
The shuttle was not NASA's idea. Congress didn't give NASA enough money to build the reusable shuttle they wanted, so they had to go to the military, who also wanted a launch vehicle. The shuttle ended up being a three-way cluster*ck between nasa, the military, and congress.
@@lordgarion514 Absolutely, but when they shuttle was done and flown, it should then have been rebuilt as v2, and then maybe a v3.. But big companies and govt doesn't work like that.. Once it works, you stop. You should only stop when the next version really doesn't change much at all. For example, while starship is great, and will get to Mars and the Moon, it isn't a great interplanetary ship. Then it's time to start developing a nuclear saltwater interplanetary ship.. You got to do that in orbit or on the moon, as that shit is DANGEROUS.. But compared to space itself, it is not that bad... That is necessary for truly becoming interplanetary...

I for one will not be a pod person Living under Feudalism, never moving more than a couple of miles from where I was born. Will you?
I honestly think that the decision to bring starliner home uncrewed had less to do with crew safety, and more to do with the notion of being able to take a shorter flight home because there were no crew on board, thus enabling less use of thrusters, less time in flight, and therefore less chance that the thrusters would begin to act up again, and thus increase the chance that the vehicle could get back on the ground to be examined, (and of course less chance that a crash might cause death of crew)
ELON MUSK IS A LEADING LIGHT IN THE SPACE INDUSTRY, WHO IS BEING REWARDED FOR A LOT OF NEW HARD WORK !!! GOOD ON HIM, AND IF YOU HAVE BEEN CONCENTRATING, MUSK ENCOURAGES OTHERS COMPETING WITH HIM, IN THE HOPE THAT THESE NEW ENTERPRISES WOULD CONTINUE TO GROW !!!
Anyone who thinks that Elon Musk isn't an absolute genius and his companies are in a League of their own has never started a company and scaled it to millions much less billions of dollars
Absolutely using economics of scale to lower the cost of production of literally rockets like do you know how hard it is to combine rocket physics with business practices. One half you learn about the mathematics calculus, linear algebra, probability, thermodynamics, etc and the other half you learn about equity, macro and micro economics, a functional business model, logistics, etc. Even though Elon has a brilliant team I don’t truly believe people understand the magnitude and scope of his brilliance and genius.
Preach! I'm a small-scale entrepreneur, with seven commercial attempts under my belt (two of which still exist, doing decent business) and four nonprofit attempts (only one survives, it's now 23years old and has apparently forgotten all about me and its other co-founder... c'est la vie). But I would have loved to scale up a company to millions, even billions, of dollars of annual revenue. I did not do so because I discovered I am incapable of doing so! Armchair quarterbacking is easy. Those of us actually in the arena understand the rare energy, focus, and genius of Elon Musk. His politics and his personal life genuinely don't matter unless Elon makes them a factor in his company's growth and success.
Name just one rocket company that has done so much since they got started working on building rockets. Look at the time line for SpaceX and the amount of changes that they have created and proved to do what they have done against all odds.
The point wasn't Elon's politics, it was that overtly announcing his politics was slowing down his progress be creating opposition in the political bodies that grant the approvals he needs to launch. This is such an interesting discussion with two of the class acts of the space community that covers many aspects of the modern space industry which SpaceX are obviously central to.

Stop government stifling SpaceX.
It is definitely on my bucket list before I die to see a starship launch in person. Your Starship launch video and fantastic audio of one of the launches was so compelling!! I just kept turning up the audio louder and louder

@@Jeremy9697 For starters ... a 747 can fly with 1 out of 4 engines ... so even if 3 failed you are still not falling like a rock. And no, they dont fall out of the sky, there are many cases of planes landing without power specially if they were high enough when they lost the engines. And even a bad landing on a plane with no power, is still more survivable than a Starship with some engine trouble. And leave alone the fact that you can actually troubleshoot the problem ... while on Starship its seconds away from disaster. I doubt they will ever clear the skydiver maneuver to be performed with humans onboard. The good thing is that Starship is such a great cargo hauler, that this is not very relevant ... It will still change space travel even if no Starship carries any Human ... or even if none of them go to Mars with Humans onboard.
@@Coyote27981 they barely glide bud... yes they can go further the higher up they are because that's how falling works lol you do realize rockets have more engines that planes right!?
Wait a second… Starship needs to land 100 time to be human rated… How many launches for the others? 100 launches as well? Or is it a different standard
No, Eric Berger was just saying HE will be comfortable flying in it once it has a hundred successful launches (and landings). The process for human flight rating is complex and very specific, but it does not require any particular number of launches. There is a minimum, but it's closer to three or four missions. Look at how quickly Crew Dragon became human-rated: I think it took just two successful test-flight missions because Cargo Dragon had already proven many of its flight characteristics. Heck, Starliner itself had ONE uncrewed test flight (which didn't go well, but didn't end in a RUD), then went straight to ONE crewed test flight (which left its two test pilots behind on the ISS while it did an uncrewed re-entry to make sure it didn't end in a RUD either). If Starliner has just one more crewed test flight that goes really well, it will be approved for commercial and government human spaceflight. But each "not so great" test flight postpones the crew certification to require another launch... and another... until they get everything right.
Pretty sure it will be a different standard than typical as there is no capsule ejection system on starship for crew in case of launch anomalies.not sure why spacex didn't incorporate a detachable pod on nosecone of starship for this reason, they clearly must have an agreed pathway with NASSA and FAA for human rating. My guess is it would be many more successful launches than systems with abort capabilities. But I'm just guessing and no expert just an interested observer
@@chrisnolan8146 it’s an interesting point. Making the crew compartment separable would certainly add mass. But the question would be, how much would be the minimum. Super Draco’s to get away, and parachute to ‘land’
Great interview Ellie! I remember back in the 50's they were projecting manned missions to Mars by the 1980's. So much for those optimistic prognostications. Rocket science is really rocket science and very difficult to do.
No, BO is legit, really... the weirdness is that they suck in funding and they build facilities as if they are a major player in the orbital launch industry, but they release products like they are a competent but medium-size aerospace subcontractor... Blue Alchemist is ready to go but waiting for a major player to fly it to the Moon and put it to work. The BE-3 and BE-4 rocket engines are excellent, now that they are operational, and are used by the Vulcan rocket.
The single most important thing SpaceX does for the industry, is showing that building stuff that works, is the goal and the dream and a successful future.
25 minutes and 36 seconds of sheer joy. I'd already promised to buy...have Liftoff arriving tomorrow. Bit miffed to have to wait (UK) till almost the end of October for Reentry. It'll be nice to read during my 6 months in Cornwall from November 1st. Thank you Ellie. Wilbo
We have to keep in mind that Boeing Space division is a major player in keeping ISS operational and was a major player in the Space Shuttle program. If they fix their management, they could compete with SpaceX. But until then, SpaceX will keep leading the industry. 😊Progress happens with risk and innovation, insight and dedication, and the will to succeed.
@keepernod2888 just compete in what they claim they do (but have yet to prove)...launch cargo and astronauts to ISS. I doubt they have any interest in colonizing the moon or Mars except as an overpaid NASA subcontractor as they've always been! They can't even come anywhere close to competing with starlink or any other EM endeavor.
Ellie, you are spot-on! Little people who are afraid of being bold and daring, will always be out there. Ignore them because they will never lead to success.
I find it funny the BO fanboy writes books about SpaceX yet wishes they would change leadership because he personally does not like Musk. This is the sort of thinking that has kept the USA from doing any manned missions other than SpaceX. So funny for him to talk out of both sides of his mouth on this. He really needs to stay out of the politics if he wants to write more SpaceX books.
I'm no Elon Musk, but I never ever regretted my failures. Knowing with certainty that a given path of endeavor will not work is worth its weight in gold. Too many people learn nothing at all from failure. Those people never succeed at anything important.

(9:01) Eric - "This is not the person we want extending life into space..." Sorry, if Elon were not so committed to what's real in rocketry, SpaceX would not have gone as far as it has, and his personality is exactly the kind of person needed to pursue Mars and beyond. Superb interview - revealing and looks like an interesting book.
100 Starship flights sounds like a lot, but they're aiming for a 90 minute turnaround. Indeed just to get refilling done they need quick turnaround. It's not impossible that they could do a thousand launches in a year. They're doing over 100 launches a year with F9 and expendable upper stages. So human rating will come quickly after full reusability, assuming that they're not cratering all the time. F9 is already completely obsolete. Even with an expendable upper stage. Starship lifts 10 times more Starlink than F9 and just the range costs of 10 F9 launches is 10 million dollars, let alone the cost of 10 F9 upper stages.
Artemis is fundamentally different to Apollo as a business model and people seem to miss that SpaceX IS part of the Artemis program and that its not just the SLS and Boeing and Lockheed. It will have a saga of different launch vehicle families and spacecraft generations throughout the years/hopefully decades. The SLS and the Orion hardware will fly some missions since they are more ready than SpaceX for the time but It wont be like Apollo where everything was just exclusive to the Saturn and the Apollo hardware. It will be different chapters of hardware adapting with time to prolong the life of the program. This is part of why Apollo was so easy for the government to shut down. One could imagine that by Artemis 17 or some long off mission that the SLS days will look ancient and the Starship era will be a main vehicle but even it will be replaced, other launch vehicles and hardware will show up by then that haven't even been invented yet. Flexibility is the point. The old days of space travel from one program to another only had one "brand" of hardware to do anything with and they want to change that. It had a lot to do with Apollo's demise -and the Shuttle. It takes a lot of time to reinvent everything from one mission to the next.
When I was young with a skull full of mush, I was a liberal. After becoming an engineer, where I like it when things make logical sense, I became a conservative. If you want sustainable policy that doesn't harm the future, and slow the progress of mankind, conservatism is it. Liberalism today makes little sense and seems to be all about groups wanting to steal our earned money because they somehow feel "entitled" to it. Well, no. It is sad though in a way. I could talk to liberals in the 1990s and try to come to some understanding with them, but those days are long gone.
NSF is another organization with the same behavior, with their latest pro-FAA video. And they're actively deleting posts and blocking people who point it out.
Yup, its not too hard to figure out who Eric votes for, he's obviously brainwashed and indoctrinated by mainstream corporate media. I learned early in covid to never trust the media or government and so I got rid of my TV and now get my news from independent UA-camrs, not billion dollar corporate media. Youre right, its sad that he'll criticize SpaceX while making boatloads of money off their back.
I disagree: the Biden Administration and its allies on the Left used to love Elon, but that changed when Elon stood up for free speech and bought Twitter. The best way for Elon to move his Mars vision is to actually have an Administration that is sympathetic to what he’s trying to do, so it makes perfect sense that he supports Trump. SpaceX is on the cutting edge of space technology, consistently doing what most in the industry says that it’s impossible. The FAA is crippling SpaceX to move at the speed of SpaceX. They can build several rockets and dozens of extra motors before the FAA gives them approval and that should not actually happen. FAA has a job, but they need to do it better and faster so it does not cripple our space program like they have been doing. FAA needs new young fresh blood does not cripple or lead in rocket technology.
Well put together program. More than a simple interview. You really do tell the story in the title, "Where would the space industry be without SpaceX?" Thank you!
I don't hear any criticism of Jeff Bezos buying the Washington Post. I still use Amazon. Whether or not Starship lands safely has nothing to do with flight safety. Vertical landings of the launch vehicle is just a great bonus. A good point though is there's only one Elon Musk!

I was gonna say we'd still be begging for rides to the ISS, but I hadn't considered what Eric said - that we might have abandoned the ISS altogether. Other consequences include: 1) Europe is still dominant in global commercial launch 2) America still has approximately 0% of global commercial launch 3) China is by far the world's dominant space power 4) Ukraine would no longer exist as a country.
And they didn't/don't have the culture or talent to accomplish such a difficult task.
Eric, we need space travel to no longer be a political football, but just another thriving industry.
Then people need to stop worrying about what Elon's political preference is...
A thing to remember is Elon’s sense of humor can be a little warped, not everything he says is serious

He is the meme lord

@@peterwilson7532 Eh, he is socially awkward and is probably on the spectrum. Crude jokes are just a reflection of an inability, not a desire to stoke fires.

Government can't lead it self out of a paper bag. This other "Eric" guy is wrong about they should be in control.

Anyone who thinks that Elon Musk isn't an absolute genius and his companies are in a League of their own
has never started a company and scaled it to millions much less billions of dollars
Why would Eric bring up Elon's political views if he didn't care about them?
He's another mentally fragile establishment indoctrinated dude. (his prior book is recommended by ME anyway)
The point wasn't Elon's politics, it was that overtly announcing his politics was slowing down his progress be creating opposition in the political bodies that grant the approvals he needs to launch. To avoid that, he would need to be politically neutral. *shrugs* but yeah, by being vocally partisan as an individual he's shooting SpaceX in the foot as a corporation. And that would still be true if he were a Democrat.

"Starship has no emergency escape system"
And neither does a 747. We're going to have to move past that realization.
The thing about airplanes, if the engines fail they become gliders, but Rocket ships become projectiles.
@alkimball8920 man oh how wrong you are. Any large commercial plane can not glide like you think. No engines they will literally fall out of the sky
@@Jeremy9697tell that to the "Gimli glider" pilots..
Read Lift-Off shortly after it was released. Very well written in my opinion. Already preordered Reentry, looking forward to reading it.
Wait a second…
Starship needs to land 100 time to be human rated…
How many launches for the others?
This is an very interesting Video about the success of Spacex and an important Book over Spacex. Seven from Sweden
BO has accomplished nothing but a joyride in 20 years. I’m shocked when people think they’re a space company.
Compete in what area?
@keepernod2888 just compete in what they claim they do (but have yet to prove)...launch cargo and astronauts to ISS. I doubt they have any interest in colonizing the moon or Mars except as an overpaid NASA subcontractor as they've always been! They can't even come anywhere close to competing with starlink or any other EM endeavor.
Ellie, you are spot-on!
Little people who are afraid of being bold and daring, will always be out there. Ignore them because they will never lead to success.
Elon is unique, and his behavior is his own business. Each of us is an individual with his own opinions and that's his right.
I bet that baby X will be the next taking the company forward

Most driven people are a bit mad to begin with. However, they get shit done!
Excellent interview, Ellie. Eric's book series sound like they would be great.
Obviously, Eric is a liberal and keeps criticizing Elon Musk for his politics but writes books about and lives off SpaceX's success of the past. SAD!

Eric is actually able to recognize what a great entrepreneur Elon Musk is, but he dare criticizing his politics. That is the opposite of SAD!

If Trump wins, arguably the path to Mars is escalated, compared to if Trump loses.

FAA needs new young fresh blood does not cripple or lead in rocket technology.

why do we have to fear our tongue? If you believe we should you have already accepted what Harris wants to do as president.. biden has already started the socialism and harris will continue it if you believe somebody can't say what they want to say
I think he wanted to maintain political neutrality but a combination of fighting with California State government and then the purchase of Twitter the left really went after him as the enemy. That has really cut the benefits of neutrality as a business owner out from him.
We would still be using Soyuz to transport astronauts to space and no reusable rockets.
I agree with Elon on more then just space. As a YTer that's all I will say.
Great show, a short story in itself which hopefully gets more people informed and interested.
The 50-year lag was not good for the USA in so many ways.
Ordered Ellie! Thanx!!!
Hope you like it!
Glad he finally admits we never went to the Moon
I was gonna say we'd still be begging for rides to the ISS, but I hadn't considered what Eric said - that we might have abandoned the ISS altogether.
Other consequences include:
1) Europe is still dominant in global commercial launch
2) America still has approximately 0% of global commercial launch
3) China is by far the world's dominant space power
4) Ukraine would no longer exist as a country. Without working communications, they would have fallen in the first couple of months of the Russian invasion.
Ellie, you are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Well done!
Wow, thank you!
Eric, we do not care if you personally like Elon Musk's opinions or not. We care about his products and the future he's building.
Elon is a champion of commercial space, exploration, and champion of free speech!
especially this time we have a Russia scientist passing his President, bringing their skill came to USA , he with U S Team, stay 18 months brought his own last mission in Russia, came over stayed with USA team, trained Computer and experience , trained together, correct last time mistakes, made all like daily life. We all owe Elon all these times, what did we do to he and his family.
The reason Elon is such a driving force is because he truly does not care, because him sharing his outlook isn't going to change anything in his life. Elon gives you what he gets from his mind, it is what it is. At the end of the day politics is cancer
crew dragon the only US space craft that will bring more astronauts from space than to space. I know that the Soyuz did it as well, but that was the same type of craft that brought them back not another manufacturer
I did preorder this book. I enjoyed the last one
Couldn't agree more. Please keep it up
