My comment is gonna get buried after 6 months, but hey. I wanted to add something about Kiryu's fighting styles : In all the Yakuza games but especially in 0, Kiryu is a pure product of japanese fighting / martial arts culture. Japan has a huge love for fighting and a big martial arts culture, with the biggest and most widespread being karate, judo, boxing, kickboxing (and by extension muay thai), and you can add pro wrestling too as it is absolutely MASSIVE in Japan and a lot of wrestlers have transitioned into MMA starting in the 80's with Satoru Sayama, culminating with Pancrase in the 90's. On top of that, japanese media has created a sort "delinquent" fighting style, with big swings / power punches and inspiration from pro wrestling, a screen only fighting style that you can easily see in movies like Crows Zero, Demekin, Elite Yankee, etc. It's associated with young delinquents, which themselves are more associated with the 1980's. Kiryu's fighting styles are basically based on this. In 0, Kiryu can choose between 4 styles, the last one being a combination of the previous 3. You have the BRAWLER style which is, coherently with the character's young age in 0, based on the delinquent / "yankee" fighting style seen in movies, all about big swings / soccer kicks / big push kicks and dirty judo style throws ; the RUSH style which is based on boxing and kickboxing with some muay thai style kicks for the power moves, the BEAST style which is an all strength style and based on pro wrestling, particularly the japanese "Strong Style". The last style, DRAGON or LEGEND, is a combination of all of them : you have punches from boxing, kicks that are more karate like (with, like noted in the video, proper chamberings and good form), throws that are inspired by both judo (osotogaris !) and pro wrestling ; all wrapped into a brutal, street-fighting looking style. It's very interesting how coherent these styles are related to the character. Chronologically, Yakuza 0 is about Kiryu's youth, but is the sixth game in the franchise ; and the Dragon / Legend style had been so far Kiryu's style for the previous fifth. In the context of 0, with how inexperienced he is compared to the other games, it makes sense that he would have a unrefined style, then learn proper stuff, to end up combining everything. It makes a lot more sense too considering Toshihiro Nagoshi, Yakuza's creator, wanted to make a 100% japanese game and wasn't looking to export it. The way Kiryu fights is completely coherent with that. Even more when in the first game, he gets lessons by a master of traditional arts. The fighting styles are one of my favourite things about this franchise.
I usually avoid walls of texts but this is a very good analysis of Kiryu. Outside of this context, or outiside of having played 0 for that matter, Kiryu is ridiculous.
@@captainnavi6546 Y:LAD is one of the best in the franchise. I miss the brawler gameplay but they made something really good with the turn based, one of the most fun TB rpgs I've played. I do hope they will combine the two in the future, in the style of FFVIIR, it's the best of both worlds.

I think Yakuza 0 has the best Kiryu (partially because it's my first game but still). His personality works much better as a new and slightly naive chimpira who's just followed his father figure into the underworld than the experienced gangster who's worked with the Yakuza numerous times and should probably know better at that point.
@@lukeskywalker987 AGREED!!! i found him unlikable in kiwami :( he was both too heroic and also downright stupid (hitting a child? tf lol). 0 kiryu is naively optimistic but determined and his resolve to do things how he feels is right is so admirable. 0 was a masterpiece wasted by shitty games around it in the franchise.
8:11 I can’t believe they missed/didn’t react to Kiryu’s ultimate heat action in the Dragon of Dojima fight style, would have love to see their take on it.
Martial Artists react to Judgment, it's a Yakuza spinoff but it's more Kung fu elements. You could've have them reacted to Majima too cause he has more martial arts moves and heat actions.

One thing that I would've been interested in but what wasn't touched on here due to no scenes where it really shows in-game is what they think of the fights when considering that Kiryu is basically a fucking giant. Jesus christ why is he so tall Edit: It's also implied several times that Kiryu basically has the strength of prime time Mike Tyson behind them punches. Basically he's a monster.

Most people only really know 0, Kiwami 1 and Kiwami 2. SEGA really needs to bring Yakuza Collection to other platforms so people will be more aware of the other characters.
Saejima's fighting style is so fun! You punch guys so hard they literally BOUNCE off the pavement and then you can grab them, mid-air, and then swing and smash them like Thor swings Loki in the first Avengers movie. I also really liked Akiyama's fighting style being 100% kick-based and aerial manipulation. He's literally hovering in the 5th game it gets so ridiculous. Although I enjoyed the others, I wasn't as big of a fan of Tanimura, Shinada, or Yagami's fight styles compared to the rest. Also Haruka's battles are an okay minigame. There's an alternate reality where they made her actually fight street thugs like ua-cam.com/video/RV9RrdIUpTI/v-deo.html
I wanna see their reaction to the "Pliers" heat move. It's always stuck with me, and if you've seen it you'll know what I mean. If you don't know what I mean, and you have Yakuza 0, you can find it in the empty square beside the Kamurucho temple. There's often randomly generated events happening there, so pay attention to the ground there when in Brawler style.
"if you have 15 guys in a fight your gonna be overwhelmed" Well don't you worry, the charismatic autobiography's got your back! Now you can be overwhelmed by just TWO guys
Honestly having that item on explains why you couldn't fight that many people in real life lol It makes your enemies attack all the time instead of patiently waiting their turn, which is how you would get overwhelmed
Charismatic autobiography is probably harder and more frustrating than any Dark Souls games lol. Makes me wonder, is there anyone crazy enough to try and beat the game not only on Hard/Legend, but with the autobiography on? I think that's pretty much impossible in any fight with more than two guys, especially with those thugs with the fast fighting style that always knocks you down on the third punch.
Would've loved to see their reactions to a couple more heat moves. Particularly Kiryu ripping a guy's arms out of their sockets and Majima catching a sword with his teeth.
I love this duo when they review martial arts fights in the games, and she’s equally iconic with Noah since the moment I’ve watched her react to fighting games on Mortal Kombat, Tekken, etc.
Yakuza kiwami 2 has an improved engine and moves are much more fluid, they could also check out Judgement. Would've also loved to see the styles broken down and discussed.
I love how they point out his suit never getting blood on it, I never really noticed it. Also curious how they react to one of Ryuji's goons hitting Kiryu with a glass bottle and he doesn't even get affected by it. I want a doctor to react to that too, Kiryu must be some god for that to be a thing.
@@CronyneWARE I guess like a heavy hit but like a champagne glass bottle? I feel like that would crack your head open or even leave a cut at least. I have seen I think it was Russian soldiers who could take a punch in the gut and a kick and they don't even feel it but I feel like a glass object hitting you in the head would be harder to just take in and not get fucked. Could be wrong though would love to see that if it's possible.
@@popo0129 It could well be possible. Mind you they're ABSOLUTELY insane, but shaolin monks are known for doing things like bashing their heads on a rock over the course of a few years to harden their skull. Or continuously injuring their skin to the point where they can resist stabs.
We need a part 2. With Majima's moves, but also all of the revelations (Learning Rush, Beast, Slugger, and Breaker cutscene). Also the essence of relentless barrage, essence of torment, ultimate essence 88 (they missed it in this one), essence of wall smashing, etc.
I'm glad they talked about the Legend version of the double drop kick. For those who don't know, the Legend fighting style is Kiryu's moveset in the future, showing he's got the drop kick mastered compared to the regular one seen earlier where he falls to the ground.
Lemme explain how Kiryu fights. Brawler Style:Is balanced between strength and speed, it can pick up things as weapons, but not too heavy. Rush Style: Can't pick things up and use weapons, but hits real fricken fast and I think has the fastest heat gain. Beast Style: Hits like a speeding bulldozer and can use WAY heavier things as weapons, but is slow. DRAGON OF DOJIMA STYLE: This is Kiryu's signature style(as in he didn't find inspiration) and combines things from the other styles to create a fluid, hard-hitting, speedball of a style.
Wrong Blue Dino Ranger!....yeah thats a specific critque, but dont do Yoshi like that. Favorite move is definitely the dropkick out the window. Very extra.

He’s a big teddy bear just don’t piss him off
I think Yakuza 0 has the best Kiryu (partially because it's my first game but still). His personality works much better as a new and slightly naive chimpira who's just followed his father figure into the underworld than the experienced gangster who's worked with the Yakuza numerous times and should probably know better at that point.
He’s a teddy bear with the heart of a grizzly bear.
4 and 5 too. I want them to see them to react to Akiyama, Saejima, Tanimura and Shimada.

I love how they eventually just got onboard with the concept that Kiryu is... Well he's basically not a human being considering how fucking strong he is. One thing that I would've been interested in but what wasn't touched on here due to no scenes where it really shows in-game is what they think of the fights when considering that Kiryu is basically a fucking giant.
Jesus christ why is he so tall
Edit: It's also implied several times that Kiryu basically has the strength of prime time Mike Tyson behind them punches. Basically he's a monster.
He's 6ft tall, but somehow, in Japan in 1988 everyone is not much shorter than him.
De Khain didn’t he punch a tiger 5 Meters into the sky?
Dude's a shaved bear. Hell, he fistfought a killer bear and won. And he wasn't the only one doing it in the series.

We need part 2 for majima´s moves.
And more quick time events from the boss fights.
Man, I know this is just Yakuza 0 but everyone forgets about Best Boy Akiyama, Tanimura, Saejima and even Shinada, from the later entries.
Most people only really know 0, Kiwami 1 and Kiwami 2. SEGA really needs to bring Yakuza Collection to other platforms so people will be more aware of the other characters.
Yeah I've been playing all of the games blind. Have loved all of these characters fighting styles.
Can’t forget Yagami either
Im playing the 4th game now and started saejima yesterday. (I’m not out of the prison yet) but for now I’m not a fan of his slow but heavy attacks

If you don't know what I mean, and you have Yakuza 0, you can find it in the empty square beside the Kamurucho temple. There's often randomly generated events happening there, so pay attention to the ground there when in Brawler style.
7:21 ah, I see you know the secret Joestar family technique
4:02 “OHHH MAAI GOD” Is that the old man?
"if you have 15 guys in a fight your gonna be overwhelmed"
Well don't you worry, the charismatic autobiography's got your back! Now you can be overwhelmed by just TWO guys
there's easy, normal, and hard difficulties, and then there's Charismatic Autobiography difficulty
Honestly having that item on explains why you couldn't fight that many people in real life lol It makes your enemies attack all the time instead of patiently waiting their turn, which is how you would get overwhelmed
@@GeeGe. Pretty much. Even the Yakuza that watched Yakuza gameplay said the same thing too: Dude would die to that many guys.
Wait is charismatic autobiography the reason I was always fighting like 20 people in the street fights on hard difficulty

In theory you could get FUCKING strong against incoming attacks, if you've ever gone and checked out how insane shaolin monks are.
@@CronyneWARE I guess like a heavy hit but like a champagne glass bottle? I feel like that would crack your head open or even leave a cut at least.

Been waiting for this
Lemme explain how Kiryu fights.
DRAGON OF DOJIMA STYLE: This is Kiryu's signature style(as in he didn't find inspiration) and combines things from the other styles to create a fluid, hard-hitting, speedball of a style.
damn, i was hoping to see them react to Majima and his weird styles, like the Breaker and Slugger styles
