Fun fact: Sifu is entirely built on a lesser-known style of Chinese kung fu called Pak Mei. Similar to Wing Chun, also a Southern style of kung fu, but with much more movement. There's videos of the the guy who did the Sifu mocap everywhere.

It's a bit of a shame, that people mostly see Wing Chun, while styles like Hung Gar have more similarities and also use most of the techniques known from Wing Chun, but with more versatile footwork like seen in Pak Mei. But well.. after the 1970's and 80's Shaw Brother's movies not many movies were made showing styles like Hung Gar, but what feels like 10+ IP Man movies and others promoting Wing Chun. Would be nice to see more movies showing different styles of Kung Fu in a as realistic as possible way.

The devs actually worked with a french master of Pak Mei Kung Fu (sometimes also spelled Bak Mei) , in order to create the moves.
The guy studied the fighting style in China for several years under the leading grandmaster and was officially certified as an instructor.
The idea was to use as many legit techniques for the game as possible and they did lots of mo-cap with said master.

Notice how these two are critiquing the punches...it's because the devs asked him to slightly change which they as "martial artist" easily can see

I liked how much Noah explained stuff in here. Hadn't seen the three-section-staff boss battle of this game yet, but the movements were *really* cool to watch. Gemma kinda blew out my ears with her awestruckness at it :P But that interest in the choreography is cool to see.
I wonder what they'd think of games like God Hand or Kya: Dark Lineage. God Hand definitely would have more interesting stuff on offer considering that game is ALL combat, and has about 100 collectable and customizable combos with quite a large enemy variety, each with their own movesets-- even if they do look similar.
Stuff like mule kicks, haymakers, hooks, grabs and grab escapes, even buttshoves and groin strikes... God Hand's got it all.
But Kya's still interesting, even if it doesn't have as much on offer. It's a 3D platformer with an art direction like Rayman but a Fighter-like combat system, and unlockable moves range from spinkicks to double salto kicks, to punches that can become big uppercuts, to side grabs where Kya grabs the opponent's left arm with her own left arm past her face, kicks them in the knee with her right leg and then elbows them in the ribs.
God Hand would probably be better for coverage, but i do want to spread awareness on Kya. It's a solid game.
All that said, looking forward to the next episode, whatever it might be!
Also i'd rather not get facekicked by *anyone*, thank you very much.

God Hand is definitely one of my favourite games of all time, I still have a copy to this day. The unique approach to building your own combos, demonstrating a steep but rewarding learning curve where you basically get to experience the game get more, and more intense the better you play - and easier if you're playing poorly.
The bosses in God Hand are definitely fun, too. So unique, and a lot of fun to fight - the music to them is great, too. I honestly think there's a lot there that really shows how good Platinum Studios (back then known as Clover) really was, and how much they're still banging out the hits.
The only downside is that I can't say certain things would fly as well as they did back then. I imagine they both would object to the depiction of Gene spanking female enemies as a special move, or the depiction of extremely effeminate, stereotypical gay dudes as a sub-boss.
That said, the game is *extremely* fast-paced at certain points, which is definitely another thing that makes it hard to master, but rewarding when you do.

One thing I'd love to see them zero in on: in this game and so many others, when you ground-and-pound an enemy, you only land a couple of hits _and then pick them back up._ Obviously part of that's just game balance so that you can't stay on top of an enemy and guarantee a KO, but I don't know a lot about ground game in general so I'd love to find out if there's something I'm missing.
Also, the best thing about Kuroki's three-section staff compared to other 'soft weapon' users like Kratos, is they really nailed _which moves flow into each other,_ and which frames are the 'catch' frames that allow the user to change direction. The momentum never seems to appear or disappear unnaturally.

The fighting style in Sifu is called Pak Mei, also spelled Bak Mei. Like wing chun, it's a southern kung fu style, so there's more focus on hand techniques and low kicks. Sloclap chose Pak Mei specifically because they wanted a kung Fu style that still looks really flashy but could theoretically be applied in a real life situation.

What personally makes me like Wing Chun isn't just the fact that it was made by a woman but the story behind it that her husband was physically abusive and one day she got tired of it turned her coat rack into the first dummy for Wing Chun and showed her husband that she will no longer be bullied around by him or any man ever again.

Why do ppl have to turn every female success story into a war of the sexes? Wing Chun was created by Ng Mui, a Shaolin nun in Qing dynasty China. Her being in Shaolin explains her martial arts foundations, you can't just create a new martial art form without any prior foundation, and her being a nun means she didn't have a husband, so your story is total bullcrap sounds like made up to stir up antagonization between the sexes.

This is the first time I've seen Sifu gameplay. The enemy's reaction to the strikes are really impactful and make hitting feel good, but it does seems a little over the top that your character barely notices their strikes in return.
I counted at least six times in the last fight that someone head or arms or whatever should have gone flying from a direct impact with the blade, and the player character just sorta flinches instead, as if a six year old punched them.

So some personal guesses on the martial arts used in Sifu
The main Character and Yang use a style of kung-fu called Pak Mei which is fairly similar in appearance to Wing Chun
I think Fajar uses a form of Silat in tandem with his plant manipulation. His fighting style has a mix of kicks and punches combined with elbow/knee strikes and sweeps which is fairly similar to some styles of Silat
Sean and his disciples use Bajiquan, no question
Kuroki, I’m honestly not sure. She uses Kunai and a bladed 3 section staff but aside from Shurikenjutsu (a Japanese martial art based on throwing weapons) I’m not sure what martial arts she uses
Jingfeng primarily uses a meteor hammer and I’m pretty sure she uses Shaolin style kung fu, but keep in mind this is a guess from someone who doesn’t practice any style of Kung Fu
The Flashkick enemies seem to use some sort of Taekwondo esque style on account of the heavy use of flashy kicks and non fist strikes (in addition to the stance they use with their hands being low)
The bodyguard are kind of a weird case, they seem to use a super rudimentary form of mma. They have takedowns, punches, kicks, and knee strikes from a clinch. However they lack the submissions from mma and their groundwork mostly consists of hammer fists to the head.
