Innocent defendants would see having to be put on trial as an inconvenience, so they would comply and cooperate to the best of the defendant's ability so the trial can be done and over with and everyone could move on. Guilty defendants see the trial as a threat, so they find every avenue they can to portray themselves as being victimized by the "system."

Regarding this tendency of politicians to say whatever people want to hear, going as far as contradicting itself hoping people won't notice or get offended, I must say we get what we deserve. I live in Canada and I saw many more politicians suffering political death from telling the inconvenient truth than the reverse proposition. We do get the politicians we deserve. I might add that the US political system is far worse because of the actual and perfectly legal possibility for billionaires to buy themselves a politician or even better, a whole team of them.

I agree he will not testify. If he does, that will give the prosecution a chance to ask him questions he doesn't want to talk about. He is too much of a coward and smart enough to avoid that. Funny in the past I've heard Trump say he wants his day in court so he can present the evidence to prove his innocence. Well he has it and what does he do? Goes on social media and starts ranting and not looking good. A better look would be to calm and let the evidence speak for itself. I also remember him saying only guilty people take the fifth yet he has taken it on multiple occasions.

Once you take the stand, you are just like every other witness. You can be accused of lying if the other side can prove that you are.
I’m pretty sure you can. I think that’s why we’ve seen plenty of “I don’t recall” answers from various people at times when you’d expect them to have remembered certain damning things. You can prove someone had lied but it’s much more difficult to prove someone does remember something.
If T was as intelligent as he claims, the US and it’s justice system would have far bigger problems with him than they do at the moment. He’s not very clever but he’s highly skilled nonetheless. He cultivated an environment very early on that planted seeds in the minds of his followers that the press, media, Govt, justice system and elections couldn’t be trusted. They trusted him because of the persona he’d created for himself of being a business genius on TV. Now, his followers fall into two distinct camps - those that continue to hang off his every word because they’ve been told that he’s the only one they can believe - the second group are those that know that somethings not right, but they stick with him because they will lose face or lose politically if they started to question him. T’s failing is that he’s not as smart as he thinks he is and that’s the one and only reason he won’t testify. He and his lawyers know that is the one thing that can bring him down.
