I started Square Dancing when I was 10, The Teacher was a lady named Gwen Manning about a year later I went to a dance At RAF Alconberry The Caller Was Tommy Cavanagh it was sooo much Fun.
Tommy Gave me 3 Records And told me to memorise them, Three weeks Later he called me to the stage, I muddled thru Those 3 tunes and from then on I was hooked.
Last night I went to San Antonio and all those wonderful Memories came Back. I Danced and called Square Dances all over the place for over 60 years and felt wonderful. This Brought back all those fabulous memories.

I danced with Larry's square dance club in Hawthorne, CA. in late 1950-1960's We actually traveled and were on television. I wish they had VCR's then. He was an amazing caller and my dresses were beautiful. We all had the same dresses and petticoats and the boys had the same shirts and pants. We were magical.

I started square dancing in 2000 and danced with my club until about 2009 or so when our numbers went down so low we couldn’t pay a caller and rent the hall anymore. I miss it so much!

Square dancing is so much fun! People who haven't tried it just don't know. Give it a try. So many men who finally give in to their wives and try it, say that they wish they had done it much sooner! I miss it!

This is a fascinating video. I was just curious about square dancing and decided to look at a short video, but found this rich treatment of the history of square dancing, and one of its leaders, very compelling. It's a well made video that makes a compelling case for the return of square dancing and related arts to our schools.

Really interesting..Thank you so much! The same thing happened here in Australia. Back in the 70's and 80's I called square dances to filled halls for organisations as fund raisers etc. but it rarely happens now. However, I'm now busy calling dances for students at school camps, comprising perhaps one dance in squares and the rest in lines and big circles which I have mostly made up.To get around the "touching ' problem, I always start with my " Duck Dance" in lines and only progress to elbow swings when I reckon they're ready! As Larry says , you can tell!... Look on you tube if interested.Success of this format depends on being entertaining, dim lighting, wrapped candies "duck food!" for rewards, and ability to vary the speed by playing my own music on guitar. It's exciting fun for ALL, but unfortunately probably doesn't do much for the future of square dancing...These kids return home to their electronics and life without human contact....SAD!

I started dancing to Duke Miller in Peterborough, NH, in the 1950s and learned the traditional method. Now am relearning the "modern" method and enjoying it!

Sometimes its fun to dip into a world you know nothing about. Square dancing isn't for me but its fascinating all the same.

Check out callerlab.org for info on callers. Also, you probably should learn to square dance - it's a time commitment. Check out wheresthedance.com and dosado.com.

@@justinchambers2306 So, a decade later, I gotta ask: How'd it turn out? Did you wind up becoming a legendary square dance caller?
How hard core badass would that be!?!
That would RULE if we had a documented timeline of your progression from simple UA-cam commenter with a vague sense of what you want to accomplish in the square dancimg arts to timeless name recognition as a legend up on the Mt Rushmore of the exclusive Caller community...
      So.. Whats your deal?
      Which way did you go?
Are you ready and willing to update us on the state of your tutelage or are you just dipping your toes testing the waters here with this comment section asking for resources, just "kicking the tires", while this man takes time outta his day to oblige you with resources that unlock the mysteries of Calling?
I have my suspicion as to the outcome but I am merely presuming to know what I believe to be the truth and until I get a reply from you I'll be perpetually compelled to ponder on this subject..
      😮‍💨🥴😵‍💫😟😲😳🥺😱😫

I love calling myself, but as vulgar and profane as possible.
