From this comprehensive guide, you'll get an understanding of a good SAT essay score, SAT essay format, SAT essay examples.
I realize, that most SAT students will be preparing for the essay during their last week of the prep. Perhaps, even during the last day. Let me know in the comments if you are. This video is created for YOU! 💌👏
After watching this video you will learn everything you need to know to create a decent essay. If you get creative, you may even get a perfect score.
Let’s begin talking about the placement of the essay in the exam. It’s last! It’s after an exhausting myriad of multiple-choice questions. Now you want me to be creative for the last 50 minutes? Right... No matter how intelligent you are, your cognitive power gets depleted and unless you’ve practiced writing the essay many times and it has become second nature ( which is obviously not our case here) you will struggle. You need a formula.
I’ll give it to you, so stay tuned until the end of the video.
✍️What the prompt?
Not a creative essay - good news. Nothing to create, no facts to recall. You will be asked to read a paragraph and analyze the author’s craft. This is different from what you usually do in school. This type of analysis is called - rhetorical. Make sure you know how to spell rhetorical. Thanks to Old English, there is an h there, after r. Don’t get me started.
Basically, in that passage, the author will be arguing a point. For example, Americans should reduce their use of AC, we should preserve natural darkness in the world, young people should get ample exposure to technology, American young people read less and that leads to negative consequences. Stuff like that. It doesn’t matter if you agree with the author or no. It’s immaterial because you are not expressing your opinion anyway. Your job is to read this paragraph like a literature professor and analyze its persuasive devices and how they make the argument more convincing. More on that later.
What’s important about this section is:
Do NOT express your opinion about the issue discussed,
Do NOT read the prompt. It will be the same.
How is it scored?
2 graders - objective - 3 categories (RAW)
Each category can give you 4 points from both graders - 8 is your max
8/8/8 is the absolute best here.
How should I spend my 50 minutes?
First, look at the end of the paragraph and spot the place where they give away the main argument. With that in mind, read through the passage, highlighting rhetorical devices.
My students often fall into two camps: Some find too many devices and can’t narrow it to 3 and others can’t find more than one or two. I will cover the main 10 devices later.

whole method is great but I'm little bit confused of the mnemonic devices. you mentioned rhetorical devices a separate mnemonic. isn't juxtaposition and all other mnemonics are rhetorical devices .
Guys , Im teling you , this aint even original , for people that are low on time , go on google and type college panda's SAT essay, its available online for free, she has literally copied everything from the booklet including the structure , format and even the examples

it’s a classic subscription model. You can go through the course in one month and get on of your essays reviewed. You can take longer and go back and revisit lectures. If you take 2 months, you’ll get two essays reviewed. However, it seems like you have so many doubts and reservations , maybe the course is not for you;) enjoy the free stuff!

I have my SAT next Saturday. I’ve practiced a lot for the general section and can consistently score above 1550 on the practice tests. Although, today is my first day looking into the essay part. Do you think it is possible to start practicing the essay part just six days before the test and get a score of 21 or above?

I had a doubt regarding IQWAR. In the video, you mentioned that we can use IQWAR once for a rhetorical device then QWAR again for the same rhetorical device. However, can WAR be the same information as it may be repetitive if I write the same WAR analysis again ?
Bharat Llakhotia hey, this is a FORMULA. It’s supposed to be consistent. If you want to break it up - do your thing ;) also, I discuss the template in a lot more detail in the course.

I’m not even lying. This is the best resource you can ever get. All I did was watch this video and look at some perfect score examples and I got 22/24 with a 1550 on my SAT. I only took it once and the sole credit for this high score on the essay is this video no cap!

Should we always say that the argument is convincing, or should we ever say that the argument is weak?
Neil Albuquerque, you can get your creativity going on the common app essay, for the SAT essay - please follow the prompt;) The prompt asks you to praise the writer instead of poking holes in his arguments. Make sure you say this in the intro: “The author puts forth a compelling argument for XXX. In doing so, he/she masterfully uses a set of rhetorical devices...” just use the template. The graders are looking for that.

we have to use war on rhetorical devices or on quoates because if we use on any above one of them then our one body paragrah(coz it consists only 7-8 lines ) complete so we cant use WAR on both(rhetorical device or quates).

Ms. Seberson, how does visceral imagery affect the writer and the argument? I am currently writing a practice SAT essay for Todd Davidson's article on America's national parks. He employs vivid imagery in the first few paragraphs which I know can affect the reader through appeals to emotion. However, I am not sure how to write how the device influences the writer or argument.
Edward, think about what your imagery does for the writer/argument/reader. Does it highlight that author has personal experience with the issue at hand? Does it ground the argument in reality? Is the argument now easier to understand as readers can vividly image the scenario in their mind’s eye?

I'm truly unsure as to how this imagery/rhetorical question affects the writer. As opposed to an anecdote that highlights the author's experience, the quote is less personal to the writer. Would it still be accurate to say that it builds the writer's credibility by demonstrating experience?
@@edwardxiao5527 I wouldn’t advise to talk about credibility here. He builds a vivid image to help readers create a visceral experience in their minds. It’s hard to say what the author’s intent was. This is outside of context for me, so I am unsure what to say.

Gamers of the galaxy. What you are referring to is hardly a concession, at least I am not reading it as one. An example of a concession is usually agreeing with an opposite view. “ I am well scare that many would disagree with my unpopular view because of XYZ.” - hope that helps;)
