My Staghorn Ferns were happily living on the coast of Southern CA just 7 blocks away from the beach. Not a climate exactly like the tropical rainforests these epiphytes are native to, but they were pretty dang happy. I left 2 of them behind with friends when I moved to Tucson last year & brought this 1 with me mainly because I wanted the vintage daisy pot circa 1950’s.

I’ve lived here a year now & so far so good when it comes to keeping this artsy plant alive. It’s not thriving by any means, but at least it’s looking mildly satisfied. The desert is even less like the tropics so keeping it going for the long haul is a stretch. I should say that mine is technically an elkhorn fern, which is also genus Platycerium, but they all get lumped together and called staghorn ferns. The care & growing conditions for them are the same.
I bought this plant at the Santa Barbara Farmers Market many moons past. My intentions were to mount it on a piece of driftwood to hang on my side fence but never got around to it. The last time it got repotted was 5 or 6 years ago so the time had come. Plus, I want the daisy pot for 1 of my houseplants!
Other reasons I wanted to repot this plant are: to better display it (the fronds were touching the ground & you couldn’t see its beauty), give it a proportionate home base, & to plant it in a mix more conducive to growing it in the desert. Now that I live in a hot, dry climate I’m thinking this fern has a much better chance in a pot than mounted on a piece of wood where it would dry out way too fast.
These epiphytic ferns don’t grow in the ground. You typically see them mounted on wood or growing in a moss basket. If you’re growing them in a pot like me, never use straight potting soil. The mix needs to drain really well yet be rich. In nature they get their nutrients from plant matter falling on them from above & whatever rain they’re getting just runs right off. The roots don’t like to stay water logged & a staghorn kept too wet will rot out.

Thank you for the information. A friend left stopped by one evening and dropped off a " piece " of a large one that was in someone's trash. I did not have the skills to mount it. so I put in the back of my garden where I gets bright shade. I am so glad to see a video that shows a potted fern. Now I can rescue my forgotten one and find a great pot for it. I am not knowledgeable on ferns so I appreciate the lesson about potting mixes! I live in Florida, so this will be right at home!
Nell..hello....So glad I ran across your video today. I have a Staghorn that I thought died years ago, but lo and behold it revived itself and is beautiful. It has been in the same pot "forever". To staghorn newbies... don't plant in a pot, plant in a basket. It will rot and not have enough airflow around its roots.
Hers is several years old and looks to be doing well.

i would have separated for that pot so you could lay flat, with the shied in the air it will continuously become heavier and need addressing sooner or later. just a thought from my experience...good work... i follow you
Nell I'm also from sf Bay Area, I thought the staghorn fern was difficult to grow, also I'd like to see how you painted the pot it looks great.
not particularly difficult, but they have unusual needs, and fertiliser can kill them. (a spoon full of compost, and a pinch of horn shavings will do)
in the wild they cling to tree trunks with those shield fronds, and form a bit of a funnel to cellect water and debris.
Which Bromeliads are you referring to in this video besides ballmoss or spanish moss? Pineapples and most other Bromeliads need soil to survive.

This is the first time that I have seen this fern planted like this instead of hanging up on a piece of wood. Nell, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, what would be the best way to grow this fern as far as this climate? Hanging or in a pot or does it matter? Love the way you have decorated and painted your plastic pots, it has inspired me to do with same. :)
Visit the outdoor botanical gardens in SF's Golden Gate Park to see some amazing *HUGE* staghorns growing right on trees! :) They of course get some professional care, but as far as climates go, they seem happy as a clam in that part of the city at least..

Hello my dear, I just recently found you and your videos. I’m disabled with my back after many (6) failed surgeries. I’ve always found outdoor gardening very satisfying but digging in the soil is very difficult for me now. Indoor plants I just love and is something that I get carried away with all the time. Ive been buying more plants that are out of my comfort levels. I recently purchased, lemon button fern, birds nest fern , and the” STAGHORN FERN “. I didn’t do my research on the species and how it has specific soil medium. I kinda freaked when I learned you have to mount them or make a special medium to mimic it growing in its natural growing conditions. I really have a simple question for you, but it’s a big problem for me. I received my Staghorn in a 4” inch container. What should I do with it. It doesn’t have a shield it looks just like a little fern. I would be most thankful for some feedback and maybe others, and myself with the same issue will from you.

Hey I think u have a ant 🐜 problem! Looks like a ton of ants came crawling out the old pot right after u depotted the fern. What do u do if That happens?
Those were gnats, not ants. Cause by too much moisture. Definitely an infestation!
Hi Nell. Thanks for this great video. I just bought one of these after watching your videos yesterday. I mounted mine onto wood but I'm debating on whether to put it on my covered patio or in the house. It gets over 100 degrees regularly in the summer (dry heat) and we get frost in the winter. It would be in bright shade and protected from frost. Do you think it will thrive outside with regular misting?
How often do you water them?
Mine has always been in a pot. I'd like to mount it instead. How would I go about it?

Stag and elkhorns are just ambiguous hobbyists names given to the species Platycerium. Not sure on the species. It’s fertile fronds look like willinckii. It’s beautiful!! You’ve done a killer job at looking after it 😍😍😍😍😍😍 let’s see an update!!!
