I always throw a bunch (like a whole bulbs' worth) of garlic cloves into the water to cook with the potatoes and mash them right in. Even people who aren't rabid garlic lovers like the flavor they impart.

Me too, I make my potatoes in the instant pot with a lots of garlic cloves and when it’s done I pour off a little water and then mash it all together in the pot! So easy and yummy.
I like to add fresh rosemary sprigs to the water along with garlic while the potatoes boil. It’s yum!
Every Thanksgiving I ask myself why I don't make mashed potatoes more often.. and then I don't make them again until next year.

I love that you use the potatoes with peels on. I prefer my mashed potatoes a little on the chunky side so the manual masher is the perfect tool. In addition, I roast a head of garlic and use that in the spuds. Finally, I save the cooking water to moisten the mash if needed and the rest to water houseplants.

*a tip for the dressing: place in pan by the heaping spoonfuls and bake most of the time covered, then uncover for last few mins to brown the top for crispy peaks of crunchy goodness! Inside will still be moist and soft.
if you aren't using the whole five pound bag of potatoes, you are doing it wrong. MORE POTATOES! :-)
My daughter and I are like the two of you. I don't even hit 5 feet and she is five five so that's a big difference for the two of us. I cannot live in my kitchen without my step stool I have more than one. Just a note: Tawney Port is a Portuguese wine from Porto, Portugal. Also, in Portugal we use a very common jam from Quince. It is yummy!!
I know that everyone recommends Yukon gold potatoes, but I don't like their flavor. I always use russets.
After avoiding russets for a while, I can't stand them now, give me red or yellow potatoes-which I hardly ever peel.

I have made the mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy in the past and loved it! Jane, you may-be should have let people know that potato segment is from a year ago because when I heard 42 people are coming my jaw dropped! But that was last year, whew.

Thank you Jane & Ann for the awesome recipes!! I made the mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy yesterday. My SAD husband loved them!! Especially the gravy. Today I’m making the stuffing and it’s in the oven now. It is a LOT of work for one woman to chop up all that stuff, but it sure smells like it’s going to be worth every minute. I’m not the world’s fastest chopper and it took me about 2 hours to get everything chopped up and ready to go. But, like I said, it sure smells like it’s worth it. Thanks again and I hope you and your families have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!
I made the cranberry salsa. It's really good! Will need to buy a lot of extra cranberries and freeze them so I can make this all year long!

My favorite kind of masher! :) I understand about leverage. I need to put my bowl in a chair to get the right leverage for me. Everything is high and I don't trust the step ladder because of balance problems.

I just made the Mommy's Mushroom Gravy last night and I was SO excited to find a delicious, WFPB gravy! I wanted to serve it over mashed potatoes but had no potatoes. My brilliant son suggested we cook a pan of hashbrowns and serve it with the gravy. It was AMAZING! Thanks for inspiring me through your videos to try this recipe!

Everything sounds delicious - the stuffing in a pumpkin, the mushroom gravy, I already make mash that way, peels and all, but I have always used garlic powder - i’ll use fresh next time... and OMGosh i’m looking forward to that Cranberry Salsa 🤩 I’ll serve that with lentil “meat” loaves and baked yams 🤩 Wow!! That’s a feast 🙏

I make the mushroom gravy all the time. I roast the mushrooms in the oven for about 20 mins first and also add a tsp of mushroom powder in the gravy to boost the umami. Sooo good!
What mushroom powder do you use?
@@waynesmith6351 Porcini Powder from Local Spicery in CA (order online) Other times I have ground my own with dried mushrooms I had in hand (shiitake Or porcini)

I am normally dairy free from allergies but i am struggling with gluten free with these recipes. Can you consider adding gluten free options for celeac or very gluten intolerant?
Just use substitutions for wheat/gluten products- gluten free flour in the gravy, gluten free bread in the dressing, etc

I'm making the potatoes and gravy for Thanksgiving. I'll add a whole bulb of roasted garlic. Did it by mistake last time and it was delicious! I have the cookbook signed by all three of you my daughter brought me from a conference!

WHAT CAN I USE INSTEAD OF NUTRITIONAL YEAST.. BECAUSE I HAVE CELIAC DISEASE AND CAN'T HAVE THE YEAST.
I don’t use nutritional yeast either! Usually I can just leave it out. I think I would add a vegan yogurt to take the place of it.

Cooking sherry usually has added salt. Drinkable sherry would give you the same sophisticated flavor without the added salt.
No booze in any of my recipes. I heard that not all the alcohol gets burned off plus it against my religion. Anyway, I missed what you did with the pumpkin you scooped out and replaced it with the stuffing. Did you make a pie, custard, or what? Please tell me.
Doesn't cutting up the potatoes allow all the vitamins to leach out and make them watery? I think cooking them whole is part of what healthy eating is about...faster is not always better for you. True Thanksgiving for health and calm and enjoying the process of cooking!

Or just cook your potatoes in cold water...bring them to a boil...boil 15 minutes...let them cool until you can take them out of the water by hand... and slice for egg or potato salad or cook 20 minutes then same/mash!
