    My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.

    FAQ:
    How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.
    What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
    You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
    Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
    What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGear...
    What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
    Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
    Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
    Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
    Do you make money off UA-cam? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
    I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
    I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jays...
    But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux

    I really like this office but l am excited to see the new one. The changes, in general, are so much more desired for me. I changed more than 10 homes in my whole life and just love to see new places and spaces. So - I was so so sure you will miss it (the crossing streets stuff) - waited for it and now happy to know you will do it more often. Thank you for this wonderful conversation (it was more like a monologue) but to me, it was like talking about these important things.

    That art behind you on the wall is beautiful...it has a very "oriental" feel which I LOVE! Just recently found you on You Tube. I love Paris...I've been twice. I'm currently learning French and your Vlogs about life in Paris are part of my "education" on everything Parisian. 🗼💗🙏

    Don’t hate me. I’ve stopped watching since you went weekly. Mainly because when you post weekly doesn’t work for me. I used to watch every morning first thing. I hope this helps because I’m being honest. It might be worth posting on a weekend because then people aren’t so busy.

    Looks cosy mate , and the coffee looks even better , love the painting of the girl behind you so I’ll have to find your book that no longer is for sale. Very charming place , I do hope everything works out for you , you seem to be a very nice young guy , but I love your vlogs that involve outside and when you talk about patrons it seems to sink in better if you know what I mean , anyhow keep up the great work , benefits of you leaving the office is that I’ll see more Paris and coffee , and you’ll get more patrons , keep we’ll it’ll all work for you .

    Hey Jay, just a thought when restaurants buy eggs they usually buy them in big squares that hold 36 eggs. Those squares can be used for dampening sound when hung on the wall and I think with a bit of spray paint and some artistic ability you could arrange them in the pattern of your space invader logo. I am sure local restaurants would give those egg trays away for free.

    Thanks for sharing your office experience with us. Glad it was a good thing for the time you had it and I'm glad you could make the best decision for you and your team even if it wasn't the funnest decision. A lofty dream of my own also involves an office type space, I'd love to own a building where artists could work, learn, collaborate and create for really cheap. Just dreams at this point but you never know! If you, (or anyone else), is looking for new, work friendly spaces, my roommate recently discovered Le Danube. It's kinda far, in the 19th (about a 15 minute walk from des Buttes-Chaumont) and yes, it's right by the Danube metro station. But if you're up for exploring more of Paris, it may be worth checking out. It's right in the middle of the cutest neighborhood. The coffee isn't cutting edge or anything but there is allot of space and the staff are extremely nice and have no problem with me working all day and using their free wifi! Good luck to you and your team in your future endeavors!

    Gotcha! Rue St Antoine, a block from my ex-hairdresser's. Nice to see a shot of the OCC coffee but the most important question: who gets to keep the expensive coffee grinder? Shame the let lasted such a short time, it'll be hard to go back to coffeeshop-working.

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  4 роки тому +3

      Oh I definitely get to keep it 😆 I'll let Kate have the Chemex since she doesn't have any way of brewing coffee at home and I have an aeropress, and I'll give her my hand grinder, but I'm keeping the big grinder haha.

    Curious ...
    If I recall correctly, you got your long term French visa under some kind of "artist" incentive. Can you explain, describe what it will take to renew or get permanent residency?
    - If we know the requirements and the challenges ... we might be able to help.
    As a retired accountant / CPA, good for you to engage a professional!
    - The number one thing is making sure you have an adequate, sustainable income. Not always easy or fun ... and may reduce time for achieving artistic dreams.
    Enough income and good fortune, you can do anything!
    Best wishes.

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  4 роки тому

      Yeah, keeping the income higher is a necessary goal. Hopefully this is the year of settling it at the right level and growing a bit. Thanks! Renewal is a mystery but hopefully by entrenching myself here and paying my taxes on time, they'll want to keep me around 😁

    Jay - Surely the owners could have reduced your rent? I do that sometimes with my tenants that are nice folks simply to avoid looking for someone new. Next, is it not possible to buy a years worth of wifi?? I have to do that so my AirBnB guests have unlimited access. Why don't you look into the cost. Here in South Africa the cheapest offer is: 365 days for 200gigs costing 125 euros (R2,000). Surely it must be even cheaper in France?

      You've jumped into the middle of his life. I recommend that you start by watching his video of 20 in 20 where he toured each arrondissement in 20 days. It's a good starting point to meet Jay. He did a daily vlog every single day for three years so most of us have been following Jay a long time. But I totally understand that jumping in at this point in his life might be confusing. He's basically catching up his long time followers on his office experience and what happened. :)

    Lol said this Months ago and you removed my comment just like you will this one. But the truth is the truth. That was never an office just an adult playground. Neither you or your dreamer friends have a business. You just want to feel important. As you can see by your results. Having an office makes no difference.99% of all creative work is done at the spur of the moment. So no office required. As your results again show.
