My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Over four years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGearList
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off UA-cam? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. So instead people often drop off or ship things to the Peloton Cafe in Paris for me.
Thanks for watching!

I'm French and was expecting yet another "American guide to France" but I loved this video. Very well written, not dissing the French. Good content mate! On behalf of my compatriots: Merci l'ami :)
Je t'en prie ! Thanks for the kind review 🙂
What would your initial expectations have to do with Americans?
He’s French but said mate 😂 he lied just to get likes on a comment and made sure it was nice so it could get traction 😂
@@stepahead5944 Because they are French…and probably miserable.
@@cjlproductions3281maybe French people can say mate too? Or is it exclusively English? Mate. 🙄
Tip number 26: the best view in Paris is not from the top of the Eiffel Tower;it's from the top of the Arc de Triomphe.
It took my five years of living in SW France and 3 months in Paris to learn all this 😅
My tips: go to the back of every church you can! Prettiest views are back there! Also most streets are too small to turn right on red, literally will not work if two cars try to move through the intersection at once 😭 If you’re just visiting Paris for a week, spend each day in a different neighborhood. Take the metro (it is its own experience) but walk as much as you can to get a feel for the city! If you only have a week in France, head south!! Saying “Bonjour” will change your entire trip for the better 🙌🏼 Try out all the French you can, most people will really like it or at least they won’t be insulted by your attempt. And finally, eat the baguettes, take every opportunity for a croissant, and worry about walking it off layer.
Don't go to Paris, go to the south of France.
We watch you in Paris all the time and went to a restaurant our first day here and you were there. So glad to see you and your pup in real life
Another Tip. Or rather, travel advice. If you look for a very nice place to visit in an afternoon, take the line H at Gare du Nord, and visit Enghien-les-Bains. It's a 15 minutes train ride that'll lead you to a small town, but it's absolutely beautiful, and it's home of one of France's best chocolate maker. There is a beautiful lake, and in the summer there's often a Jazz Festival where they'll set up a floating scene on said lake. Plus there is a Casino if it's your thing.
So yeah, try and visit it, it's worth it.
Aaaaaaaaààaààaaaàaààaaaàà to
Thanks for this information! I like to try these little off the beaten path cities!
Please tell us the name of the chocolate maker in this town. Does he have a retail shop here?
@@user-dl4fp1of7e
Le cacaotier. There is another one which is named Le Scarabée d'Or which is really good too, but my favorite is Le Cacaotier.
As an American who loves travel and France in particular, thank you for such very insightful tips on visiting Paris, and - as other commenters mentioned - I’m so glad this was NOT another giddy, uneducated, 20-something video showing us where to drink chocolat!! Merci 🌻
Paris is simply wonderful. Everyone needs to enjoy this city.
I sort of feel sorry for people who don't, they're missing so much ❤
LOVE THIS! I hope you had as much fun making it as it was for us watching it.
I appreciate videos like this that are "to the point" without the fluff. Thank you for the information.
Came across your video, I was curious cause a lot of people give wrong info, you were spot on. good info. I’ve lived in paris now for 14-years. I jus want to add that if it’s really stormy out, do not take a cab or eg Uber. Traffic becomes horrible and you’re better off taking the metro.
Best and most comprehensive guide I've watched. Thank you so much!
I love this kind of videos you make. Just like the one for how to use the metro! Soooo helpful. Thank you Jay 😀
My pleasure!
Jay, the best part of your videos is whenever you tell us to *not* do something. It's hysterical and just makes us want to take your advice all the more seriously.
😆😆 Was thinking of making a whole video on not being *that* tourist
@@JaySwanson Please do. And be sure to dress the part and say all "those" things.
I’m from Los Angeles and recently moved here to Paris 4 months ago.. I love it! Very useful tips, also for tourists.. be prepared for some stares from locals on the metro. I thought I was doing something wrong when I first arrived, but it was just that I looked “touristy”.. don’t take it personal, it’s just easy to tell whose a tourist or a local :) … You may also say, “Bonjour, ça va?”- it means, hello, how are you?.. If someone says it to you, then you can just respond with, “ça va” to let them know you’re good. Moreover, if it’s evening, you say “Bonsoir”. And another important word you may already know is “merci”.. which means, thank you. I myself am still learning some social cues, but nobody is perfect, so don’t worry too much about language barrier, just enjoy your time in Paris!
Welcome to Paris :) glad you're enjoying it ! Don't worry about looking too touristy, just do you !
@@-jltt- Thank you, I appreciate it!!
Jay - This video is awesome!! It takes me back to when we first began watching. Cooper makes it so much better.
Haha, he steals the show for sure
Jay, thanks for doing this video. When I told my husband that Metro tickets were no longer available in carnets of 10 he was stunned. I had him watch this with me and we took notes. Now we know we need to get a Navigo card for our next trip in May, our 7th visit in 9 years. We enjoy your videos. Having Cooper as your sidekick is a bonus.
Thank you! And yeah, he's already a lot of fun bopping around
Wow Bonnie, you like France ! Hope the parisiens are treating you well
I agree. I have bought the carnet on many previous visits and I'm glad to know about this (unfortunate?) change.
The paper tickets are back fortunately!! Lots of complaints, they had to back out of it.
I got Jay's guide. It's EXCELLENT. Well worth the money! Thanks Jay!
I loved the style of this video! Very nicely done, great stuff!! Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure!
Ok you’re my new fav! Love it how you’re funny and straight to the point. Heading to Paris in a couple of weeks!
Yup, I LOVED this one! Your energy was super, personality, well what can I say, it was JAYtabulous, and lots of fun to watch. Really great job and thank you!
My pleasure! I had a lot of fun with it, obviously haha
Clear and concise. I was in Paris recently and can say that these are tips that are true. They work. Tnx Jay.
Thanks Bruce!
Bonjour. OK, you screwed up my youtube viewing routine … I normally read comments while the presenter talks endlessly about nothing worthy of note. If it has potential but too chatty (or speaks too slowly) I’ll bump up the playback speed to 1.5 or more. 5 SECONDS in you have me glued in place fearful of moving in case I miss something. You Sir, deserve a golden thumbs up! I’m going to check out your book, other vids, and then your Patreon. We are looking at options for the Eiffel Tower. Extremely well done. I’d recommend you to anyone. Well, maybe not the police.
Thank you! 🤗
When we were in Paris the only people that were rude to us were the scammers near the Eiffel Tower. I do think that this is largely due to the fact that we made an effort to speak the language and be respectful. (Also if anyone near a tourist site asks if you "speak english" or want you to sign something just say "non" and walk away.
So who was in Paris???
@@thankgodfordrugss My famliy and myself.
It was straight up scary in the evening at the tower, hundreds of people harassing my girlfriend to the point she texted me in the bathroom panicked saying help!.
@@inigomontoya8943 personally I wouldn't let that slide, that's just me tho🤷
@@thankgodfordrugss Me neither but it’s me versus a few hundred dudes fresh off the boat.
This came just in time --- I was in Paris and went to Belgium for a few days, now heading back. Your IDF app already is helping me top off!! Thanks Jay!
Awesome! Glad it's working 🙂
Somehow I missed this the first time. Very helpful for my upcoming 5th trip to France. Still learning. Thx Jay. 🇦🇺
Thnx Jay,
After several trips to Paris the past several years, you are spot on. Merci
Thanks John!
So fun, even though most of these I’ve already learned. There’s always more to learn and you are my go-to guy!
I've got more in the pipeline for sure!
Simply wonderful tips!! Thanks! !
You're welcome!
I arrived in Paris today and I am so happy to be back! I’ve traveled here nearly every year for 25 years and agree with your tips and also picked up a couple new ones. Agree completely about staying near Notre Dame. We finally figured out staying on the Champs Elysee was boring and we spent all our time traveling. I bought your first guide and appreciate all you have done!
Ahhh champs Elysées 😆 next tip video haha. Thank you for getting the first one! Grateful for the support 😊
Best area is Le Marais 👌
Le Marais is also a great area. 🥂🥂
Hi Kimberly, as a french guy not living in Paris, I hope that in your 25+ trips you tried other cities, like Bordeaux, Lyon or Rennes, my hoemtown ! :)
Why!? Paris is the last city in Europe i would visit twice. It's so overrated. It's a dirty filled with rats city with scammers and beggers everywhere. The Vaucluse region is where you wanna go in France. Or a city like Prague.
Went there last summer, it was really amazing trip
I loved this one! I’m planning a Paris trip (take 2!) for either the fall or next spring and I’m certainly eager to apply what I’ve learned from you when I get there. Keep up the great work and best wishes to you and Cooper. 😊✌️
Thank you!
Great tips. Coming in May. Thanks.
Dude, this video is so well made!
Man I just got back from 2 weeks in Paris. I used to watch your videos to learn, and I still do; but now I watch them to be reminded about Paris. The sound they play when the metro is coming really brought me back haha
Happy they can serve to pull you back in a bit 🙂

Thanks for sharing this video. It was helpful and informative. 😊😊
I didn't realize how helpful watching these videos would be, until I went to Paris and would think to myself "oh my god, Jay Swanson did video on this"
Haha, prep through entertainment
Awesome video! I will be moving my daughter to Paris this year for school and there were some very useful tips to help her there.
Great!

Thank you!
Love this, thank you
These tips are gold!
Thank you!
Awesome! Thanks!
So glad I found this video, thank you! Not least for the info about the carnet/paper tickets, which I relied on in Paris a few years ago, now I won’t get off the plane at Orly and be stuck playing catch up on all the changes.
Awesome video Jay! And you’re looking great by the way!
Thank you!
Thanks much! Merci bien! Been in Paris 3x before but planning a solo trip in June for my birthday! Some of the things you mentioned I haven’t done before, so I appreciate it. 🤜🏻🤛🏻

Great tips, mate!! I’m going to Paris Tuesday to Thursday as a birthday treat. I’ve downloaded the IDF app already. And… never even thought of looking Behind something, like sacré coureur !! What a beautiful sight!
Always good to sneak around and see what's just around the corner

I've been living here for 8 years and must say your tips are spot on! Biggest one on here is the taxi scammers in CDG, those guys are ruthless. Take care!
Love your content! Did a mother/daughter trip in 2017, wish we had your tips prior to that trip. We had a blast regardless, stayed in the Latin Quarter, and would definitely stay there again! We plan to go back soon! Oh and you're from Pullman??? We're also Eastern Washingtonians - Yakima!
Bonjour! Wonderful! Merci!
De rien!
I love Paris.
Bonjour ! Loved the format and energy of this video Jay! I’m lucky enough to be heading over again next week for a few weeks, and didn’t realise the paper carnet tickets are no longer - so thank you - I’ve got the IDF app now, which seems much easier than the RATP one. Even though I’ve lost count of my Paris trips (think I’m in double digits), I still always learn something new, helpful and interesting for your videos - merci beaucoup ! 💙🤍❤️
Very good tips, well done
Thanks!
The green signs killed me!!! I TOTALLY thought they were dispensaries! I’m a cali gal so yeah that it was hilarious. Love this video.. will be going to Paris soon and you’ve been a great help
