    Okay, that timing did in fact blow my mind. That's incredibly fast. Thanks for another super solid video. It will be interesting to see how charging fees evolve over time. Right now they seem somewhat expensive. I'm hoping with infrastructure build out they drop dramatically and maybe you only get charged a lot if you hog it after your vehicle is done charging.

      Thanks! I really wanted to use that gag at the end so I had to fill that 12 minutes as best I could. Actually I just used my phone to record the audio, but caught a cold half way through so some of the narration sounds different than other parts. Random behind the scenes info there haha. You're right that charging is expensive. The majority of AC charging is free, but I'm willing to pay any amount of money to charge this fast. I'm planning to make a video comparing the price to gas soon, to see how surprising that is.

    Great video! I definitely appreciated your take on DC charging stations in New Zealand vs the USA because that really is the core issue. The thing I really dig about the Zero SR/F and SR/S is that you can achieve 12kW charging with widely available AC chargers. That's not quite as nice as the 20kW DC charge rate of the Energica, but it's really not that far off in the grand scheme of things. It boils down to about 30 minutes of charge time using your 20%-80% charging strategy. Just enough time to stretch my legs and grab a drink. If DC fast chargers were common in the USA (especially in rural areas where it's more fun to ride), the Energica would be a no-brainer. Until we grow that network though, it really is a tough decision... 12kW of charging everywhere? or 20kW of charging in some metro areas. If Energica had an option to achieve 12kW (or even 7kW to get the most out of typical J1772 stations) of AC charging in addition to DC charging, that would be a game changer for sure. Anyway, thanks for another great video! I hope someday you get to ride that beautiful bike without rain!!! :-)

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks man! Yeah I totally agree. My Zero could charge in an hour like the SR/F when it had all it's chargers installed, but I didn't have the infrastructure. We have the totally opposite problem haha. It would be sweet if Energicas had 6kW chargers though, just to slow-charge for free on an AC station while doing some shopping. The 3kW charger is perfect for campsites here, but not for campsites in the US. We really need to get some global standard so all these bikes work for all countries!

    • @nrml76
      @nrml76 4 роки тому

      Zero seem to very firmly prioritising the US market over becoming a leading player on the world stage. Unless they act quickly, they run the risk of becoming the next Harley (failing motorcycle company) or even worse the next Nokia. It would be a real shame if that happened considering their pioneering roots. They should be the Tesla of the motorcycle world with everyone playing catch up.

    • @derniederrheiner4518

      In Europe it is not a issue to charge with 12kW. During the last 9.000km I have to wait less then 30 Minutes at a Typ2 charging-station. This are very common here. A dc charger is more problematic to find in a remote area.

The Ego's top speed is limited to 150mph so it is't a liter bike killer yet. You're right about the charging times though. They're getting better but still have to come down, same as the price. I don't see it taking very long though. Gas bikes are making insane power these days but struggling to meet emissions standards, so I either the big companies like Honda/Yamaha/Ducati need to make the shift to electric or they'll won't be allowed on the roads. That's the moment when battery tech will speed up.

      In the meantime they will probably bring turbos and superchargers into 400 and 650cc bikes to still have power and keep emissions low like they did with small displacement cars in the last years.
      You also have Kymco who makes EV scooters since some time and will soon bring the Revonex to the market.
      To be fair, for emissions EV bikes should be rated on the emissions made to create the batteries and also to recycle the batteries.

    Perfection! Great video, Sam! I want to rub this in the faces of all bike manufacturers. Energica have this just right.
    I agree that Zero have been understandably U.S.-centric, but from what I understand, they've sold more bikes in Europe in any case. Perhaps they also look at the majority of journeys people make and decided that AC rather than DC rapid charging fits most cases.
    For those of us with the need to travel further afield though, this isn't an option, and as much as I loved all the effort you put into making the fastest possible charging set-up for the Zero, that's an option very few people can consider.
    The Charge Tank was the best fit for me, once able to retrofit the 6kW one last year, but the Energica approach is just perfect.
    Your queuing experience at DC chargers is familiar to me from my LEAF and more recent MG ZS EV experience, but rollout of DC chargers has ramped up here in the UK quite heavily. It was reasonably static for a few years.
    The U.S. will certainly have to catch up on that count and it certainly will, no doubt. Zero have to consider this.
    Just a thought… Do you have the option to unplug at 80% and plug into an AC charge point at some locations? We have locations in the UK where both are installed - a DC rapid unit and then a 6kW AC unit nearby. These aren't super common, but are helpful if stopping for a longer period, and of course free up the DC for other users.
    "Are you aware of the environmental impact of lithium ironing?" made me properly LOL.. 😂
    Great work! 👍

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks again! Yeah I think you're right about Zero selling more in Europe. Definitely a good amount. From what I've heard, AC charging in a lot of places in Europe is free (same as NZ), so that could be a huge incentive to go with Zero. And yep, there are some stations here that have AC and DC together, but they're rare. That's a great idea though. Nice trick to save money! I'm still excited about the AC stations set up at the big shopping centers, but campsites are too far in the middle of no where. If that's where you're staying, they're perfect, but I'd pay any amount of money to charge fast and not ASK if I can plug in 😂

    • @annekecornee
      @annekecornee 3 роки тому

      @@NewZeroland Zero is perfect for Europe, not because AC is free, but AC chargers are at places where you ride and stop with a motorbike (secondary roads, towns), even on a tour. DC chargers are mainly placed along the highway. Which most riders avoid because it is boring. Many quickcharge locations along the highway also have AC (at least here in the Netherlands). I just bought a Zero SR/S premium (6 kW internal charger). That's slow for quickcharging, but fast enough for a coffee or lunchbreak.

Upside on AC charging: I visit a lot more towns these days, especially on longer tours. Type 2 takes me three quarter of an hour to charge fully (20-100%) - 14.6 kWh SRF and after two hours on the bike that's exactly what I need ;)
    10:45 Not really the same, since you can go get a jerry can of fuel but doing that with electricity is a bit different.. The furthest I've ridden my DSR in one day was about 180 miles, call it 290 km. I have a two-module SC2.5 on mine. I spent a total of about two hours charging. Departure was at 100% from home, I made a "safety stop" on the way out and charged from about 40% to 90% before I hit the mountains, then when I got to my destination (with about 50% charge remaining) I put it on charge while I got lunch. Did some noodling round town, and then headed home; safety stop on the way home (with about 55% remaining) for another half hour, then arrived at home with something like 40% charge.
    If I'd been willing to ride more conservatively I could have done it easily with a single charging stop, but where's the fun in that? In total I put about one and three quarters of a charge into the bike from ChargePoint stations on that trip. It cost me about three bucks.
    I'm not saying I don't want the option of DC fast charging- obviously I do- but the energica's slow 3 kW on board charger is really not great for those of us who like to charge on the cheap.

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  4 роки тому +1

      I feel ya. DC charging costs definitely add up. It woulda been nice if the AC charger was 6kW, but I think even then I wouldn't use it out on the road. The only places that are missing DC stations here have campsites, and without custom wiring to use 2 diginows individually, I'd still be limited to 3kW. At the end of the day, different bikes suit different needs. Zeros are still amazing where there's no DC infrastructure.

    I still think the solution lies in a program similar to the one they use for propane tanks: You remove your battery and give it to the attendant who then gives you back a fully charged battery for a small fee. Not only would you have a full charge every time, but the whole process would take less than 5 minutes, and you could apply that to everything that takes rechargeable batteries: Phones, tools, cars, etc. No waiting times or fear that someone else is using the charger.
    That's the easy part (though expensive to start up), where it gets hard is convincing manufacturers to standardize the batteries and make them hot-swappable.
    Great video.

      I agree! That's a future I'd love to see. Modular, too.. so you can use a small part of your big car battery in your bike (when not driving the car, or when you don't need much range). They just need to get to a point where battery tech is at it's peak and no technological advancements are coming. And then yeah, everybody would have to agree to use the same ones. Whoever develops that battery will rule the entire industry.

    The issue with the Zero bikes is their battery voltage. They did develop DC fast charging, but it didn't work in the real world because of non compliant chargers.
    Although the Chademo standard was meant to work down to 50v, in reality very few EVs that could actually benefit from fast charging have battery packs that low. Chademo is limited to 125 amps and at 50 volts, that's only around 6Kw anyway! Most of the installed chargers only work down to 200-250v and the Zero is well below that. The CCS standard is meant to work down to 200v, but often doesn't. Accommodating a very wide voltage range makes the power electronics design much harder and there really aren't any cars being built that need it. Most EV's have battery packs around 300-400v, with CCS able to serve the new higher voltage systems up to 800v.
    Zero bought charger for development that was fully compliant with the standard, but customers then found most of the public chargers wouldn't work. Their only solution would be to re-engineer the whole bike around a higher system voltage.

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  4 роки тому

      Yeah true. I was really hoping they'd take the opportunity to raise the voltage when building a completely new bike (the SR/F) but it seems to be the same 14.4 battery, just repackaged. We'll have to see what they do eith their future bikes.

    I went to the Zero dealer and was kinda surprised by how high the FX was but the deal killer was the hight of the receiver mounted rack I wanted to use to carry it. I’m going to go to a larger dealer who is more interested in working with me on lowering the bike a couple of inches and find a welder who can build or modify a rack so it’s low enough that I feel confident loading the bike by myself. The FX has almost 900 mm of travel in the rear, I only weigh 59 kilos and I am thinking I could lose some travel to lower the bike. I have a rack I carry my SurRon on and am comfortable with it. It’s been dropped about 200 mm, it’s probably not strong enough but I haven’t any problem with it scraping on drive ways. My truck is a4X4 so it’s pretty high already. So until I work out a couple little problems I’m going to be riding my SurRon. I put a basket on it so I can take the dog to wherever we’re going to walk her. Some Comments: The charge rate does impact on the degredation (= loss of capacity) a lot. On Teslas you can read out how much AC and DC (=fast) charging was done and you can read out the remaining usable capacity. An ok ratio of AC/DC is 3/1 but if it is the other way round or worse you double the degredation. On Teslas rule of thumb is: You loose 5% after the first 50000km and then 1% for every other 50000km. Only charge your battery to 100% if you intend to use it straight away. Do not leave the discharged battery, charge it to 20% quickly. Next comment is those Tesla Destination charger used to be able to switch from Tesla (CAN based protocol) only to Tesla and other EV (Type 2 protocol). Thats done with moving DIP switch 2 from up to down to Legacy mode in Tesla speak. Unfortunately for some if not all markets Tesla removed that option. Next comment: Those Tritium fast chargers are actually designed and made in Australia (yes i know you are NZ but we are brothers). Isn't that amazing? We can actually make HiTech things?? Not just growing cotton, coal and fat sheep??? Final comment: Great video, top editing, not too short, not too long, entertaining, funny.....just make sure you actually move your mouth when talking for some you might be hard to understand otherwise. I would LOVE to ship my bike over and do a road trip around Aus and Tasmania.. just need to look into how possible that would be with the infrastructure. I'm so spoiled over here. About DC charging, your 3 to 1 ratio is a good idea. Energica suggests plugging in to 100% to balance cells at least every 2 weeks. I haven't heard anything about fast charging degrading batteries though. There seem to be so many factors involved... temperature, cycles, age. I figure the charging algorithm keeps it safe enough not to worry about it, and unplugging at 80% should extend it's life. Anyway, a guy could get used to these 12 minute top ups :D

    • @moestrei

      @@NewZeroland I would take it seriously. When it comes healthy charge /discharge rates you need to know the system voltage (in V) and rated capacity (in kWh) of your battery to calculate the discharge Amperage (Amp hours in Ah) . For example my E-Ninja has a 6.5kWh battery and a system voltage of 72V which gives 6500Wh/72V = 90Ah. Then you can apply the recommended charge/discharge rate which is 0.5C for my battery: 90Ah * 0.5/h=45A max. recommended charge rate.1C is typically the maximum and may require thermal management which would be 90A charge current or 6.5kW charge power.
      A Tesla with a 85kWh battery and a system voltage of 400V has 212Ah cells (or 74 cells of 2.9Ah in parallel to be precise). Supercharging at 120kW gives 300A which gives a rate of 1.5C which is high and only possible due to the very good thermal management and Cobalt in the cells.
      The Hyundai IONIC classic even did 1.7C but had batteries with a very high Cobalt content. Interestingly the IONIC Facelift with a much bigger battery has a greatly reduced charge rate (Hmmmmmmmm........).
      Anyhow I do not know the system voltage of your Energica and the thermal management but do your maths and then make your informed decision of how to treat your battery.
      With cars there is a strong correlation between Amps in/out and the lifetime of the battery and I cannot see how that should be different with bikes.

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  4 роки тому

      For sure, and thanks for breaking that down. Energicas are 300V, so at one of these 125A DC stations they COULD potentially charge at 30kW+, but the're limited to 75A, or 23kW. I haven't been able to get over 21kW for some reason, but it's fast enough for now. I'm not sure what the battery amp hours are though, so it's hard to calculate what the C-rating is. Definitely over 1C, but it seems to be safe. I'm just gonna go with the maximum of what Energica engineered the bike for and see what happens :P

    • @moestrei
      @moestrei 4 роки тому

      @@NewZeroland To get the Ah for your Energetica is easy: The nominal capacity is 18.9kWh and you say the system voltage is 300V. 18900Wh / 300V = 63Ah. Charging with 21kW gives a ratio of 21 / 18.9 = 1.1C for DC fast charging which is the border for a battery without thermal management. Interestingly the warranty is for 1200 cycles which is the low end of cycle life for a Li battery. Treated well you get >5000 cycles.....so it is worth it!. BTW the battery needs to have a certain temperature to receive the fastest charge rate, around 35°C. Teslas actually pre-heat the battery when you navigate to a Supercharger for that reason. Will be interesting to see what happens in Summer. Your Energetica will have an OBD2 type of service port. Try to get the required cables (or Blutooth?) and scanning software to get a real inside view of what is happening with battery and drive.

    Electricity vs Gasoline:
    25 cents per kwh for 60% of a 12kwh battery. Charged in 12 minutes for an additional 25 cents per minute.
    That comes down to about 5 dollars.
    50% of the battery gets you ~40km (timestamp 01:05). So 60% will get you ~48km.
    So you're paying 5 dollars for about ~48km.
    1 liter gasoline costs ~2.14 New Zealand Dollars.
    Assume 20 km per 1 liter of fuel.
    That gets you ~47km for the same 5 dollars.
    Driving this electric motorcycle costs the same in fuel as a fuel-efficient gasoline powered car.
    This doesn't take into consideration other costs such as cost to buy, cost to maintain, comfort, or anything else where gas powered vehicles blow electrics out the water.
    This is what I dislike about the marketing around electrics. They sell it as a "more expensive to buy, but saves money in the long run" type of investment deal. It's not. If you're going to be charging your car using fast chargers next highways you're paying premium prices for electricity on top of additional fees that when added up will cost about the same as gas.
    Either electric powered vehicles become much more comfortable to use, and then I'm willing to pay the same amount of $$$ for the same amount of comfort I have with gas powered today.
    Or, the price comes down drastically to compensate for the loss of comfort.

      These stations are only for road trips, when you really need to charge fast. Most EV charging happens at home overnight, where my bike costs about $2.50 for a full battery. My average range is about 130km, so that's better than any gas bike I know of. BUT THEN there are a bunch of FREE charging stations. They're just not as fast. Those take 3 hours vs. 30 min, so it's a compromise, but I haven't heard of any free gas stations 😎

      Nope, I'm from California. My wife and I moved here about 8 years ago.

    Zero dealers are NOTORIOUS for talking shit about DC fast charging. It is one of the many things I hate about Zero. Paying money for DC fast charging and paying more for maintenance are dealbreakers for me in getting an Energica right now (along with having no DC network near me anyway)

      I've heard whispers of Zero integrating DC charging options into their next bikes, but we'll have to wait and see. I hope they do! I'm jealous of Lex Summer's free DC stations in Switzerland. The cost really adds up, but it's totally worth it to me.

      @@NewZeroland That could be a game changer for zero. I'm not knocking anyone for being fine with the cost, electric vehicles are definitely worth it...just kind of dulls the sparkle for me.
