This film tells a very important topic in French socio-political panorama: the incarceration and consequent trials of officer Alfred Dreyfus , accused in 1894 of having handed over documents classified as secrets of defense to the Prussian enemy. By the time the film was made, the Rennes trial had just ended and Dreyfus was acquitted of certain charges.

The film develops in 11 frames and it starts in 1894 when Dreyfus was found guilty by the military court and he was transferred to the Devil’s Island penal colony in Guyana. The suicide of Colonel Henry and his written confession allow the prisoner to return to France and allow the opening of a new trial. In Rennes, Dreyfus prepares his defense with his lawyer and finally he manages to be found guilty "with extenuating circumstances".

Bravo Roberto che ci ricorda storie del passato purtroppo sempre attuali.
Conosco bene la storia dell'ufficiale Dreyfus, trovo incredibile che in quei tempi tra i militari, abbia potuto vincere tanto disonore e corruzione.
Di questa storia c'è una folta filmografia, il primo film fu girato già nel 1899, era muto, poi nel 1958 con l'affare Dreyfus, nel 1991 prigionieri dell'onore, e il più recente 2019 l'ufficiale e la spia, li consiglio vivamente, senza dimenticare un altro protagonista di questa triste storia che ci ha lasciato uno dei suoi più emozionanti scritti, Emil Zola che per aver preso le difese di Dreyfus pubblicamente con il suo J'accuse dovette scontare un anno di prigione accusato di vilipendio della nazione. E tutto ciò accadeva a fine ottocento.

Is the suicide of Colonel Henry the first suicide of the history of cinema ?
It's so weird seeing such a horrendous real-life event portrayed like that, nowadays it's common, but this movie came out the same year as Dreyfus was wrongfully sentenced
Una semplice curiosità: nel caso dei documentari (parlo qui sia di Meiles che dei lavori dei Lumiere), la proiezione era affiancata da un narratore che andava a spiegare cos'era successo o si limitavano semplicemente a far vedere gli accadimenti agli spettatori?
ENG - A rather simple question: when talking about documentaries (regarding both Meiles and the Lumiere brothers), was the projection helped by a narrator who would explain what was going on or was the projection just a way to show the spectators what happened during certain events?
poteva accadere di tutto, dipendeva dai gestori dei cinema, poteva esserci qualcuno che spiegava o che leggeva/traduceva le didascalie, oppure un orchestra o un musicista che suovana, oppure anche niente se il cinema era troppo piccolo.
