A P hey don’t forget what what was the cause of the opium war. It was because the British and other foreign powers were selling drugs in China and the Chinese Government decided to stop the continued sale of drugs and getting more Chinese citizens from being addicted to these drugs. So the foreign powers started the war saying that it is not fair for the Chinese Government to stop them from selling drugs.
Would you like some foreign powers to come and sell drugs freely in your country?

Hong Kong's economy is very free. That's true. But that isn't necessarily a good thing. The 10 richest Chinese make up 1.5% of its GDP. The 10 richest people in HK make up 35% of HK's GDP. Knowing that China will not put HK in the eye should be a sign that HK should focus more on its own. The HK gov is so corrupted and HKers want to elect a head who will do things for HK. Mainlanders will often persuade HK to merge with Shenzhen which is putting things too simply.

Douglas Teo that is objectively true, I can agree on that. One major reason is that since more Chinese people can afford tickets, and to build more cinemas, the audience base is huge in China which draws many local producers and technicians from Hong Kong. The only obstacle is that restrictions/ censorship is still a thing, many topics are banned in the mainland. If it becomes more open, I can guarantee you it is possible to have a Chinese Hollywood. It is an understandable production shift. Hong Kong has few stars now even Hong Kongers don’t quite have hope for that. But we still have some great movie crew members. I would say in the greater entertainment business, there will still be some involvement of Hong Kong crew members.

      www.marxists.org/reference/archive/mao/works/1936/11/x01.htm
In an interview with American reporter Edgar Snow, Chairman Mao said: It is the immediate task of China to regain all our lost territories, not merely to defend our sovereignty below the Great Wall. This means that Manchuria must be regained. We do not, however, include Korea, formerly a Chinese colony, but when we have re-established the independence of the lost territories of China, and if the Koreans wish to break away from the chains of Japanese imperialism, we will extend them our enthusiastic help in their struggle for independence. The same thing applies to Formosa. As for Inner Mongolia, which is populated by both Chinese and Mongolians, we will struggle to drive Japan from there and help Inner Mongolia to establish an autonomous state." (p. 110 in Red Star over China, by Edgar Snow).
Formosa, unlike South Korea, was arbitrarily infused with 2 million non-productive armed Chinese gangsters between 1945-50. After killing off most of the native intelligentsia in 1947, their upper echelon not only occupied non-productive government posts, but through their control of media, education, religion, usurped whatever advances that could have been made.
Unlike South Africa, where national anthem, flag, emblem were changed in the Olympic games immediately after the end of White Minority government. Formosa is still under Chinese Colonial Mafia rule.
The 2 million Chinese gangsters US 7th Fleet shipped onto Formosa between 1945-50 have been busy moving their children and assets to Canada, Australia, USA, Britain, Singapore while they continue capital destruction on the island. It is inevitable, as in South Africa, that the native will naturally reassert themselves politically and militarily. The misguided and misinformed US thinktanks' assessment simply cannot withstand the test of time.
p.s. Empirically, both China and USA ruling classes cannot be trusted. India is very smart to be equidistant from both. #1 enemy of PLA is the 80% of Chinese 'low level' population. Japan, Vietnam, Formosa, India are just distractions.

HongKong has been promised 50 years economic independence, nothing more or less. HongKong special district was formed under China constitution 31,HK base law was also made and approved by Chinese legislation without British government involved。 under the base law, China can completely take over HK with one nation and one system if foreigners invade, riot without control and other conditions. In fact, one China is the key in the whole relationship, two systems just for transition period.

I respect your point of view. I disagree some points you mentioned. there is pass between HongKong and Mainland of China, it is to make sure not too many mainland people goes to Hong Kong at one time. you know we have a big population. Chinese government encourage mainland people travel to HK and shopping there which to help HK's economy. The bridge is built which to help HK has more connection with mainland and more convenient to travel to mainland as well. transportation is not one way. Chinese government provides a lot of benefit to HK for free. One country two systems, One country first. Chinese government and Chinese people treat people in HK as a family not colony, because mainland people have a same ancestor with local HK people.

Hong Kong's significance to China was that it acted as a gateway to an other-wisely inaccessible country. This was true ever since the Qing dynasty signed it away until the 21th century.
China have since then opened up significantly - diplomats no longer need to discuss backroom deals in HK in fear of looking like traitors, nor do western firms have to use HK as a intermediary to access the Chinese market. HK have lost it's primary use to China and anyone who needs access to it.
Sure HK is flourishing, but that has more to do with China having flourished in the same time and HK merely cashing in. China now wants HK to just be another city that it is, that's what is happening right now.
I suspect that China is trying to prevent a mass exodus of people and capital like in 1997, and is trying to reel in HK in a more gradual fashion. Whether this course of action will achieve its intended result we'll never know.

There is a strange logic in HK.
Mainland China's Intervention in Hong Kong's Economy: One Country, Two Systems is dead
Mainland China does not interfere in Hong Kong's economy: Corrupt government does not care about Hong Kong
Hong Kong's economy goes down - the mainland's governance is incompetent, one country, two systems make Hong Kong fall into the abyss
Hong Kong's in good economy - Hong Kong people administer Hong Kong, Hong Kong's achievements are precisely due to its different system from that of the mainland, and have nothing to do with the mainland.
Wechat, Mobile Payment: Economic Invasion, Destroying One Country, Two Systems
Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge-Corruption Project, Wasting the People's money
High-speed rail, which can be accessed at 2013, was delayed due to "democratic" until the end of 2018.Costs have been raised by tens of billions
Then they attacked the "incompetence" of the "pro-Communist" ruling party with the increased cost.
Every time the economic data is bad, the mainland government is blamed for its inaction.
Once the mainland government does something, it immediately undermines democracy and one country, two systems.
    Thats why HK is dying

Are you expact on 2047, when One country two system officially ended, then the Chinese government just suddently take over everything? HK will fk up real hard on that time. I am not saying that HK people should not go for freedom or anything, my point is they need a process to end the One country two system. Plus, there is no evidence to prove Chinese government appoint any leaders, and of course the leader who elected needs to passed by the Chinese government because there is no countries wants to elected a leader that make their homeland divided into two parts, and CCP wants to make sure of it. Think about it, if the CCP intervent HK, do you think CCP will allow laws to be recalled?

    1. Hong Kong improvement at the 1980s was because of the China open door for trading, and HK was the stepping stone for the western country., not because of British. ( anyone can compare what was happen in last 100's years of British colonial., the freedom and human right., we had the British passport but can not live in British, Hong Kong governor was assigned by the Queen, not elected.)
    2. British had left behind a group of opposition, they opposed anything that the new government suggested, it is not good for the peoples, they are also leading the protest... that wrong.
Hong Kong is no longer British colonial, please also keep in mind that for the last 100s year, China continues to support Hong Kong ... because of Hong Kong and China is one family., without China, will western news at Hong Kong as it is?

Hong Kong is the middle ground for China to do international trade and raise capital, its so important for the outflow and inflow of capital for China and the world. The situation will never be changed until the day that China open up their economy and liberate itself.
