Today we are building a permanent trellis for growing dragon fruit.
If you want to see other trellis build options check out these videos:

For this build we created a 4x4 concrete post that was 6.5 feet long. It was reinforced with rebar and a threaded rod was cemented into the top of the post to connect our trellis frame. After we poured the concrete we let it dry then cure for a total of 48 hours.
We then dug 2 foot holes into the ground and cemented our concrete posts into them. This leaves a total of 4.5 feet above ground (anything between 3 -5 feet is ok). We will cover spacing of posts in a different video.
For the trellis tops we cut a metal beam into two pieces that was 24 inches long. On of of the beams we removed the center walls so that it would fit over the other beam to form a cross. We then drilled 2 holes on the walls (at the end) of each beam (the holes are large enough to slide in a schedule 40 1/2 inch pvc pipe). There was a total of 8 holes drilled. Next we cut our 1/2 inch pvc pipe to match the length of the beams, slid them into the holes and glued elbow joints at each corner. The end result was a square made up of schedule 40 1/2 inch pvc pipe supported by the metal beams).
Finally we placed the top of the trellis on the post and outlined where the threaded rods were. We drilled out the holes then secured it with a washer and bolt

Eric the PVC will deteriorate in the harsh sun but if you paint it they won't get brittle. White PVC doesn't have UV protection and is meant to be under ground.

I was just about to type that very thing. Been there done that. PVC needs paint, not to mention the heat from the metal will warp that PVC. I only use Metal Conduit outdoors for such projects anymore

Thanks Kev. Great Tip. Off to the hardware store😉. What I'm counting on though is for the dragon fruit to grow past the trellis and completely cover and shade the top. At least that's the goal😅

Have you thought about priming and painting the metal top supports to keep them from rusting? A coat of UV resistant paint on the PVC might delay UV embrittlement and prolong their lifespan.

      @@2guysandacooler I REALLY like the video....however, one point :
      - there aren't that many videos online on how to build a concrete trellis and most of them are in tagalog/filipino, but all of them don't detail the process of building the trellis FRAMEWORK. What I'm asking is if you can do another video building a framework and verbally detailing :
      - the wood used and how to put it together?
      - size of rebar, and how to lay/suspend it within the framework?
      - how to attach the bolts?
      - what mix of concrete you use (we won't need to see you mixing the concrete and filling the frames, as this video already does this)?
I know this is a huge request but I and others would greatly appreciate it as this resource doesn't exist at the moment.
Also, would you do this differently now, i.e. would you do a hybrid of your PVC mobile model and this one for an in-ground model...using the best of both world?
      Thanks for your time! 👍

So true. Wooden trellis will rot at the base and will need to be replaced every few years.

Thanks for sharing this. Are all your posts going to have planter boxes? Is this to protect against pest like rabbits? As it looks, the cement posts look like other plantations who plants DF straight on the ground and without planter containers.

So, most of my posts (i put 62 in the ground) have just a simple wire around them. Mainly for rabbits and other animals that might want to eat my tasty dragons. I'll be updating the dragon fruit project soon here on you tube

@@2guysandacooler Hey…I sent you an email yesterday : I wanted to know if you were going to set up a video with instructions, construction, and supplies as it pertains to the concrete forms? (I’m also curious as to what the black “Carbone” board is that you’re attaching the 1x4s to?). Also, do you coat the forms with diesel oil or some other substance, so the posts detach easier???
      Thanks! 👍🏾

Thanks. The series is a work in progress. We have more updates coming out soon. Our goal is to turn our back yard into a full-blown orchard. We are 99% there😁. As far as variety I would pick a couple different ones. Perhaps starting with a sugar dragon and a physical graffitti. If you call Tye at Spicy Exotics or send him an email let him know where you live and ask him what varieties might be better suited for your area. I think he offers a 4 variety special to give you some diversity in your plants (which is also great for cross pollination). Tell Tye I said Hi if you talk to him.
