In his time, I think this was the most commercially successful piece that Beethoven ever wrote.

First time I heard this piece I was in my teens and played by the Indianapolis symphony..real actors as soldiers were firing rifles on stage in front of the orchestra. Very cool!

I did't see maezvel's panharmonicon, where is it? If I am not wrong this piece written for panharmonicon(shots, cannons) and orchestra.

It was for panharmonicon at first, then Beethoven reworked it for large orchestra. I don't think the panharmonicon and orchestra are supposed to perform together....

Unfortunately one of the original Panharmonicons was destroyed in WWII. I'm not sure that any others are still extant, although it was apparently copied by other instrument makers.

I agree. In many places the tempo is sluggish.

I agree. If all wars would be fought like this, there would be world peace. Which in itself is not a bad idea.

Furchtbar dirigiert, überhaupt nicht zusammen. Ängstliche Dirigentin überträgt ihre Unsicherheit auf das ganze Orchester. Schade!
Conducted terribly, not together at all. Anxious conductor transmits her insecurity to the whole orchestra. A pity!

In der Tat fällt das Werk etwas auseinander, da fehlt Stringenz und der nötige Hauch "Unerbittlichkeit". Am besten finde ich tatsächlich die Schlagzeugklassen zu Beginn.
