Behringer 960 Sequencer Demo - Complex Patch Explained

  • A relatively complex patch with the 960 sequential controller at its heart. The euclidean algorithm of the Disting MK4 allows for interesting rhythmic motifs when used with a basic analogue step sequencer like the Behringer 960.
    00:16 - version I of patch*
04:51 - version II of patch*
05:43 - version III of patch*
*all versions of patch sequence are achieved by simply starting the sequence from a different step on the 960, (aside from version III, where the pulse count for 'the bleep' is modulated by a square LFO synced to the main clock)
More on using the Euclidean algorithm as a gate source with the 960 (or any sequencer): • Behringer 960 Sequence...

These are, hands down, the best Behringer 960 videos I’ve seen. The style of sequences you create, the explanations… don’t give up, you’re on to something. Totally makes me want to buy one to me they are the most important epic part of synth music I love. I just don’t wanna get all the eurorack stuff.

Thank you for your kind words, it’s very encouraging to hear. I must admit, I have slowed down on the video making front recently - I’ll have to step it up a gear or two and get back on it. Watch this space - I will get a video uploaded of a new patch / sequence in the next week.

Thanks! Nice hypnotic rhythms / textures! I'm working on some more complex techno-esq patch / track vids atm featuring a lot of new modules including the new Mutable Beads module (successor to Clouds featured in this vid). Hopefully get them uploaded soon

I’m digging this channel. What do you think the bare essentials are to get started? I already have a model D. Sequencer, filter, power? I’m quite novice with eurorack gear

Hi, thanks for the compliment. In answer to your question, it depends on how you want to expand your set up from what you already have, and your budget. For example, you may want something to modulate the filter on your model D so you don't have to sacrifice an oscillator on your model D to the task. You could buy a dedicated LFO module for that task, or if you have the budget, a very popular module that would fulfil that task and have plenty of other functions as your set up grew would be the Make Noise Maths. Or you may want an effect like a delay or reverb. If I were in your position, I'd be inclined to go for the Expert Sleepers Disting Mk4 which has over 100 functions in 4HP (small size) and is excellent value for money. It has several LFO algorithms, effects like delay, chorus and reverb, plus several oscillators such as a wavetable VCO plus the usual saw, square and triangle waveforms. It also can act as an envelope, VCA, Turing machine sequencer, Euclidean pulse genetator, sampler, volt per octave sample player, plus loads more. But you can only use one function at a time (though you can now get the Disting EX which is essentially two Distings in one). If you wanted a whole extra analogue synth voice then I'd say the most cost efficient way of doing that would be a semi modular synth. Something like the Neutron is a great option and regarded as best way to get into Eurorack as it has all you need for a synth voice (vcos, filter, vca, envelopes, LFO, noise, etc) plus a load of CV ins and outs for every function.

That's the beauty of eurorack - you can make a set up entirely tailored to what you want. For example, I bought a mutable instruments Clouds as I wanted a module that would use the rich tones generated by my analogue VCOs to make lush pads and drones that would compliment my synth sequences... There's a module for everything. You may want a RF radio receiver like the RD Nomad to add off the wall samples and textures/tones to your music. Check out Modulargrid.net if you haven't already, it's a great resource.

I've just re-read your original comment. When I first read it I thought you meant you already had a model D plus power, filter and sequencer. Right. Yeah, you'd need a power source such as behringers CP1A and a eurorack rack of some sort. I went with behringers eurorack 19" rack. Which has the CP1A power source plus a standard 19" rack ( the CP1A can power two 19" racks worth of modules, so you just can add a second rack minus the power supply, which u can get for around £40). That's the cheapest option. Or something like behringers eurorack go skiff is popular too.

hm a linear cv sequencer in combination with an euclidian pattern generator seems the key, have to think about it :)

The 961 interface also offers a way to select steps for the sequence (as opposed to having all 8 steps trigger). I’ve recently got a 961 so I’ll do a video soon. If u have the 911 envelopes I’d definitely recommend the interface as it’s got a few neat features like allowing to adjust the gate time of from the 960.

Scrap my previous comment (I was referring to the updated version of my ident). It’s made by a Korg minilogue XD. A patch I made with a very slow portamento. I first tapped a low note, then recorded and tapped a higher note an octave higher or so. And the filter is modulated by the envelope so it opens as the sustained note rises. And I think there’s some unison to fatten up the sound (which I may have modulated too so that the unison reduces as the note rises... or I may have done it by hand as I recorded. it was a while ago I made it). If you have a korg monologue XD I can send you the patch.
