Inside Southwark Cathedral... And Up On Its Roof

- Did you know that, for decades, Southwark Cathedral was the tallest building in London?
The Cathedral asked if we'd like to come down after hours for a snoop inside: to watch the bell ringers make some serious noise, and to get up onto the roof for some stunning views over London, that few get to see.
We said yes please.
Southwark Cathedral website: cathedral.southwark.anglican....
Vicki is an awesome presenter!
178 steps. That's equivalent to 15 stories isn't it?
I came down here to the comments to see if anyone had said that! ;-)
As did I - except in my case, from New Zealand, I came up!
Damn, beaten to it 😂
Pedantry says it should be equivalent to 15 storeys...
Ha! That's what I wrote on the FB page. :-D
Vicki Explores.... Southwark Cathedral would have been a better title haha
That’s a copy written feature of All The Stations.
Oh yh so it is
Nick Higgins do you work for tfl
Nick it anyway!
All the Cathedrals. All of them.
I would go for that!
Great video Vikki, All the Cathedrals.
Always happy to see a ‘Vicky explores’ at one of my favourite cathedrals!
Those bells ......what a glorious sound.
Russell Hogben I am a bellringer, never rung here though
Vicki, what a lovely video and the view from the top is just amazing. Thank you for this.
I went a couple days ago, my favourite cathedral i've visited so far, and that's saying something.
Love the expression on your face as you step out onto the roof, Vicki (4:03). Managed to get up the tower of St Paul's to experience a similar stunning view. I hope that you get more invites like this that you can share with the rest of us.
Thanks a lot, Vicki. Nice to know all that about Southwark Cathedral; many wonderful memories arose after hearing those beautiful bells again.
Nice tour Vicki. On my list for my next London visit
A quite informative video, thank you for sharing your experience.
Thanks for the great video Vicki. I also have had experiences in places like this - not Southwark Cathedral but working in the roofs of St Pauls on one occasion and Westminster Abbey once or twice - running cables for a company called ELP who do all the light and power for BBC outside broadcasts. I think one of the shows was the Queen Mother's funeral - I can't remember.
One thing you might have missed is that there is an old tradition of workers up there scratching their names and dates into the walls. Colleagues of mine did it and also I saw stuff like "Ethelbert waz here 1767" !!
Just wonderful!
Very nice tour. Thank you!😃
Southwark Cathedral was one of the first sites to see on our first of multiple visits to London and so it remains a favorite spot of ours to this day. Quite jealous of your visit up to the bells, dust and all.
What a fantastic tour of what looks like a very beautiful building! I'm surprised the view from the tower isnt more popular!
In a few days i will hopefuly be heading up the tower on my local parish church and doing a little research show that the similarities between my little parish church and Southwark cathedral are quite amazing! Leigh parish church is dedicated to St.Mary the virgin, the former dedication of Southwark cathedral! It also has a large Brass chandelier (albiet a slightly younger 18th century one) which hangs under the tower, and said tower is of late medieval construction whilst the nave is a 19th century re-build, like southwark!
I'll admit the parish church is a little smaller! seating only 710 compared to around 800 i belive in Southwark cathedral, and the cathedral looks to be a much bigger building!
Thankyou for this fascinating look into a fascinating building that i doubt i'd have the chance to see in person! :)
So wonderful
Rest in peace, Doorkins!
I clicked on this video because I saw Vicki's face on the thumbnail. Always a pleasure to listen to...
Geoff looks different in this one...
oof
i understood that
You got there before me 😑😏
In Lincoln Cathedral, one guide referred to that type of tour as the Heineken Tour - it reaches the parts other tours don't. :) Great video and next time I'm down in London I'll make an effort to visit.
FINALLY an interesting, well-produced video on Londonist again! Geoff's back... with Vicky! 🤗
Much memories my primary school always went to this church on trips and it is a very nice church
Nice to see you doing videos cheers 👍
Excellent stuff, Vicki, a bijou delight ( cats notwithstanding ).
Looking forward to meeting Hodge and playing on the grand piano.
fab as ever!!
I just watched this for the lovely/bright/charming Vicky (love your hair here, BTW). Yeah, yeah, I know...naughty me.
Wow!
Adorable little cat
My wife and I visited a few days before you recorded.
I am going to Southwark and I might go inside and have a look
Definitely do - shame the Shakespeare window wasn't featured - worth a look and buy the card that gives the answers! Coffee shop worth a visit too.
Nice!
'Dawkins' - is that a deliberately ironic name for a cat that lives in a cathedral?
Probably.
That's what I thought too. lol :)
Doorkins is the cat's name.
Perhaps the name has evolved...
Lovely video Vicki. I must go and have a look for myself but I doubt they'll let me on the roof. Perhaps if I tell them that you sent me.....
Nice one...! And Dawkins is a great name for any cat...
💙💙💙
i will love go to see london city southwark cathedral
Vicki is the best!
can u perhaps do all the museums in London??
All of them?!
I didnt realise it was so big
I went onto the roof of Southwark cathedral a few years ago and remember having a snowball fight with my mum on the roof!
I wish there had been more about the cat ;-)
Vicky looks the same in this one...
Geoff looks different, though.....
"don't forget to look up..." - and on airports, don't forget to regularily look to the left side where the shops aren't placed... You see some other things there...
I don't think that Charles Dickens was actually a bell ringer, but he did visit the Cathedral bell ringers at one point and recorded his experience, hence the quotes on the wall.
Maybe Vicki is the new Dickens?
No mention of the memorial for the Marchioness disaster?
Plus a cameo appearance from an authentic 16th century Henry hoover.
i am a bellringer and I have rung there!
Trainboy375 I also am a ringer. Still have not rung at the Cathedral.
the tenor weighs 48cwt and is in Bb
Vicki I know that around the cathedral there were several spots used in the Harry Potter films. Did the Cathedral itself take part in any of the filmings? I know if anyone would know it would be you as you are a great fan of HP!
Did you know that The Slipper and the Rose was filmed here?
You can buy a picture of the Shakespeare window with the answers on the back.
3.55 - Guest appearance by Henry Hoover.
Ugh I hate that guy, he really sucks
@@MianCowell - it looked like it was just gathering dust to me.
Remember that Dr. Who episode?
Why they not show you what is under the Cathedral!?
Same as most places with decent history not for us to know or see....
THANKS FOR THE TOUR!
Ciao Vicky!
Vicki, were you able to pet the cat?
The day after the death of Dolores O'Riordan in 2018, I went to Southwark Cathedral and lit a candle.
Did Geoff When you to Southwark Cathedral
Top quality video. ( audio - not so much .... )
squee!! dawkins is cute!!
Sky garden Vicky?
The crown is more powerful than the church outside the church -- but not inside where you can take refuge -- the exception being Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury 1162-1170.
Will no-one rid me of this turbulent priest?
And Becket responded in typical London style with an ecclesiastical version of "Come an' 'ave a go if yer fink yer 'ard enuff!".
You can take a Priest out of London, but you didn't take the Londoner out of the priest!
Where's Geoff???
I was told on my first day of uni to look up... I’m a history graduate
I went in here
Vicki Explores Southwark Cathedral
Vicki is cute
Vicky is so nice
She's got the style of my 70 year old teacher. Lol
when i was courier and saw southwark cathedral i thought the place was a tardis
00:18 A bit strange to ask someone to explain something and then place a voice over on it. Explain @Londonist
Geoff looks different in this one.
We miss Vicki.
The short period of time it was the tallest building in London wasn't because all the taller buildings burnt down in the great fire ..... Or was it?
@01:07 101 leopards followed by a cat @05:07
When is Londonist doing Isle of Wight cathedrals?
Felt awkward that Vicky asked what the Ruth did then just did a voiceover.
Agreed
It's not as tall as St Paul's or Old St Paul's, so I guess it was the tallest building for a few decades after Old St Paul's burnt down in the Great Fire of London and before it was rebuilt by Wren.
ua-cam.com/video/Ziflh7al8Yk/v-deo.html - covers the topic in more detail. But yes, the fire.
Londonist - in a similar vein ask the Railway Mission about their work - www.railwaymission.org/. That would make a very interesting video I think.
More London churches please
The Cathedral cat is named "Dawkins"? :)
Remember, cats were once worshiped as Gods, and the cats have NEVER forgotten that! ;)
That's because she's Cat-holic.
A little disappointed with the all to brief appearance of the cat, would loved to have seen more, otherwise a great video.
Vicki looks different in this video
i got u all again
Why isn’t Ruth allowed to speak?
The crown is above the Church of England but not the True Church which is the only Church founded by our Lord Jesus Christ - The Catholic Church.
Trying to work out why a Cathedral would name its cat after a well known evangelising atheist? ???
I prefer Vicky with shorter hair. Now looks older.
You dont care about Truth or God at all cathedral means throne why do you think people can sit on throne?fish God croen more important than church.tradition s of man nebo is babylonion god..Jesus hassa what does Jesus have to do with bells.may be you could try resding bible and listening to shofar girl.youll see if peoples restimonies sre true.if you read scripture ask Lord.i hate way people promote things that lead people to hell.
