@@mrfrenly Yes, I think that the first half of the movie was the weakest. It felt like a lot was cut out in post-production. I think Paul and Chani's romance and Paul's journey into becoming a Fremen was rushed/underdeveloped. They could've allocated an extra 15 minutes to that bit. They used a montage of Fremen guerilla attacks against Harkonnen spice harvesters to show the passage of time but it didn't feel organic. Right after that montage ended, there's a scene where Fremen blow up a Harkonnen spice reserve on Arrakis and an enraged Rabban leads a squadron to eliminate Muad'dib. That scene came out of nowhere. We weren't even shown how Paul's alter ego, Muad'dib garnered the attention of the Harkonnens for them to lead an operation against him. A discussion between the Baron and Rabban about the increasing religious fervor amongst the Fremen before Rabban's operation against Muad'dib would've given more gravitas to Rabban's very impulsive actions. There's also a problem of abrupt cuts in this movie which I think most certainly has to do with deleted scenes. There's also deleted scenes including that of Thufir Hawat (even though he's not in the movie, he was spotted in promotional material of part two which proves that his scenes were cut) and Count Hasimir Fenring (played Tim Blake Nelson probably since the actor talked about his role being cut too). All in all, this is an 8.5/10 movie in my opinion that could be elevated to a rating of 9.5 with the addition of certain deleted scenes.
Opening with Princess Irulan’s monologue was a great choice, catches the audience up and has the incredibly tragic Atreides motif. Love “And the emperor said…nothing” Then we get the perfect opening action sequence with the STUNNING orange color grade. So many shots from this sequence are etched into my brain. When the intense drums come in at 3:15, it shakes the theater and immediately sets the tone. Also when the harkonen soldiers “climb” at 4:12, just jaw-dropping cinema. I am not a huge fan of LOTR and in all honesty, this movie like LOTR was pretty rushed and watered down compared to the books.
