  • Sid Meier's Colonization - The problem with video games that have a historic setting is that there will always be people more comfortable with pretending it never happened, or being offended by it, rather than accepting it for what it was, and learning from it.

    The baffling idea so many seem to hold about the past is that colonization like slavery was something that happens in history. … it didn’t.
    It’s WAY older then history. Both slavery and colonization are human behaviours that predate ANY recorded history …

    Colonization is one of the best 4x games ever, still to this day. The way you perfect your industry while at same time deal with indians, hostile neighbors and eventual invasion is truly magnificent.
    11:00 I'm disappointed that you did not include that every atrocity gives you minus to final score, quite a lot if you ravage every single tribe.

    There are some details that are just so plain wrong that I wonder if you ever played the game or if you did so 25 years ago.
    Founding fathers work like world wonders in Civ. You get them through Liberty Bells, which also increase independence sentiment.
    The Spanish get a bonus to attack native settlements, not digging up forbidden sites.
    The tiers of craftsmen are wrong. There are no normal/expert/master carpenters, rather you get: petty criminals (lowest productivity overall), Indentured servants (standard productivity in fields, less in shops), Native converts (bonus to field productivity, bad in shops), free colonists (standard productivity), and expert/master craftsmen (huge bonus productivity in their specialization).

    It is worth mentioning that the Windows 3.1 version (Colonization for Windows) (which also runs on Win95 btw) does not have the "Combat Streak Bug", therefore making it the best version to seek out actually.

    personally, i think this a pretty bad review. First, the "recording" doesn't show real gameplay but just nonsense clicking around. Then all that "some people are offended by killing indians" WTF i mean..it's history here...so much blabla seriously...explain the founding fathers with bonuses, do not tell people that there are "master" and "expert carpenters" (there is just one speciality type).. i mean, you could have so much talked about the gameplay itself

    I don't know if I'd say the game is totally consequence-free if you act like a genocidal conquistador. Despite Spain getting a 50% combat bonus toward natives (based on the history of the conquistadores) they and all other factions still get a significant penalty for every settlement you burn, which deducts from your final score. Upsetting them also backfires during the War of Independence, where your mother country will conscript their help fighting you and you'll have both your mother country's elite forces and armed natives to fight the entire war. The game did get some criticism even on release however for whitewashing slavery. Yes, there's Indentured Servitude, Criminal Labor, etc. which were prevalent in the New World IRL, and even the ability to "convert the natives" by building Spanish Missions in their settlements and making them into colonists, but African slavery is omitted entirely because even in 1994 MicroProse felt that REALLY wouldn't fly. Of course, that was sacrificing historical accuracy for political correctness. I actually loved this game as a kid because I was fascinated with the colonial period in school and wanted to play a simulator that got me right there in the period. I wouldn't say the game's necessarily glorifying the atrocities committed by Europeans, I think if they removed the ability to do anything bad to the natives (or removing their existence entirely) it would be much worse for pretending they didn't exist.

    • @IsmailofeRegime
      @IsmailofeRegime 4 місяці тому

      Nowadays I'd like to think omitting African slavery would create a much bigger furor than acting as if it didn't exist, although you'd probably also get far more outcry against the very idea of the game existing, thus making a remake or sequel less likely.

    • @Morphinem
      @Morphinem 3 місяці тому

      @@IsmailofeRegime Remake exists (2008). Mod version of remakes exists (2024). Slavery is fully included now, like Piracy, servants and even racial distinctions (you know the name of a mix native-EU ?).

    • @IsmailofeRegime
      @IsmailofeRegime 3 місяці тому

      @@Morphinem I'm well aware of the remake as well as mods which add slavery and other "problematic" content. I don't see how that changes what I said: a big-name game studio making a new Colonization game in 2024 is likely to draw greater criticism compared to 2008 or 1994, and this makes a sequel or remake less likely.

  • @Morphinem
    @Morphinem 3 місяці тому

    The 1994 MS-DOS game IS NOT DEAD. Yes Civilization IV - Colonization, the 2008 remake, was BAD but now, after all this time, we got something close to perfection. We The People 4.1 (2024), best mod for Civilization IV - Colonization.
    Jump from 20 to 99 ressources, with all buildings/professions associated, new core concepts for colony management like healthcare/culture/law/happiness. Tons of events during your play forcing you to make choices all the time. You can now build a very complex economic system and automate it. New victory conditions for different gameplay. New leaders of course, new tactics. New military or civilian units/chips. So many things I don't remember anymore. Piracy, slavery, all aspects are deeper and more respectful to history rather than political correctness ! You can have famous actresses or dedicated "sex workers" to raise happiness in your colony. You can go FULL slavery if you want, and can maintain order or compensate happiness "issues". Nothing is free.
    Total different game and most of all : correctly balanced like the MS-DOS version was originally, but without exploits/limitations and serious tactical/realistic gameplay. Like you can't have an infinite number of troops/ships in a colony. There is a limitation depending on the level of your port (logic).
    Try it for nostalgia or else, the community is active (forums/discord) and ready to help. Installation is fairly simple (copy/paste).
    It's just astonishing to see this old idea, this old excellent game completely alive and better than ever ! A pure gem for any 4X gamer.

    Civilization itself isn't really any better in my opinion, because behind all the abstraction bad stuff is happening. You're never told about it, but assuming it is a real world we're playing in then it is happening.
    In fact I'd consider Civ worse in some ways because it hides all the nasty stuff much better. You rarely feel like the bad guy for conquering everything, actually I'd go as far as to say that you feel like a winner.
    (EDIT) in addition some rulers in Civ were pretty nasty, especially in older games. So you would feel like a winner conquering the world as Stalin. Try saying that last sentence out loud in eastern Europe and see how it goes. Though the more recent games also have their share of unpleasant folk.

    The game is heavily weighted to destroying the natives to get their gold early on (get Cortes as a FF) before the crowns taxes escalate and you can get some good colonies.
    I've played it a number of times and found that cooperation with native tribes is tedious and doesn't have a similar payoff to winning the game as just all out attack early on.

    I know people criticized this game for omitting slavery. I can see where they’re coming from, but do these people not see how it would make the game 100 times worse if it included slavery?
    I think a game where you can buy slaves and put them to work would get Sid Meier sued by the NAACP and the ADL.

    • @Morphinem
      @Morphinem 3 місяці тому

      How do you explain then the current Civilization IV - Colonization 2008 game with the Mod WtP 4.1 (2024) ? Slavery is completely included (full package) : you can buy slaves in Africa, transport them with slave ships, put them at work, and even use specific new professions to increase their productivity or prevent revolts. It's totally optional but the gameplay is possible. And balanced (too many slaves = more productivity but less happiness, limiting then the colony pop, preventing continuous growth). So it's actually pretty fun to play with slaves and historically accurate. It's a game heavily modded and so far nobody said anything about it.
      It was in 1994. We're in 2024, and I'm pretty sure slavery is less popular now than before...

    I don't think political corectness in a historical game is imporyant; it's a more accurate portrayal, it can be a conversation starter, and it can be fun gameplaywise. In games with modern settings, it can be problematic because it can influence how we act in the modern world, but I don't think this game will motivate anyone to take up arms and force native americans to plow tobacco fields. I would bet at least 90% of strategy gamers have, at some point, commited an in-game warcrime, but less than 1% have participated in real-life warcrimes.

    The controversy from simulating what is essentially a genocidal trauma is pretty understandable. I dunno why some gamers clutch their pearls about this.
    People seem to take criticism of art to mean censorship when maybe they should just get a little less defensive and be open to dialogue. Maybe there is something problematic about x or y and It's perfectly fine to explore that.

      Old post but I thought I would say
      Its not gamers clutching their pearls over criticism, it's people telling you that its not good criticism.
      If colonization did not simulate parts of "genocidal trauma" as you put it, people would be upset about whitewashing and revising history. Ignoring the bad parts in favour of the good.
      If they do simulate it, people are upset that people are simulating "genocidal trauma"
      There is nothing a game developer can do with this criticism, hence it is bad criticism. Nothing constructive can be done with it. No matter what the developers did there would be critics.
