    To say that the optics rehousing company, IronGlass, based out of Ukraine, has had a wild ride over the past few years would be an understatement. The company found early success with their MKI rehousing project based on taking old Soviet optics and rehousing them for cinema uses. Now, their MKII housings are shipping, and IronGlass is branching into another legendary line of vintage optics: Carl Zeiss Jena. Hop on for more of Graham's thoughts on the MKII line from IronGlass.

    You forgot to mention in your little history that the Helios lenses were manufactured at KMZ Krasnogorsky Zavod, near Moscow, Rússia. From Portugal with love.

    I refurbished and rehousehelios lenses in an enthusiast way. I just sold three anamorphic fakes to hobbyist coworkers here at Sony. Ironglass is so much better

    They are from a country currently at war with a super power and have an uncertain future. Not sure how this is not cause for concern. What if they get destroyed?

      Honestly the conflict part was a concern for me initially, but the easy and quick communication for the Ironglass team quickly assuaged any fears I might have. They are doing great work under difficult circumstances.

    Why no actual test footage?

      I answer this right at the top! Some of the most popular optics in history from a vintage look perspective. So, I focus on other aspects like rehousing build quality and order process.

    The quality of ironglass “cine mod” lenses are not good. I have two of them, both has problems. Broken screws, kind of wobble, etc. They recommend buy rehousing lens, but I don’t think so. At least if they want to sell it, they shouldn’t think about selling it at this quality. Of course, my cases may be a special. But I don’t think will buy ironglass cine mod lens anymore. They contain all the problem a vintage lens would have. Important things, we can’t choose the condition of the lenses. So if you want a high quality product, the “cine mod” lens will not fit.
    I realized by buying some more vintage lenses. When I bought these guys, I knew you shouldn't expect anything above a certain level. After looking at and thinking about it from this perspective, I felt at ease. And I'm having a happy time with the vintage lenses I have. 🤌
    I can't buy a rehousing lens because I'm on a budget right now, but I'd like to try it out.

    I don't get the "hype" tbh

      Just great rehousing work from a solid company. Not trying to hype anything :) It’s just been a positive experience for me interacting with them!

    Not worth the price , better off buying two of the lens's and mod them yourself and see which is cleaner, this is ridiculous and reminds me that projects like Magiclantern help make insane price grabs like this look like the inflated price gates they are, a waste of money to price gate film/cinema/home directors/content creators from getting access to good lenses.
    Stick with the OG stuff

      if you're doing smaller projects you absolutely do not need these. but if you're on a shoot with a budget and a crew you and want this look, these offer consistency and reliability. holding up the shoot because your old lenses arent working with the focus motor won't get your more gigs.

      I think these are not for you. These are for the people who rent, or have serious productions and want that look. Also who puts value on local european craftsmanship. If you're a small indie studio, and most of your projects are not that well paid and you're not an enthusiast, you can work pretty well with the classic vintage lenses without rehousing. You can better concentrate on other things online, not critique stuff you don't afford just because you don't understand their value. It's easier for everybody.

    4 grand per lens..... come on now....... you can buy Arles or Athenas... much better option. Or just buy the original ones and use without the reehousing. Money can be spent in better ways for indie filmmakers....

    • @dualtrx
      @dualtrx 7 днів тому +1

      i thought indie film makers can't afford 4k lenses... you better go rent, or use vintage classic glass. I'm 100% these are not for indie film makers, but for rental houses and serious enthusiasts who want that specific look in a good housing to match a set. You're not in the target as a customer for this item.

    • @americantrollfilm
      @americantrollfilm 2 дні тому

      @@dualtrx lthe only thing those lenses match is the rehousing. :) I can be in any target i need to be for any specific project. All goode.
