Life too short for long UA-cam videos? See the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ timings below.
We get asked lots of questions about delay pedals and how to use them creatively, so in this video we show you 10 cool things you can do with… yep… delay pedals.
It’s important to note that not all delay pedals will do all of these things. For example, Thing 5 - Changing The Sound Of Repeats -requires a pedal that has the ability to do that. Many modern multifunction / programmable delays from the likes of Strymon, Boss and so on have these features, as of course do the examples we use in the video. If nothing else, it might serve as a guide to what you might actually need or not need when choosing a new delay pedal because heaven knows that are so many on the market!
We do not cover stereo delays in this video - it’s a much less common application for most people and requires a deeper dive at some point.
Anyhoo, enough yakkin’ from me Mick here - let’s get on with the show. Enjoy…

I don't think Mick gets enough credit for the descriptions of these videos lol. Always very informative and complimentary to the video content, thanks for the effort you you put into it man. Also, planning to make a trip across the pond (from the US) to Europe soon, would love to grab some beers with you two and pick your brains for an evening if time permits. Cheers!
Love it how our country cousins think we all live in one little rural village together. Just drop in for scones and tea....lol
+David S Comparatively speaking, we do all live in one little rural village. Driving down the length of the country for us is akin to driving one side of a large city to the other in some parts of the States - the scales are quite dramatic, so wherever the lads are they won't seem 'that' far away. xD
@@Steeve9292 I don't know what constitutes a "long" drive for you guys over there, cause like in the States I'm in Oklahoma and to get to like, Colorado, It's a good 10+ hour drive, but that isn't that bad compared to like driving to California which would be like a 21 hour drive.
Well, considering GB is 838 miles by road from furthest tip to tip-that’s totally doable in a 12-13 hour drive. And trust me, here in Alaska I can drive from Fairbanks to Homer which takes about 12 hours and is almost the same distance. And that’s still in one state and not even to the border of Canada 😂
@@johnester8421 I'm in OKC... Moved here from Houston Texas. I could drive to Florida in less time than it takes to get to el passo. Oklahoma seems so much smaller to me than you I'm Guessing. On top of that, my wife is from Connecticut, which is barely bigger than the city of Houston. I would have to remind her that driving from one side of the city to the other is like driving across Connecticut.
The “noise” at the end was one of my favorite sounds on the show. Why am I like this
To be fair, it was epic as fuck
Maaan. Now I gotta figure out how to justify a JC40 as my new “chorus” pedal. Y’all are brutal.
Yup this happened to me..
mick: “which is why a tap tempo function of the delay is useful ‘cause you can just tap it in with your foot.”
dan: “really handy.”
...actually, really footy.
I knew I could count on you gents to explain it all with practical examples. Seek and ye shall find TPS.
You guys make the world a better place and man caves a paradise. Thank you.
FANTASTIC fantastic fantastic episode! Sorry to repeat myself. ;-)
No modulation on those repeats? 😁
that's okay that's ok that's tha t
I've been looking everywhere for something like this. Amazingly, there's no course or extended tutorials around this theme, it's really helped fill in the gaps. I really like the way you guys go a bit deeper on things, thanks for sharing your ideas and banter always entertaining!
It’s episodes like this where Dan’s playing ability really shines through. Excellent and informative show lads!
Please, if anyone knows, what is the riff that he plays at 4:00 ? I have heard a similar one before and cannot recollect, and it is too short to shazam.
Troll gag I believe he is playing Run to you by Brian Adams
@@VeroniqueMystique Thank you kind ma'am. I appreciate it. It brought back so many memories that I cherish. Thank you.
This is incredible guys. Almost back to your roots in the informative “classroom”-like style, but in a way that perfectly blends where the show started with what it has become. This is the natural evolution of your show, and it’s magnificent. The genre of video you guys have created, built, and nurtured is very special, as evidenced by the massive fan base you now have.
AKA 👍
When Mick threw on the chorus from the JC-40 and Dan played that Alex Lifeson chord. Beautiful.
A show on the different Rats would be awesome, and also include alternatives like the T-Rex Mudhoney. Love the show!
If you do the Rats do not miss the Ananashead DS308. The circuit board is quite literally a part for part NOS replica of the fabled 'Big Box Rat'. Not only does it sound killer it is only $90.00 USD It is the Rat to die for. Killer!!!
🐀👍🏼 Rats indeed rule and have a lot of history! Chicago Stompworks Mr. Vermin is spot on to my whiteface 94'....
and the 1981!
Awesome gents. Keep those great shows coming.
Two ideas for future episodes:
1- Ear protection
2- In Ear Monitors
Different topics but very important; especially the first one.
Agreed. Long-time loud guitarists tend to destroy their hearing, like Paul Gilbert, Ted Nugent, Pete Townsend, etc.
@@davelanciani-dimaensionx Although he's best known for different genres, Beethoven's hearing loss was due to extended practice time with a cranked Hiwatt.
Another magic show guys! We gotta get y'all some more subscribers! Just watched a video of a guy building a hut in the woods...all alone, primitive tools, no talking, but still had 3 million subscribers!!! What?! TPS deserves way more than that!
What perfect timing for this video!! I just got a Walrus Audio ARP-87 for Christmas! Also, awesome vid as always guys, cheers 👍
9legolas7 what’s the thoughts on arp? Compared to any previous delay pedals you used
Woooow! The oscillation at the end was pure magic, awesome!
Mick and Dan work so well together their videos. So informative and to the point. Absolute pleasure to watch!!
Thank you for another year of great content! Your success is well deserved.
The work you put into these shows really pays off - I know when you're inside something it never quite looks the same, but from this perspective you chaps have built something truly superb and endlessly enjoyable.
Here's to a ear-ringing 2019!
Amazing demonstration guys! Loved it! Learned a thing or two as well. Cheers!
My Favorite way to address #5 (change sound of Repeats) is with my Rubberneck by DOD - it has an FX loop - and the first thing I did when I got it was put a pitch shift effect in the loop...what a cool thing! Instant arpeggiator..Each repeat is one octave higher than the last, and it sounds so neat. I only got these pedals a week before CHristmas and I’ve been geeking out on the sound of it since. Also - My favorite thing to do with delay is take the ideas for #4, (use multiple delays) and I put them in different amps. You get a great spread of rhythmic sound. Awesome.
For “Where The Streets Have No Name” Edge has 2 SDD-3000’s going. One in 1/4 note mixed quite low with longer feedback. The other is dotted 1/8 mixed quite higher but with less feedback. The Diamond Counter Point Delay actually has a setting for this called “galloping eighths” I believe. Also worth noting, with 2 delays setup like Edge, the modulation sounds much bigger and wider even with depth and rate set relatively low due to the 2 delays interacting with each other.
Splendid Video, Truly amazing! One of the most informative Ive witnessed.....Cheers
Wow, for a show with delay................., you where right on time!!!!
Wish you the best for the new year in good health and fortune.
Cheers!!
You guys echoed my feelings exactly - great video!
A quick note of thanks for all you do. Have a great new year.
I’m sure you guys are aware, but ChaseBliss Audio’s Thermae is a bucket brigade delay that changes delay time in a very controlled and manipulative manner in order to shift pitch! It also uses a resonant low pass filter in place of a repeats tone control, which can sound really cool!
The false octave set up with a expression pedal for control is the tip I picked up this time around. Thanks!
The extremely short delay time you did for the Cuts Like A Knife riff is just my favourite thing! Whenever I've been playing rhythm parts in a band, while the other guitar player is doing a solo, I just kick in the delay, and it almost works as a doubler or something similar. Really fattens up the tone! Love it!
Thanks for giving me some new ideas for my Flight Time!
Delay makes so much more sense to me now. Thanks guys! Love your vids!
As per always, y’all are an invaluable resource for showing the world the possibilities.
Loving the constantly growing amp collection! I love the super short delay trick, especially in wet/dry! One of the coolest rock solo sounds I've ever heard or played.
Mr. Daniel, love the playing in the intro. Love delays!!!
Ah, that’s very kind, thank you :)
great show guys learnt loads of new things about Delays I didn't know before!
Thank you thank you thank you!! Brilliant show - delay pedals and a Roland JC 😁😁 great set up, guitars and playing - it’s just sonic heaven!!! Keep up the amazing work guys
Hello Guys! Thank you for bring delays to a practical context. I got a DD 500 boss, and pretty much most of all combinations you showed can be programed in all details. Nice show!
That was really informative and loads of fun. Thanks
Ahhh I was just messing with slap back on my flashback 2 and this videos comes up. Awesome!
Now I’m waiting for pt 2 on Mick’s strat journey
This is a fantastic update to the previous episodes about delay. Funny timing since I have been watching those and debating on adding a second delay. Also I agree with the other commenters about doing this for other types of pedals like tremolo, phaser and chorus. Keep up the great content. Thank you guys.
This is one of my favourite of your recent videos. I've never really been much of a delay user but I'm inspired to go and play more with my Seymour Duncan Vapor Trails, especially the modulation on the tails! Thanks!
I’m traveling right now, first trip to Europe, and, much to the annoyance of my significant other, still feel compelled to watch That Pedal Show. I can’t help it. I love this show! I can’t wait to get home and explore all these cool delay ideas.
Best tps video in a long while, entertaining and inspiring. Thanks and keep up the good work
Great video idea guys. I've become set in my ways with delay & need some new ideas. I use the Echoplex EP-1 tape delay, straight into my Marshall. Beautiful sound.
When Dan set the Free The Tone tempo to the delays of the Bellepoch It was like a light bulb moment. I reckon you could get a ton of really interesting tones from that sorta play between the pedals
Has to be one of the best editions , informative and nicely put together. Shoegaze heaven! Maybe take it to the next level with stacking 3 or more delay and reverb pedals.
You really inspired me to play around with my delay! I'd love to listen what you mentioned about putting a slow flanger into the loop of a delay that allows it !
17:15 the reason why I'm saving up for D&M pedal.
PS that was one of the best episodes ever. truly thank you.
Oops, Off topic. When you were saying last week how you don’t like Fender’s maple fingerboards Mick, it reminded me that you gave me pause for thought a couple of months ago.
When Fender brought out their Player series earlier this year, the butterscotch Telecaster caught my eye, so I went to try one out and found it to be a canny buy except for the awful gloop on the fingerboard. However, remembering you said some while ago that you scraped the lacquer off your white maple Strat, I bit the bullet and bought it.
Over the next four days, using scraper blades, I took the fretboard down to the wood then treated it with Tung oil. Honestly, the difference is amazing and even though it is a “budget” Fender, it feels and plays great. I can’t walk past it without picking it up for a plonk. Thanks for that Mick. TPS inspires in all different ways.
Oh, and here's to a happy and successful Noo Year!
Shouldn't you be in Queensryche :) or is it the wrong one!!!
I've read that some people don't go that far, and just use steel wool as you would on rosewood, something you normally don't do on finish, to make it less sitcky. I personally love poly on everything though :)
@@markdaisley6958 Mark, can you imagine how many 'friend' requests I get from Facebookers!
The treated maple finish is key to the sound. Stripping it off then you might as well have a rosewood.
@@davids9192 Cheers David. Disagree tho', it's the Maple that makes the difference, not the finish. I have had 3 rosewood Telecasters over the many years of my life and the two woods have totally different tonal characteristics, which is why I was tempted to check out the Player in the first place. This of course is only my view. Thanks for the comment though. Discussion is good.
Best video in ages. Super useful and easy to follow. Great work!
This is great content! This type of show is perfect for what stage of player I am. I would love to have this type of instruction for each of the pedal families. It would also be extremely beneficial to have these listed under one library.
Perfect timing. I got my flashback 2 last night. Was wondering what you all had to say on delays
Great show! I love playing around with my volume pedals and expression pedal into my DD-7 with another old tape echo unit running. Discovered a few new things here. Cheers lads.
Great episode guys, love it. You are soley responsible for my massive costs into a wet/dry rig.
No question just a big thanks... all the best for the new year...
just got the dod rubberneck, cant wait to try these out!
That was awesome. Loved the ending.
Great stuff as always, gents! Very useful concepts. 👍🏻
Another great lesson learnt , thanks
Great end to another GREAT episode! Thanks guys! You're awesome!
Nice vid guys! To my ears the really short delay with gain is like double tracking gainy guitars to bring them out in a recording. Have a great new year!
i saw a meme today that said Australians are just British Texans. I thought Dan might get a kick out of that. Great show guy's, love every episode. Cheers.
Great thing about delay's is you can basically jam with yourself when using the longer delay settings...makes for some really creative and inspirational sessions! Thanks guys, another great show!
Mick!! I love it when you play that thumb finger Chet Atkin style! Amazing!
Awesome swell technique!
I have el cap with favorite switch, there's a slapback on a preset, and whatever long delay in stock, pedal is always on. Huge love for slapback.
Good topic! I was just playing with my El Cap on the “multi” setting enjoying some sounds I don’t usually use in my normal playing. :)
Fanastic video! So much good stuff here!
Nailed the finish!
Another extremely useful video! Thanks guys!
Great tones in this episode! I’m inspired to go tweak more on shorter delay times.
Any video that features Dan and Mick getting to play modulated delay is going to be a winner in my book! Cheers and Happy New Year! I really have learned a lot from each of these videos and greatly appreciate the time and effort that you and your crew put into these episodes. Some folks had Cheers, others Seinfeld, me? I have That Pedal Show. Looking forward to an even better 2019.
I really enjoyed this one guys! There was a moment where you talked about ambient guitar and Dan demonstrated it a little bit. Have you thought about doing a show on ambient guitar techniques? It's a little daunting to get the right mixture of drones, swells, and volume.
Late to the party as ever, I loved their episode of TPS. I’m a long time lover of echo and delay, but truth be told, I’m not very good at using it. I’m a bit better at it having watched this show.
What I’m particularly grateful for is the advice on using short delay times, from Slapback on down. I’m finding new inspiration in these tones and for that I’m forever grateful.
I’d welcome more of the same for all other effects, particularly Tremolo & Compression.
Keep up the outstanding work chaps.
Happy New Year!!!!
When Dan said "Belle Epoch", It sounded, to my ears, like he had a new delay pedal called the "Belly Flop". If I made pedals, I would not delay in getting started on the Belly Flop, version 1.
Brilliant!
Lovin' the solid state! ❤
OK. Now you're costing me money. I've just ordered another delay I can use on solos. That very short delay time thing is sooo coool! I ordered the new pedal as I kept listening to the show. Can't wait to see how it turns out! Thank you! Astoundingly useful information.
One of the best episodes ever. Love these "tips and tricks" videos; I personally find them more useful than the "compare all these high-end amps/pedals" vids. More please!
You had Matt Schofield on quite awhile back and he mentioned that he uses 2 delay pedals. The first (very short) to fatten his tone and the second for everything else. I decided I would go that way immediately. Excellent stuff!
Really useful episode thanks. Glad to see the love you give the Belle Epoch. You guys turned me onto it when you did a show on tape delay (I think!) and I recently got one. It's perfect for me with the modulation and rec level dials at 9/10 o'clock. Beautifully natural
Good morning gentlemen! I'll be off work soon, home for the weekend. I'll start it off with a great TPS and cocoa. I may even finish wiring in my pedal board. Lots of GigRig power distribution goodness!
I remember falling in love with delay about 30 years ago. I was running sound for a pretty good local band. I saved up and bought a Peavey Mark IV 24 channel board and a Roland SDE-1000. I wore that thing out.
Inspiring show, guys! Got me excited to go plug in and make wonderful noise, which is high praise indeed- many thanks for the work you do, I’ll keep watching- in between buying myself new pedals I realize I’m unable to live without, that is, haha...
Lads. Love delays. Love TPS. Happy times.
Dan just very briefly touched (33:54) on a very important use of the delay that is to color your sound. That deserves to have its own category (category number 11). You mentioned the Echorec, but what about the Korg SDD-3000. The SDD-3000 is an awesome pedal (that you should bring up one of these days) which is the favorite of such sonic masters as: The Edge, Daniel Lanois and Dan’s buddy, Mr. Ed O’Brien from Radiohead. It does an awesome delay and makes you sound better and cut through the mix.
Keep up the great work and bring the SDD to the show one of these days.
I first learned the dotted eighth tricks from the late great Bobbe Seymour. Pedal Steel player and Nashville record producer from the golden era of Country Music. Not sure if Albert Lee was doing it before the steel players or not. Albert was also a great innovator and has been around a longtime. In pedal steel we call that the 'two for one'. We set the repeats for just one repeat. The volume pedal has to be behind the delay because you have to kill the last repeat for your phrases to end right. Do it right while sitting at the steel people think you are a speed picking demon and you are playing relatively slow. LOL. Its pretty cool that in the states a lot of effect pedal developments guitarist use were actually introduced to Nashville by steel players.
Just got a Red Panda Tensor because of the Devin Townsend vid!! Thanks gents!
Great video, I’ll be rewatching it again once my new pedal comes in because as it so happens, I just bought my first delay! It’s a Strymon Time Line. Free the Tone just seemed too complex and exhausting to program. I was surprised when it made it’s way onto Mick’s board but alas, I felt a simpler route was necessary for me. You guys always have great videos and I wouldn’t know what to do without you.
Seems the empress echo system will cover all these tips in one units. Thank you Dan and Mick!
Another great and informative video, time after time, after time.....Hope you had a merry Christmas and looking forward to what the new year has in store for TPS! Cheers guys!
Great topic , fantastic guys.
when you set the FTT to short delay (20-33 ms). That Tone was killer. what a lovely fattening agent! I am rewatching this entire episode with a pen and paper to make notes. Thanks Guys!
Great stuff guys - very informative :) Many thanks :)
Love the decibel meter!
That was like trip back in time to very episodes. Lots fun and great tips. Happy New Years boys.
Currently using a Belle Epoch Deluxe and Korg SDD-3000, it is amazing!
Tried phase 90 before overdrive! Amazing! Thanks for advice! Try Tumnus into OCD! Epic!
Yup for Phase before OD. Swirly dirty goodness.
This is fantastic with headphones. I just want to send all of my delay pedals to Dan and Mick to see what kind of sounds they can come up with
Jesus that ending was epic.
Can i just thank you guys, you inspired me to nab an old practice amp off my brother so i'm now running my own Wet/Dry setup in the comfort of my own home using 10 and 20 watt amps using the output split from my UX1 with the tone paths split left and right with the delay and modulation only going to a single amp and the sound that fills the room is immense.
I can't stop giggling.
hope you guys had a great Christmas and have a happy new year!
That’s awesome Stu, thanks so much :)
Took me 30 minutes to realize you were saying Belle Epoch rather than belly pot! Lol
I was gonna mention this too!
I thought it was Belly Pork. I went and had a bacon sandwich half way through. lol
I still hear belly flop.
i now tune my gt-5 while watching you(s) guys show! CHEERS!
Great show as usual!!! Your pedalboard show with Matt Schofield in JUL 2017 was the first time I conceptualized use of the very short delay. He described it as "thickening" his tone if memory serves. Then he added a longer delay on top of it. At the time I only owned a carbon copy, I have since added a tape echo and am considering buying a belle epoch deluxe--down the rabbit hole we go. Thank you for expanding on that subject. Great tones and much food for thought.
