As a 70 year old Irishman, who worked in education for a number of years before I retired, I can empathise with Dave Allen on this one. Teaching geometry to kids can be a long process due to the same reasons. One of the finest comedians ever. The flying on aeroplanes story is a scream.
Dave Allen is a Legend. He got a way of telling the stories that makes u feel all sort of way and then WHAM! I like that he also make fun of everybody, including himself.
It's 2024 now and I recently learnt many young people can't read an analogue clock anymore. Dave was a brilliant comedian I grew up with his weekly show on TV as a kid.
God rest him. Dave was, is, and always will be an absolute legend in the world of stand-up comedy. Much loved and missed over here in the UK and Ireland. 🙋♂
Check out his 70's show, 'Dave Allen at Large'....comedy gold (plus a great theme tune). He'd sit on a chair telling funny stories & jokes to the audience, interrupted occasionally by pre-filmed sketches. Favourite sketches are the £10 note stuck under a car wheel & 'who farted in church?'.
I’ll forever remember, I was young, maybe 7 or 8, and was at my aunts for thanksgiving. I knew how to read clocks and everything, but she had an old clock with Roman numerals on it. My mom said to come in from the kids room quarter after. I told her I can’t read the Chinese clock on the wall, and it has been a rolling joke every thanksgiving for like 20 years now😭
Hi from Ireland, Dave's a Dublin legend. Always love to see younger generations in America (and I'm only 39 so he was before my time mostly) discovering the guy.
Can anyone remember learning how to tell the time? I have no memory of it at all. I can't think of a time when I didn't know. (no pun intended) Just one of those things that has always been there, as far as my brain/memory is concerned. Like walking/talking/writing/reading and probably plenty other things that are just in there and it feels like they always have been. Makes me think it is on the parents and teachers rather than the kids for not knowing how to. You wouldn't blame an adult for not being able to read. And you wouldn't mock them for it.
I grew up watching Dave Allen - almost 70yo and he is still one of the best comedians you will ever see in my opinion. Deep well with this guy. Try reacting to Dave on Airplanes next.
I'm in retail. Not too long ago, one of our employees, who is a junior in college, told me she didn't know how to tell time on a clock face. I was stunned.
Just to complicate matters, analogue watches, clocks, that use Roman numerals. Four in Roman numerals, it's IV. But on a clock or a watch it's IIII, fekkin madness.
Both IV and IIII are acceptable to use. But only clocks/watches specifically. The actual Romans never used it for the number 4. There are loads of stories as to why, even one where King Charles V was offended that 1 would be taken away from 5 to make 4, since his title was V. Funny, but doubtful. Likely reason is that it was easier for people to understand. There are examples of VIIII being used as well for 9. But that appears to have fallen out of fashion as it took up too much space on the clock face.

I'm 60, when I was 5, my dad taught me my numbers. As soon as I learned them, I then was shown our only clock in the house, which was on my mom's cook stove. All my dad told me at that point.....that there was a big hand and a little hand. So, if he needed to know the time while he was laying on the sofa in the living room, he would ask me to go look the clock and tell him where the hands were at. It was an easy concept for a 5 year old. Me..."Dad...The big hand is on the 10 and the little hand is on the 7" "Dad..."Thanks...10 more minutes and my show will be on.." lol. If the big hand was between numbers I just told him that, and that was close enough.
Check out Billy Connolly. Dwarf on a bus. Hilarious. I'm a teacher and I'm so glad I only have to teach o'clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past atm.
How I taught? I don't remember. I don't remember how I was taught. I remember my grandparents said five and twenty past and such things. I also remember moving to Denmark where halv to (half two) means a half hour to two, i.e., half past one, and the word for seventy (halvfjerds - used to be halvfjerdsindstyve) means half a score less than four score (firs).
I was taught the time a very odd way, but it worked. I was given a watch, and I wore it, if I asked they told me the time and why, that was it. Over time you asked again and if you got it wrong they tell you again, and why, no associations, not explanation of outside influence, no confusion. You pick it up quick, and don't bother with the ancillary information until you're ready and asking about it. Of course there were no digital watches back then...
My initial familiarity with time reading was my mum’s alarm clock/radio, which displayed the time in a: hh:mm(ss) format. I remember not being able to read an actual clock dial until i was around 9-10 yo😂 Nowadays, i only utilise the 24 hr. time format
Dave Allen an absolute comedy genius so glad you reacted to this and mentioning how you tried to learn at school lol we all had that problem with the clock lol
My sister taught her kids by comparing the digital clock to the analog clock and then explaining the minutes between the numbers. Our father had us reading the clock by first grade. God forbid if you still had a watch that needed to be wound, lol.
Most children don't need to be shown how to tell the time, they learn and pick it up themselves over time as long as they have analogy clocks in their room and around the house and just tell them what the time is when they wake up (show them) and for each part of the day, eventually they just picked it up.
I remember to this day my teacher explaining to the class how to read a clock face. After all was said and done I was asked "what time would a quarter after 3 be?" My answer was 325 because a quarter is 25 cents 😂😂😂 Nowadays they're removing analog clocks from some schools because kids can't read them over digital.
