As someone who never believed in God, people who had to deconvert really impress me. You overcame so many odds. The deck has always been stacked against you, yet you prevailed. You were honest with yourself. Don't buy into the idea that figuring out God doesn't exist is no big deal. It _is_ a big deal. You found your way out of an intricate maze that was brilliantly designed to contain you for a lifetime. There are geniuses who couldn't do what you did.
This was my first video after crossing a half million subs. The future of this channel will continue to bring videos both silly and serious. Thank you, those of you who have stuck with me over the years. Welcome, those of you who are new. I hope to continue to be worthy of your interest and support.

I can see this in many many examples. I've seen quite some videos about beauty standards, the ideal body looks like Schwarzenegger or The Rock. And they look amazing, but they did a lot to look like that and that might not even be what you want because body can take on many shapes and both Arnold and Rock shaped their body to look, Swimmers will look differently because they shaped their body for something different, marathon runners are very skinny but they will easily outpace any body builder.

I grew up in a christian family. During this summer break (still ongoing as of this post) I was really wondering if christianity was true or if it was a false teaching. So I pondered and realized that the bible just glosses over the aftermath of the flood. You see, Noah took 2 of every animal (14 of the "clean" ones) and the ark probably ended up in eastern turkey.
According to people who believe in a great flood, the frogs and alligators in the amazon were somehow able to walk across the harsh conditions of siberia and canada, keeping in mind that reptiles and amphibians cannot survive in cold climate. Then you have the MVP (minimum viable population) number which for humans is 160; every animal has one but most of the ones you see today have one higher than 2. the MVP number states the minimum amount of a species is needed to ensure a viable gene pool. If you have only 3 couples (and all 3 men are brothers) then several generations down, we see serious genetic disorders. And to top it all off, these guys with downs syndrome, hemophilia, sickle cell anemia, and other genetic disorders somehow get the idea to build a massive tower to declare their greatness.
The above paragraph makes the flood story so implausible that it allows people who analyze it to debunk any religion with an apocalypse where 2 of each repopulates and all the animals spread out from one point.
As you can see, not everybody who grows up with a religion stays in a religion. Many start analyzing their beliefs in their early adulthood when they're away from their parents. Most however, remain with the same belief which they were taught.

So you found the idea of a God which created an incomprehensible universe, all inhabitants within and without, all known and unknown systems of science and thought, who brought about a child from nothing, who controlled swarms of insects and spoke from a burning bush DISCREDITED simply because it would take an act of providence to make that particular group of animals thrive again?
I'll give you one example of something more implausible which has undeniably taken place; you ready? Life.
I think one of the most fascinating proofs of God's word is this: "And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so." - Genesis 1:7

Your argument is basically, "God did a bunch of incomprehensible nonsense. What makes you think he couldn't do even more incomprehensible nonsense?"
Let's not forget that Genesis 1:16 comes after both 1:3 and 1:11. But we're not ignorant anymore. We know that light comes from stars. We know the moon doesn't generate light. We know that plants can't live without photosynthesis. We know there isn't water above the sky (or vault, in biblical terms.) We know that the sky isn't holding lights, those are actually just incredibly distant celestial bodies to which this planet is irrelevant. We know the stars don't serve as signs of anything, those are just human constructs. We know that stars are just gas. We know that neither the stars or moon has the explicit nor implicit 'purpose' of providing light. In fact, they don't have a purpose at all.

I'm atheist/agnostic, and one of my best friends is Christian. Even then, she surprises me sometimes with things that I'm sure her church would consider blasphemous. Things like, "There's no way Jesus was a white man, he was born in the Middle East; so why is every painting of him depicted as white?"
However, I know someone else, a very troubled, vengeful person, who tries to find people's names in bible passages, and use them as *proof* that others are out to get them. This same person once told me that my name was connected to godliness, because they found parts of my name in a bible verse... months later, in a fit of rage, they told me that my name spells 'devil', therefore I should never be trusted. I don't know what inspired their rage; I was going about my day, minding my own business, when they decided to send me a barrage of angry texts. blasphemy is talking down or insulting god. What she is saying is def not blasphemous and shes actually right. Jesus was very much so middle eastern he was born in Bethelhem, Isreal. and jesus is usually depicted as white because during the time being more pale was a sign of status and of course jesus would have that such high status as well and since during that time romans were so influencial other countries adopted that view of christ. and yeah some christians are weird the best way to know if someone isnt a weird christian is if to see if they mention what type of christian they are of if they just say they follow the word of Jesus Christ

The bad example of religion, is, religion.
The truth is found only in the real Jesus, who we are saved by grace from through faith.
I'm sorry these christains took you away from the faith, that is, If you had it.
I tell you this, Jesus is real, Just ask Him for a second chance, He can wash you, cleanse you, and save you, I know this because I was an atheist, I used to watch these videos and all sorts, but God showed me His realness and Love.
Look, the purpose of life is not of this world. The life of eternity God has set for us us to be, and we must put our faith in Christ to live.

My parents and me never went to church, but they did believe. (Or so I thought.) I was baptised and had my First Holy Communion. When I came out as an athiest, my mom told me my father was too, he just didn´t talk about it. I was very surprised because he´s friends with some priests but it turned out that they agreed not to bring their believes into consideration. My mom is more of a spiritist and doesn´t trust church just like allof my family.
My grandparent (not sure if their atheists or spiritists) told me not to tell anyone like I didn´t know it.

It's funny that I think of this, because when I look back on it. I almost didn't become an atheist, If I hadn't asked that question in Bible study that day, I might not have made the connection.
We were talking about how god supplies all of our needs, whatever it is you require he'll provide. But me and my cousin being 8 and 10 at the time respectively, had a question. I asked first, " What about the people who don't have what they need?" " And they believe and pray in god all the time."
No real answer was given, rather I was simply redirected by being told that we do not know why god does what he does.
My cousin then asked, " What about the people who don't believe in god that have more than what they need?"
Again, no real answer. From this point on to about age 14, I waffled back and forth. I searched for evidence of god, finding claims everywhere and looking at their validity. I examined the other side and I found myself. Stumped. Being a scientifically minded person, it cut to my core when I read what Stephen Hawking had to say on god. It was an article online, but I didn't believe it fully. Being a kid at the time, I couldn't swallow it, going to my mom with teary eyes asking her what she thought.
Like any loving mom, she comforted me. But she also reestablished my previous belief. I was comforted, but at the same time. I couldn't truly shake away what I'd read. From that point on, I was agnostic with a leaning toward the possibility of there being a god. I got home from school one day, did what I usually did. And there was this special on the science channel or natgeo talking about life after death, immortality, and supernatural phenomena. One segment particularly addressed prayer, how it's results didn't show that it actually had any effect on the outcome of cancer patients.
Later that week, I went through what I call accepting the truth. I didn't want to be seen, so I merely went in my basement and looked around. My mom has all kinds of christian posters, paintings, and bible verses everywhere. I just went down there and looked at it all. For hours. I sat. I cried. No matter what mental gymnastics I did, my brain just couldn't revert back.
For a 10 year old kid, the idea of death being the end is terrifying. Even now, I keep thinking to myself. This can't be all there is, there has got to be a way. My mind wants an out, a way to comfort itself. Before, I couldn't take it.
But now I can handle the truth. God is but a vestige of an era of the unknown.
I later told my sister this, what amazed me the most about her, is that she knew this would happen. Being the science kid that I was, she told me that she suspected I'd reach this conclusion.
As for her, she still says that she believes in a god. But I don't know to what extent.

Yeah for the longest time I wouldn't even call myself an atheist because I just couldn't accept it. Like I knew my faith was gone, but I didn't even wanna call myself. Even with my parents around. It took me some time before I accepted it. Like, The Amazing Atheist and other similar channels. I couldn't watch them, because I had still clung onto those ideas.
Eventually I moved past it, accepting the truth. I've been this way now for some time. And I hold to it. Every once in awhile, my mom tries to tell me that I will come back. I keep telling her that there isn't a chance.
I'm going to college soon, with a major in physics. I feel somewhat bad though, because my family is very rooted in religion. My grandpa is the pastor our church, having actually done quite a lot of good for our community. I feel bad about it because it's our family legacy at this point. I know it hurts them, but I had to tell them that I want nothing to do religion.

      @asuraspath2262 9 років тому +3

+Bennie “Bee836” C Well at least your parents allowed it lol. I read the Bible from the beginning to the end and I found it ridiculous. At the same time, I went to church every Saturdays and Sundays and I found out that people would only refer to the good things about God, but never give a flying fuck about the bad. I literally loved God like he was a parent until I was like 15. Started to have my doubts when I was 18 or something, but when I voiced them out I just got a hiding from my Dad. My Mum would pray for me and out of stupidity I would voice my thoughts on God on Facebook, but god forbid I forgot that the Pastor in our church was added to me and he prayed for me as well. Then my parents forced me to get baptized in a swimming pool when I was in my 20's. In the end, I can't really say anything to my parents, they would debunk what I say and just say, "Believe in God and you will get your CA." They would also force me to go to church even when my beliefs in God have literally completely disappeared. So when the worship starts on a Sunday(I don't go on Saturdays anymore), I would always look at the wall and imagine that I could be doing something more productive with my life.

I'm someone who was raised in a very religious country, surrounded by family who were Christians, neighbours who were Christians, teachers and friends who were Christians. I was a very religious person myself even as a kid. I remember basically preaching to kids in my class about God, and when I found out about a girl who was an atheist from an another class, I started telling others to stop talking to her, that she'll go to hell and they'll go with her if they talk to her too. It seems so ridiculous now, especially since I was 9 then.
I think the only reason I opened my eyes, stopped believing and became an atheist is because I moved to America for two years. Suddenly, I went to school with kids who believed in many different things, or maybe weren't religious at all. There wasn't a "religion class" in school, teacher's wouldn't look at you weirdly for not going to church. I improved my english and started watching english youtubers and movies. Most of my new internet idols were atheist and had progressive ideals. Soon, my brother stopped believing and after talking to him about it a couple times, I began question my faith as well.
When I moved back to my home country, everything felt weird, because suddenly I was looking at everything from an outsider's perspective. To be honest, with how much control religion has over students, schools and even laws in my country is baffling. Now it just feels like I have to live alongside relatives and acquaintances who are a part of the cult and I can't help them in any way. Thankfully, the internet is basically a source of the outside world to people and a lot of my friends stopped believing as well, because of the internet's influence. I'm glad people are at least seeing things with opened eyes now

If you really want to know who and what a Christian is I'd advise you to go back to your Bible and mainly read your Gospel texts (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) because they talk about the life of Jesus Christ which is where the term Christian comes from.

Ironically it was my very awesome and chill religion teacher who put the final nail in the coffin, as we worked through different other religions in our classes. I asked how there can be only one truth when there are so many believes that all have valid points? He then said "There is no right or wrong way, just follow your heart" when I asked if I rather shouldn't believe in all of this he said: "God is kind and loves you regardless. He only judges you by your deeds, not your believes". And so I decided to just not believe and simply be a decent human being.

As a man whom has been among others while we all saw both Santa Claus and gods in person (different occasions, and drugs were definitely not involved), I would say that intelligence and wisdom are somewhat different here. Both Santa Claus and gods have both far too much and far too little ascribed to them by those who follow the Ridiculous Claims. Much is attributed to both, and far too little is accepted of both. Far too much belief is prescribed, and far too little proof of existence and characteristics is required. The difference is, the religion of Coke Cola's ad campaign gone viral is in its infancy. And the religion of each and every god from history is well established, with at least a century more of 'maturity' in which the masses of its followers have laid attribution upon attribution at the feet of making their religion more justified.
Of course the god of Coke isn't to be believed. That happened middle of last century. Give it time...
Intelligence is the capacity to understand the concept and to understand logic, flawed as it may be.
Wisdom is understanding which logic is flawed.
If you don't demand basic proof of existence and attribution, you're never going to see wisdom. You'll see plenty of intelligence though.

Yes... But knowing what will happen means *it will happen*... Why is the cause relevant? Technically, god knows the causes that led to your ultimate decisions, exemplifying the impossibility of free will! Omnisciences implies that the universe is deterministic; predetermined... Knowing everything would entail knowing the causes that engendered every possible occurrence.
"There will be presidential elections this year in America. By your logic, because I know this it must happen..."
No... It just means you know it will happen...
"Knowing future events means only that, knowing, not causing"
But this "knowing" would encapsulate the causes! Regardless of the distinction, free-will is ultimately mitigated by the fact that our decisions are predetermined!
"God knows what you'll freely choose"
That's contradictory: That's stating there's a 50% chance of absolute certainty, which boils down to a 50% chance... There is no "free decision" as the future is already determined... If I eat eggs tomorrow morning, and god knows this, there's nothing I can to to alter this future, as it would suggest that the variables have only allowed for this occurrence!

People don't realise how much of an impact their beliefs have on a child.
Ever since I was a kid, I kinda felt... wrong. And I didn't know why. I just remember thinking that I didn't like going to Church, that I felt *forced* and that God never spoke to me, the way the Bible claimed so many times He did to other people. Worse, I felt like, if God ever existed, he hated me because I was a hypocrite child pretending to believe in him.
This thoughts ran wild in my mind, and I was 6 years old.
I truly tried to believe in Him, because the bliss of knowing that, no matter what happens, you'll find yourself and your loved ones in Heaven, gives you hope and courage. But no, even as a child, my mind kept on refusing that idea. There is no after life. I've always known that, I just accepted it when I was 10. Gosh, how much I hated my teenage years, my parents called me "a demon", "Satan's pawn". They used to blame me for every disgrace, because I didn't believe in God so it was my fault. Even if their accusations were beyond logical reasons, they still bugged me for years, and I eventually believed that I was a disgrace to our family, that my existence was a pain in the ass.
We fought at least once a day, and I am 21 now, and once in a while my parents still ask me why I don't believe in God.
You Christians have no idea of how much it hurts.m

This really is the sad truth. I have a friend in school who is, with me, one of the most intelligent people in our grade. We understand complex concepts that nobody else gets, and are good friends. But he has been brainwashed his whole life to believe everything in the bible. In logical debates, it always comes down to the importance of faith to him. I don't mind him being religious, but it feels strange to have a friend that never swears or talks of anything that the bible doesn't promote. It really bothers me that such an intelligent person must give so much to a worthless cause because of indoctrination from early childhood.

This video isn't only about religion, its a basis of everything... It shows reminds you about other cultures. In ancient India the practice of burning widows when their spouse died was something not frowned upon, and people completely accepted it because their society was shaped that way, and us, being raised the opposite have absolutely zero basis on explaining how they could be wrong without objective morals. I agree with the message of this video entirely, and it yet it is logically inconsistent on explaining why things like killing disbelievers is bad, or even anything to care or bother about, from the perspective of someone that doesn't believe in god.

This will be a hot take in the comments here, but I am someone who was agnostic for most of my life (currently 21 years old, and began adopting religious beliefs about a year ago). Since I have begun learning of Catholic teachings, my life has become more purposeful than ever and I’ve actually begun to enjoy life for once. However, I do understand the concerns people bring up about the unfortunate things people do in the name of religion.
I think it’s unfortunate that people do such things to others and use religion to justify themselves, when in actuality, Judeo-Christian practices emphasize that it is not mankind’s job to judge others, but to love people to a degree that we want to guide them closer to God without wishing ill upon them. God loves you as you are, but loves you too much to let you stay that way as well.
From this perspective, I believe that religion really holds no disadvantage, as it’s a perspective that avoids condemnation and demeaning of others, while still providing principles that help us to live a meaningful life and a desire to help others live in a way that helps us all grow together.
Debating on the existence of a God or on religion is a bit out of my level of understanding, but I do know that proper practice of religion leads to teaching good principles, and even if you don’t believe in religion, it still has valuable insight into living a meaningful life (Studying Buddhism has helped me discover tools to have a clearer and open mind).
I wish all of you well ✌️

Jesus doesn't forbid you to express yourself and do whatever you want to do unless what you want to do is detrimental to yourself and other people like murder and rape. Then he doesn't want you to do it because he LOVES YOU but then again do you want to hurt people or yourself ? Probably not.
Also it is Jesus that gives you the dreams that you want to accomplish in this life, believe it or not he is good and our desires of a life filled with love, friendship, joy and happiness come from him because he has all those things and he wants good for all men which is him.
That is why he died for us all and forgave us all of ALL of our sins and when he says ALL he means ALL of them.
That means you are perfect in the eyes of God no matter how much you fail at not sinning, you will always be perfect in the eyes of God. For God has already forgiven you 2000 years ago and totally has FORGOTTEN ALL OF YOUR SINS, your sins have been effectively removed from your existence so that God can be with you and you didn't have to lift a finger to make that happen. Because God did all the work for you so that you can just rest from your efforts of trying to be perfect for God by relying on his perfect work for you that makes you perfect by HIS hands.
Jesus will always be there for you and he will always love you, that means he will never let you go no matter how bad your situation is from your end. For God sees you exactly the same way as he sees Jesus, that means God doesn't see our sin at all because Jesus has no sin.
The best part is that you receive this awesomeness absolutely for free, you didn't have to work, pray, try to be good for this tremendous gift God has given to all men, you only have to realize that you are in sin and change your mind to see that you need a saviour to get out of it, that's all you need to do to obtain salvation by receiving the gift of salvation.
Also to clarify the word repentance for you for many misunderstand the meaning of this word, repentance actually means "to change your mind". It does not mean to wallow in your self pity because you sinned or crying to God for forgiveness for your sin, when he has already forgiven everyone 2000 years ago, that's not repentance. If you have ever seen anyone do that as an action of repentance, then that individual is not getting the picture of what God did for him and that person needs to actually repent by changing their mind and see that Jesus has already reconciled man to God for him. That means man doesn't have to feel bad for his mistakes but be in extreme joy that God has forgiven him of all his trespasses and when he does change his mind and start to act from a position of being completely forgiven.
Then all his trouble with sin will begin to subside and he will have no problem denying himself the things that are detrimental to his very being not because he has to but because he wants to, it's a total shift in your consciousness it's quite real and it's so good as it makes everything so easy !
Our God is truly compassionate and loving so it's sad that the church culture has moved you away from him but God is awesome and he never gives up on showing you his love for you because won't ever stop loving you.

    • @sigra4867
      @sigra4867 8 років тому

Jesus doesn't force you to do anything you don't want to so your parents aren't exactly following his example if you feel you are forced to attend church and are forced to keep your view of reality a secret.
That is not in line with the Jesus I know, who has never forced me to do anything, he only invited me to receive his free gift of salvation to which I have received by saying "yes I need a savior" and he invites me every day to follow him in this life. I can choose to follow him or not to meet people and talk to people wherever he wants me, however whatever the choice I make he won't look at me differently at all.
For I will still be a child of God and I will still be perfectly loved by God, no matter how much I fail in this life, he will never fail at loving me and his work of salvation will never make me fall into death, no matter how much of an idiot I can be which makes me really happy! For the gospel is GOOD news and our reactions to it are GOOD when we hear the truth of the work God has worked for us.
If this is not the image of God in your church a God that has completely forgiven and forgotten your sins and completely loves you as you are, then I understand that you are not attracted to him because they aren't showing you how God really is towards you.
He is more loving that any loving mother can be, for he is love and he likes us to see that he is that loving or else you are going to have trouble like self condemnation, self pity because of sin and other things that pull us into fear and condemnation. Condemnation which finally ends in people either giving up on believing or commit suicide, so if your parents are condemning themselves for their sins and you for yours.
Have compassion on them for they don't understand the work Jesus did for them, tell them Jesus has already forgiven them 2000 years ago so they can stop feeling bad for their sins for God doesn't see them as sinful he sees them exactly as he sees Jesus, that means God sees them as perfect.

I never believed them to be true, but I also did not think they were dangerous and abhorrent because these stories were told and repeated by those I considered to be good people. Then one day I idly read a conversation between two atheist thinkers and realised how vile one story truly was and how broken a mind must be to think such a story is good. I wonder how many more such abhorrent beliefs and stories I hold in good regard.

+quintopia That was very well said, but I think that the world is changing. I graduated from high school last year, and I would estimate that 60% of my graduating class was Atheist. Making a joke about religion was a great way to make a group laugh. That was in upstate NY.
Now I've moved further south, and there are far more religious people my age. Hopefully Atheism will spread through the country, but I think in 3 more generations, Atheism could be the largest belief.

I grew up being taught the that the "ridiculous claim" was "true". As I got older I began to question things. Around the age of 12. I started to constantly ask things like who created god or why does he send people he loves to hell. My knowledge of the world and how awful it is grew and came into play. I began asking bigger questions like "If man didn't know the difference between right and wrong until they ate from "the tree of the knowledge of good and evil" then why did god punish them for eating from it? They didn't know what they were doing was wrong. Eventually I managed to deconvert by the time I was 14. I realized just how evil this god I grew up believing in and worshiping was and that he was the creation of man.

love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

@@alicia78421 Jesus' existence as a person on this Earth is supported by virtually all historians, christian and non-christian. It's his resurrection that is so often debated about. However there is strong evidence, on top of the word of God, that the resurrection occurred. This supporting evidence of the resurrection supports the existence of a God, the one and only God, presenting God as more than just a fictional character or imaginary friend, actually quite the opposite.

    • @demelzakonoplyanka8550
      @demelzakonoplyanka8550 5 років тому +7

@@alicia78421 yeah of course. Different first-hand accounts of Jesus:
1)Josephus was a well-connected aristocrat and military leader in Palestine who served as a commander in Galilee during the first Jewish Revolt against Rome between 66 and 70 A.D. Although Josephus was not a follower of Jesus, “he was around when the early church was getting started, so he knew people who had seen and heard Jesus,” Mykytiuk says.
2)Tacitus, roman senator and historian, mentions that Emperor Nero falsely blamed “the persons commonly called Christians, who were hated for their enormities. Christus, the founder of the name, was put to death by Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea in the reign of Tiberius.” 64 A.D
There is obviously much more evidence supporting the existence of Jesus as a person but what about his existence as the son of God and the evidence for his resurrection?
      1) Three truths accepted by virtually all historians, christian and non-christian:
-The tomb in which Jesus was buried was discovered empty by a group of women on the Sunday following the crucifixion.
-Jesus' disciples had real experiences with one whom they believed was the risen Christ.
-As a result of the preaching of these disciples, which had the resurrection at its center, the Christian church was established and grew.
The historical evidence of the empty tomb:
-earliest Jewish arguments against Christianity admit the empty tomb. In Matthew 28:11-15, there is a reference made to the Jew's attempt to refute Christianity be saying that the disciples stole the body. This is significant because it shows that the Jews did not deny the empty tomb. The Jewish leaders opposed Christianity so acknowledging the empty tomb would not be in their favor.
-the resurrection was preached in the same city where Jesus had been buried shortly before. Jesus' disciples did not go to some obscure place where no one had heard of Jesus to begin preaching about the resurrection, but instead began preaching in Jerusalem, the very city where Jesus had died and been buried. They could not have done this if Jesus was still in his tomb--no one would have believed them.
-The allegation that someone had stolen the body is an implicit admission that the tomb was empty. The fact that Jesus’ opponents conceded the vacancy of the tomb is strong evidence in the eyes of historians.
      2) the evidence of the resurrection of Christ: A method commonly used today to determine the historicity of an event is "inference to the best explanation." William Lane Craig describes this as an approach where we "begin with the evidence available to us and then infer what would, if true, provide the best explanation of that evidence." In other words, we ought to accept an event as historical if it gives the best explanation for the evidence surrounding it.

I just retorted, "God gave you all the time in your life and you ONLY give him one hour a week?" LOL. I think that was the beginning of the end of my belief in deities. That was 1997, so what . . . 19 years ago now.

+EstariaValens This year was the first time I didn't attend ash wednesday. my entire family is made up of staunch catholics. they aren't very happy about it. My aunt says that im lost because now i have nothing.
nothing holding me back anymore. Its really such a relief to leave religion behind. Its only after you leave it do you realise just how badly it punished you for doing things that arent really bad. the stress and guilt of committing sins like missing church and not partaking in the biscuit god i used to call the eucharist. I spent 7 years in catechism, 5 years in the life teen program. 3 years in the band. 2 years on the young adults core committee. i was a leader on the alpha course, and i had done the course twice. (and also been 'slain by the holy spirit') and also gone on pilgrimage multiple times.
and then suddenly the lens shattered. i understood exactly how everything worked. and apologetics couldnt hold me anymore. i was sitting at a committee meeting and somebody said something about the existence of god. I replied with yeah, but we can't give definite proof that god exists, which is where the need for faith comes in. the person replied with 'of course we can prove god exists' and then he presented the statement 'i exist because god exists' as a logical argument.
From that point onward, i began to see the bullshit in every statement. every one oozing with stupidity. Illogicality flying through the room. suddenly i lost the ability to give input at the meetings because i found myself disagreeing with everything. I had to quit immediately. I actually didnt know what was happening to me. i just couldnt support them any more. i mean, sure i love them. i love everyone in my church community. but its all a lie.

+EstariaValens I never thought of it that way. When I used to attend church every Sunday, I thought that one hour per week was enough, but now it really makes sense that one hour isn't much at all considering how the relationship is set up. Like if I had a child, I would expect myself to spend as much time as possible with my child, and not just one hour per week, so your comment really opened up my eyes even more.

+Raven3one Omg we're in a similar boat with this. Ex-Catholics unite! This ash Wednesday was the first time as long as I could remember that I didn't get ashes when my family did. Luckily they're not dicks about it though. I get your last point too that you love your Church community, and given that like all my friends up till 12th grade are Catholics and went to local churches I see what you mean. My neighborhood didn't have many people my age and I went to parochial school k-12. I still like my friends and family, they're otherwise cool people lol

This is the best explanation I have ever seen for why religious beliefs still exist today

My deconversion was actually preceded by a period of increased religiosity. In high school, I started to fear my own mortality and Hell. I was looking for validation that everything would be alright, somehow wound up reading some old philosophy textbooks, and discovered the Ontological Argument. From that point, my God concept was a lot more restricted and well-defined (as opposed to the nebulous inconsistent blob most apologists use, which will flip-flop between mutually exclusive options so long as it wins an argument), and I started reading the Bible. I stopped sometime during the Pentateuch, I think right around where the genocide starts up. Not really sure because my mind blanked out and started skimming, which I assume was the cognitive dissonance kicking in. Later, I was working on developing a fantasy setting with its own pseudo-Christian mythology/cosmology. Having this proxy for Yahweh was really crucial to me realizing I can't square Omnibenevolence with most biblical concepts, and I became Deist. Even later, I took to watching videos debunking Creationism and other obvious nonsense, because I love a good science-pwn, and picked up enough from the Atheist Experience to shed the last of the self-deception.
Looking back, it is terrifying how much bad apologetics I absorbed, and attempted to use on my Atheist friends, without having spent significant time at church. The memes are so well refined that anyone can regurgitate them without realizing they're following a script that's been refuted a thousand times. It's only in hindsight that you can say "Oh man, he's using that line? I used that line! I've said all these things before, AND I still remember how right it all felt! How was I such a dumbass?"

+ShawnPattonC, same here. I came to realize how bad the apologetics were which were reinforcing what I believed. I looked at arguments against God and they seemed so much better. Not to mention, I don't see any good reasons to believe in God anymore.
I still fear death at times and horrendous instances of suffering causes me great discomfort because I wouldn't want those things to happen to me, so how could I be comfortable with others suffering that way?
