'Angel Heart' tells the story of Harry Angel, who is a private detective contracted by Louis Cyphre to track down the iconic singer Johnny Favorite. However, everybody that Angel questions about Favorite seem to meet a tragic demise. Eventually, the trail leads Angel to New Orleans where he learns that Favorite had dabbled in the black arts. As Favorite's whereabouts and true identity become clear, Angel learns that being hired by Cyphre was not a random choice.

This is my favourite Rourke performance. I loved the movie. Back when Mickey was at the top of his game.
He had the looks and the wise-ass street charm

I agree 100%... Criminally underknown, underrated, under appreciated - a modern classic! Hopefully in the future it will get the recognition it truly deserves.

@@classiccomedycinemaprogram1640 A late recognition. In 1987 the film was not appreciated the way it shoult be, although it is a great film, now with a kult status.
Mickey Rourke delivered one of the finest performances I've ever seen in this film. I couldn't take my eyes off him for a second. His acting reminded me of James Dean, Brando and Clift at their peak. Every pause, mannerism and intonation was perfect.

One of the most sinister movies I have ever seen. It took me weeks to recover. I even had to go and see a screening of Disney's Hundred and One Dalmatians to wash off the trauma!!
Weeks? Try years! It still creeps me out. But I am compelled to watch it again.

@ichabodcrane2487 So true. I've been obsessed with it for decades. So haunting, and such a great thriller. Mickey Rourke's performance is out of this world. I bought the VHS. Every time I see it, it creeps me out.
The one other movie that is also haunting and based on a true story is Flowers of Hope with Christian Bale. It haunts me to this day.

I rented the movie from a video store in 1988. After I saw it, I was so impressed that I had no words. The whole Faust-detective-blues thing from Parker with Rourke in his undoubtedly best role is just magical and still haunts me to this day. Not to mention the supernatural soundtrack and the best ending in movie history.
Later I had the pleasure of watching The Shining with Nicholson and found it to be the second great horror thriller after Angel Heart. The ballroom scene is simply divine and the ending is brilliant. Then of course there are Rosemary's Baby and The Ninth Gate, which are also fantastic and also have the devil as a protagonist.
Anyway, the eighties were a great decade for movies, not least because of Rourke's 9 1/2 Weeks, The Pope of Greenwich Village and The Year of the Dragon, to name just a few.
We were spoiled with real movie art, which unfortunately no longer exists today.
@ichabodcrane2487 You mention the ending in The Shining. It's weird that it was different in the book. There were a few things that differed from the book, perhaps due to budgets. Both were good though. Check out Satan's Triangle with Kim Novak. Another one that will haunt you. I found it on UA-cam for free.

I love the look on DeNiro’s face at around 2:26 when Angel is telling him about his time in the war. Tells you everything you need to know.
In an actor directors career their lucky to make one great movie, this is Rourkes and Parker’s. Absolute masterpiece

Wow I've never picked up on that piece of dialog. I guess the atmosphere and actors presence makes a difference.

Spring of '87, I remember moseying into a discount house to see this movie on a ho-hum weekday afternoon. I didn't know what I was getting into. After almost 40 years I cherish how some of the scenes still haunt me.
I wish every movie was this great.
Love the movie and the book,both are a masterpiece. This and Jacobs Ladder with Tim Robbins are just two underated but incredible films.

Mickey Rouke c. 1984 to 1990 was a major talking point in the late 80s world wide, a major celebrity and a true eccentric movie star. To say many women found the rogue Actor " attractive " was an understatement ! They never stopped talking about the handsome actor and his sauve as Hell on screen presence.
To men ; he represented the goal of success, fame and the might of Hollywood stars. In hindsight ~ perhaps ~ now he represented our power of our Freedom of Choice and he admits his own inflated ego and sudden rise to huge international fame was simply overwhelming at times .
# He was a true' Johnny Favourite' in so many weird ways to so many.
His body of acting work is outstanding and original.
Angel Heart is a cinematic journey into our darker fate and the process of self - realisation.

I don’t think he knows he’s Favourite at this point, he may recall something, but doesn’t see it as himself. Wonderful Rourke performance, his finest movie in my opinion.
He understood he's done the moment he saw Cypher the first time, however he tries to deny. He clearly understands HE is the one he's looking for when Epiphany sings the melody he was whistling and played on Krusemark piano. The only thing unclear is how it's possible to contain two identities at a time. Ethan story is a manual, not a revelation.
@@vrombo Clearly? Angel certainly doesn’t play it that way, there’s no fact at all he sees it like that, obviously cypher knows, but Angel hasn’t connected the dots at this stage, hence the confusion whistling, which he doesn’t remember. Classic shell shock you may say.
@@johnscone9382 yeah, I didn't understand either when was younger, but the fact is, he PLAYS the melody, only faster and in minor. That's why Margaret didn't associate as well.

I love the way De Niro is shaking his head to say "no", when Rourke asks them if they found him in a phone book because his name is under "A's"...when you know who De Niro really is, it's creepy.

When you first watch the movie you think it's just a detective movie until it gets closer to the end
This film was beyond frightening.
For the life of me this movie has never left my mind since I first saw it at a young age. The VHS was just laying around and the rest is history.
Several coencidences since then involved connections to Louisiana eventually brought me there.
Yes I went on IMDB and looked up all the locations in New Orleans and Thibodaux. Visited every location which felt erie because I've heard the soundtrack so many times it played in my head by default.
Walking through the French Quarter with the music by Trevor Jones fitted perfectly.
It's a great movie👍
The sequel to the book that this is based on is also pretty intense and the ending puts a whole new spin on the first book and this film

This was also one of my favorite top 10 movies. DeNiro was real insidious as the devil should be. Mickey Rourke was so good that I didn't appreciate any movies he did afterwards
The novel Fallen Angel which the movie is based on is a brilliant read, you will keep skipping back to chapters that you have just read?...the book definitely plays tricks with your mind that's for sure 👺

I’m curious to see if this film is better than devils advocate, I thought Al Pacino did an impeccable job and some say de niro did better
devils advocate was less dark but more visual
Pacino had much more screen time in comparison to De Niro; I think both were great, but De Niro is more mysterious and frankly less hammy. And Angel Heart is by far the better film.
Angel Heart blows Devils Advocate out of the water. Hands down

Yeah really. I love Al Pacino and _The Godfather_ is a masterpiece of American cinema.
But this film so much better than _Devil's Advocate_ ... they really shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath
Johnny Favourite sold his soul for fame: but Harry Angel doesn't even know who he is? I think Favourite was short changed on that deal.
Johnny got his fame then decided the price was too high and tried to find a loophole out of the deal. Needless to say Mr. Cipher closed that loophole for him.
The scene where Johnny realizes that he is doomed for eternity is absolutely terrifying. It would be better to die the biggest unknown loser than to have to face that.
Been better if someone like Anthony Hopkins played the Devil=not so sure De Niro has range. Rourke exceptional

De Niro didn’t like Rourke improvising so much and he told the director to tell Rourke to stop. He also refused to speak to Rourke off camera because he felt it was better for the scenes between them to remain distant. Rourke got offended by that. Apparently De Niro also told Scorsese not to cast Rourke in the Irishman due to their alleged feud. However, Rourke praised De Niro at the time and said he enjoyed working with him and learned a lot. In my opinion, I think De Niro felt threatened by a slightly younger actor with the potential to be even better than him and he tried to shut Rourke down. De Niro has been silent about this publicly which makes me think it’s true.
The Scorcese casting Rourke for the Irishman is fake news.
It's true that Rourke got offended by DE Niro.
De Niro didn't had nothing against Rourke, he even told Parker the director that Rourke is an amazing actor after shooting the last scene in the mirror.
Nowadays Rourke says DE Niro is a cool guy everything's fine between them.
I think it was ahead of its time. If it came out in the era of A24, instead of bombing, it would have made a decent profit.
