Another very helpful video. I'm an intermediate on a surf ski. Last year I partially tore a tendon and developed tennis elbow in my left arm. I'm wondering if it's due to not rotating enough and still using my arms? If it is it would have to be very subtle because I've really worked on my stroke. Is that a common injury? Thanks

Yes that is likely the culprit. Looking at a video of you paddling I'd suspect the elbow immediately bends under pressure instead of staying locked out with the hip guiding it. Elbows aren't meant to propel our body weight so those tendons can get overloaded quickly.

@@K2NOPS I live in the Northeast United States. When weather warms up a little I'm going to have someone videotape me maybe you could help with my form. I don't plan on missing this season because of my injury. Trying to work through it. Thank you for your input

Was wondering if you could discuss the theories and practicalities of blade width on OC1. I use a 9 3/8 blade but I’m seeing some top paddlers using way less. From 7 1/5 to 9 inch. I’m 5’7”, use a 49” length and wondering if I could benefit from using a smaller width on my blade. Mahalo nui loa 🤙

The best rule of thumb is to have the paddle match YOUR strengths. Looking at the shape to see where the paddle is strongest in the stroke to match where you feel strongest (the catch or the power.) Then having the width match your stroke rate preference. If you're big and powerful a wide paddle compliments that. If you're being quicker with your strokes and less powerful you can use a smaller blade to enhance that finesse. Dialing it in takes trial and error and as you progress it may change! I'm 5ft6 and use a 48-50 inch long hart attack depending on the boat/distance but that's just my preference. I like to grab a lot of water early then kinda cruise through the stroke at a 55-60 stroke rate typically and the paddle matches that usage. If I used a long tahitian blade the same way it wouldn't be as good, I would need to lower my rate and stay in the water long to maximize that paddle at 50spm-53spm depending on the boat speed.
It can be really technical but trying different paddles and finding things you like is the key.

@@K2NOPS thanks.I’m currently using the 49” Hart Attack. Definitely experimenting on the blade width.
I see your in Hernando County. Grew up at Hernando Beach and went to Central High.

Very poor explanation of the fundamentals of paddling. More marketing for new students and very disrespectful of the paddler's intelligence. Like Oscar telling you that you do not need feather! Lotsssss of talking and nothing constructive and does not encourage people to go paddling.

Having an open dialogue about what information you think should be conveyed, and how, would bring more insight onto your perspective and let readers validate if it's one worth hearing/sharing. Not everyone understands "simple" concepts immediately; which you would learn in a coaching role with a high volume of people over time.
