    As my excellent coach says "Put paddle in water and pull" I get so up i my head that I can barely do that sometimes!

    Kia Ora . Im so happy i come across this. Im a newbie to Waka Ama, 3month max. I like how you say,learn to move the body rather then your arms. I will try this technique at training tonight. I feel even after 3months of paddling my forearms and shoulders ache after coming of the water. Im powering my arms and not moving the body much. Good to see other techniques,might pass on to my coach lol

      Aloha Jay .> Thank you = YES Please share this with your Coach .. it will make his life easier so he can FOCUS on the REFINEMENT points to get faster improvement to beginners .. yes if your shoulders HURT now .. it's because you're putting the WEIGHT of your BODY onto the shoulder joint.. this will end your paddling career really soon .. so YES.. PULL with your whole body .. it's a one arm dead lift .. ALoha Ian

    Thank you! This is what I like. Engaging the core and it's easier to translate to the lower body and legs too. I trained cleaning stalls and tossing loads.

    Thank you for probably the simplest yet most comprehensive explanation of a paddling stroke I’ve seen. I’ve been helming/coaching at a start up dragon boat club and “pits to gunnels” is about to be tried out as a prompt!

    I think that top arm chicken wing comes from Tupu King. You can see it in the Wake Ama 2021 500meter sprint. Clearly its not a problem for him but it would be for we mere mortals!

      Aloha Lehmann - No NOT Tupu King ... I was with him in Singapore on a trip before during the Singapore Ocean Cup.. he might have done it in Sprints as part of correcting the direction of his boat drawing his blade .. He's the real deal .. much younger but one of the few I really respect .. but I love to see the video you're talking about

      Tupu king doesn't "chicken wing", but he did mention starting with top arm bent and pressing the top arm forward to apply better drive force to the paddle

      Aloha Lehmann - Actually he follows what I've said for 10 years of video.. you do BEND your ELBOW ( keep it high ) to ENGAGE the LAT and ABS for the TOP ARM Drive .. BUT .. you DO NOT ..     Trying to overcome a lifetime of instincts is difficult. Difficult to teach your body to NOT paddle with your arms. Instead, think of paddling as a full-body exercise like a muscle-up or deadlift while sitting.
