    This was super helpful. My triangle gets smaller on the catch as my top arm is too bent.

      Theres always a balance. Straight is bad. Too bent is bad. There's a happy middle in there. Everyone is different with arm length proportional to their torso length too.

    Hi Robert Norman. Would please suggest an amount of: 1. Repetitions, and 2. Sets, for all of these exercises here, to aid my on water training distance of 4 miles on flat water in a K1? Kindest regards.

      I like 10-15 for strength at 3-4 sets. Lactic acid threshold for endurance more reps and sets can work depending.

    I have been practicing this on my single footwell surfski a v10Sport but for my big water race this Sunday I will use my double footwell Futura II because I still feel I may fall out of the V10S. With the Futura II I have been frustrated that I can’t get as good of a leg drive because the single legs wells are tight and the bucket is padded and harder to rotate on. After this race I will refocus with the V10S.

    I paddle kayak and Surfski where very few people do. People often comment on my Surfski or even long kayak with some interest. Lots of small rec kayaks and inflatable sups. I try to break the Strava segments in the area and listen to your series to inspire me to try to link a run with a paddle or even a paddle alone. Maybe a Facebook event? Informal. Idk. Listening.

    Fantastic explanation for very complex paddling dynamics-in a way I can apply in the boat. As I started learning, at first a very low percentage of my strokes “got it right.” I was consciously incompetent. There’s a lot going on and staying upright dominates the mind. But seeing these clear descriptions helps me to gain a higher percentage of moments of “getting it right.” Sometimes I even string together a series of smooth efforts-longer and longer strings. I was occasionally becoming “consciously competent.” Reps must be good reps or at least progressing to good reps, and these videos help so much! At some point I will then proceed to coaching because I’m sure I will need an external expert observer to help me really move to the next level. I look forward to the day when I’m “unconsciously competent” and can just focus on navigating, putting out watts and regulating effort. Thank you! 😊

    Fabulous episode! Thank you Robert and Jesse! Robert, as you say, thanks for pulling back the veil!! So much incredible info and advice: Takeaways for me that were meaningful: Preparation and mental fortitude more important than equipment, as is skill acquisition and frequency of that skill acquisition with technique for movement efficiency. Priceless! Skill acquisition Movement efficiency Comfort in different scenarios Stability Longer frequency Endurance & intensity Vo2 max. Engine. Grinders. Develop an engine and have a steady base. The limiter is how big an engine can you build for Intermediate paddlers-limited by Vo2 max. Micro intervals Engine plus training technique, Rob Jesse tips: what is a catch, pull & exit and how they connect and only as strong as weakest link. Use Top arm to guide. Rob. Loss of tension a big deal. Emphasis on Humility in asking for help & coaching. Even at Jesse’s level. Train at different cadences. 2K test.??? Loved the emphasis on stability. No shame in stability. A limiter for proficiency athletes is the ability to relax. As a novice, relaxing is still difficult for me.

      Great summation! I’d add PV02 (power at V02max) being a common limiter for the intermediate athlete.

    It appears that proper paddling involves the lower half doing the work dynamically (moving) while the shoulders and arms engage isometrically. Very similar to proper pedaling (cycling) in which the big muscles are powering the stroke while the lower leg/foot engage (mostly) isometrically to translate power to the pedals. Decades ago cyclists used to talk about “ankling” (moving the ankle) in the pedal stroke but it’s clear the lower leg/ankle are mostly engaging isometrically during the power phase. I think some people get confused because they feel their shoulders and arms “engaging” (flexing) but they should be doing it mostly isometrically (flexing but not moving). But of course I could be wrong! 😅

    • @K2NOPS
      @K2NOPS Місяць тому

      Yes that's the idea!!! It isn't truly isometric with the upper body but it's much closer to that than the dynamic motion of the legs
