I think the movie is worth seeing. The actors took guitar lessons, worked with a vocal coach and were authentic in performing the music in the film. Also, I really got the sense what the folk music scene in NYC was like in relationship to politics- the Cuban missel crisis and assassination of President Kennedy. I also learned how Dylan kept his distance from the press and tried to be elusive. This movie is a notch above other biopics I have seen.
I've been aware of Dylan since the hoot days in the park back in '62 when he was a Woody wannabe. I thought it was a goofy voice, but once he got his character down, I got to appreciate it. I can't imagine the "Highway 61" album being as good sung by anyone else.
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine i read a biography of Dylan years ago that featured quotes from people who knew him growing up. Apparently he had an angelic singing voice, but he just chose not to use it. His love was always in the old blues singers, and authenticity over more popular mores. This doesn't really explain the frog-like croak he has adopted in the last 40 years however.
Bob Dylan was involved in the script... Actually had multiple passes at it. You don't even have to be a major Bob Dylan fan for this to be a no-brainer!
My oldest son, (38 years old) who is a big Dylan fan, went Saturday night and said it was great! I’m going to check it out for myself eventually. Thanks Michael!! Happy 2025!! 🎉❤️⛄️🍻❄️🎵🎼🎶🎊
Saw the movie on Saturday. Well-made and some great performances, but after watching this 2-hour biopic, I’m still no closer to knowing anything essential about the man himself. I think that was very intentional on director James Mangold’s part. It’s less a movie about Dylan and more about how others were impacted (good and bad) by his genius and prickliness. The mystery Dylan has cultivated all these decades remains preserved.
@ Hi Royce! Glad you enjoyed this and the Bob Marley one (which I also saw just recently). Both lead actors, for the Dylan and Marley films, really committed to their parts. The Newport story is an important one in rock history and I think A Complete Unknown did a great job capturing the atmosphere of that key moment in time.
If you think of him( Bob)of a great poet firstly … and almost always writing entirely all his 300+ songs, then it is not a great deal that he might not be a trained singer.
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine Thanks for the reply.I was born in 1961 and my parents were purchasing and playing Dylan and the Beatles in our house beginning in 1964. I rode my ‘rocking’ horse to this music.
The cool thing about the Brian Wilson biopic is that it chose to focus on two specific periods of his life instead of trying to tell his whole life story.
Lennon took lessons from Dylan. His output illustrates how well he learned. One misses so many excellent tunes when listening to only Greatest Hits albums. Give Blonde on Blonde a listen and tell me why that entire album isn't a greatest hits album? Also Bringing it All Back Home or Highway 61 Revisited - which is the "bad" song on any of those albums? A Dylan story properly told should be a series and spread over time. As for Dylan's voice - he has a style his own. I figure he does what he can with what he has. Not too shabbily done by that standard.😎

Let's be honest. No Bio Pic is going to be 100% accurate. Do they stretch the truth? Do they leave stuff out? Sure they do.But hey, that's what happens.
Speaking of double album sales, yes, something like White Album with 24 million sales is impressive, but sales are recorded per disc, so it was 12 million units of the double album that happened, gets counted as 24 million. Still impressive. Just to be clear. Same for the Led Zep double album and any others.
One overlooked part of the story was the forced change of “Freewheelin’” after Columbia objected to the now-famed four tracks “”Let Me Die in My Footsteps”, “Talkin John Birch Society”, “Rocks & Gravel” & “Rambling Gambling Willie”. Dylan was set to visit the Ed Sullivan show when they objected to the Birch number, and Dylan walked out. Was there a reason this wasn’t in the story?
My absolute favorite, Bob Dylan album is blood on the tracks. Not a bad track. Great great record, but that’s my own personal opinion others may not agree but I don’t give a shit.
I quit watching biopic films after I saw "Ray," the Ray Charles biopic. I would rather remember the artist as I had known, instead of trying to watch actors like Jamie Foxx and Will Smith do bad portrayals of the original greats. I've been a huge Dylan fan for 50 plus years, but I'm passing on this movie. I don't like bio-pics. I highly recommend a documentary on Dylan by Martin Scorsese called No Direction Home to anyone who is interested in Bob.
Bob Dylan plugged in and basically invented folk rock, Newport 1965. More importantly, he helped modernize the live concert experience, making it possible for Jimi Hendrix to fully showcase his talent on electric guitar, live on stage. Dylan was never considered a great singer, but that was never the point. Like Elvis before him, Dylan helped open doors for others to follow. I want to see the movie.

@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine I take your point. From this end, I will say that I own and enjoy about 10 Dylan albums and 5 box sets. I saw him live way back when Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers backed him up on tour and yet I do not truly qualify myself as a major fan as the catalogue is pretty hefty and I simply don't like all of it. I do have problems with these bio pics as I find that there are too many inaccuracies fighting 'dramatic licence' to fully enjoy what's on the screen. Also, if you have been aware of, say, Bob Dylan most of your life, there is so much information on him and real life footage in concerts, interviews and documentaries that it takes a lot of disbelief- suspension pills to really convince one of anything depicted in a dramatic film. I see this picture as trying to grab a young audience not familiar with this part of musical history.

Also, I’d skip this biopic and just watch I’m Not There from 2007
