Create and Save Custom Color Palettes in Inkscape

- In this tutorial I’ll be demonstrating how to save a custom color palette in Inkscape that can be used to replace the standard color palette. This will be done in such a way that it will be saved into your Inkscape installation files so you can load it and use it whenever you want.
Want to learn more about how Inkscape works? Check out the Inkscape Master Class - a comprehensive series of over 50 videos where I go over every tool, feature and function in Inkscape and explain what it is, how it works, and why it's useful: logosbynick.com/inkscape/
Intro song: "In Da Mood" by Combustibles, used with written permission
For anybody who need it :
The ordering by default is alphabetical of the hex code of the color, independent of how the shape in the SVG is set up. If you want to change it, you'd have to edit the gpl file using notepad or other text editor of your choice.
The name of the color palette can also be changed by editing the gpl file. In the file, by default, the name of the palette is the name of the file, but you can change the name in the file to something else entirely, it doesn't even need a .gpl extension in the end.
Broke my heart.
should be pinned.
Thanks for the explanation. I wondered why my color palettes are not in order. Now I can fix that.
i don't even use/own inkscape, i just think these videos are super interesting and weirdly relaxing 😭
It's a free download if you want to have it. inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.0/
I know what you mean, I lose time in a good way when watching the tutorials. 😁
So useful. It's now been so many times that I come to this channel and find exactly what I was looking for. What a way to stay on top of things. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've been having to learn this program for a project as I need vectors instead of rastors and you have been a HUGE help in that.
This tutorial is excellent, quickly, and clearly. It was very useful, a specialty for people who are beginners in the graphic design field, like me. Thank you for teaching me.
That is pretty cool. Thank you. Your InkScape tutorials are really great Nick.
Very cool - just made a custom palette. Your Inkscape course goes over so much, I couldn't remember where to find the one on creating swatches and custom palettes. This worked - thanks :)
Great post! I've been doing this by editing the palette file by hand - this is much easier!
Thank you. I really enjoy your channel. Your videos are very clear and easy to understand. Thank you.
Nice.
You rly helped my a lot improving the style of my channel.
Thanks a 1000 times for that!
Cheers
Jannis
Got the concept in 1 minute of scrolling through what felt like an hour video. THANK YOU!!!!
You videos are super helpful. Thank you so much for sharing them.
You do not know how much I love you...thanks man
Thank you my friend... Keep up with this incredible work... You have a new subscriber
Awesome! 🔥 I've been using Inkscape for years and this finally gave a straight forward way to get custom palettes in. INK is amazing - however - it is poor at enabling custom colors and fonts. Its a free program, so can't actually "complain" ... however ... going through a 15-20 minute project to make a custom palette is silly, when this is a basic function needed in any graphics program. As well as custom fonts: we could use a font manager to add them pre version 1.0. Now we have to load them into Windows ... take up memory .... and it is hit or miss if we can get any individual custom font to work even then 🤔
This is gold, thanks.
great trick. very useful
This video is exactly the information I was looking for. Thanks. New subscriber. Regards, from Sydney, Australia 🙂
So cool , thank you!
Great tip, thank you!
very helpful, thanks
Nice!! Thanks! I can use this for my safe printing colors on Printful. They have color swatches showing the RGB codes that will safely print. I will try setting up all the swatches or setting up palettes for different projects!
Hey Nick, could there be an option to add subtitles to your videos? Your tutorials are really competent and I do believe people like me would like to translate them into their native languages so they can be used by teachers and others.
Cool idea, I would also help out (with 2 languages). But also just found out that there is a possibility this to be done automatically:
support.google.com/youtube/answer/4792576?hl=en
So, Nick it might be an idea for you. Thank you for your great tutorials.
Thank you very informative.
Very usefull tutorial
I learned something new : You can hold the delete button on your keyboard and left click on its to instantly delete them.
awesome!
Thanks a lot!!!
Very Nice, thx a lot! Top
thank you!
Thank you for all your free resources Nick! I've just started looking for UX jobs, and I've noticed a lot of them ask for proficiency in Adobe Illustrator or "Industry tools such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop." I want to get better at UI design, and I'm interested in taking your Inkscape and GIMP courses. I was wondering, how quickly do you think someone who is proficient in Inkscape and GIMP could learn Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop if need be? Would it be an easy or difficult transition?
Never thought this was possible. Thanks a bunch!
Also, I see you have steam and battlenet installed. How big of a gamer are we?
Very very casual :)
Awesooooome! 😃😃😃
Hi Nick! Do you have a video up of creating custom patterns and saving them?
Man you rock on Inkscape!
useful for beginners
Nick your videos are good to learn. Could you make videos on quick use of ticks in Adobe illustrator.
Good video
Thanks for this straight forward tutorial, hopefully Inkscape can improve their software to make this process less convoluted. Surely I should just be able to press a '+' symbol and start adding my colours right? Why did they make this process so involved? Anyway, thanks all the same.
Wow! This is an outstanding explanation of how to create a color pallette, but is not anywhere near as user friendly as how easy it is to make a custom swatch in Adobe creative cloud. Many more steps to saving a swatch in Inkscape, unless I'm missing something. However, it is a free and open source program so.......... I like how it saves in the GIMP format so you can use it in both programs though.
Can you make a tutorial on how to add texture shading like effect in Inkscape to give it a more 3D look?
I just love the tutorials you make. Thanks!😊
Hey Nick! As allways, another excellent tuttorial. Thanks Again!!! I did, also, manage to put collors in order editing the text gpl file. I am, now, wondering if is it possible to import this gpl palette into Illustrator.
Folder search : you can go to Inkscape preferences -> system -> "user palettes", there is a button "open folder"
Hi Nick! Thank you so much for the tutorials. Since the update to 1.0, I have so many issues with inkscape closing out while working. Have you had any issues?
You explain much more than what the title suggest. For the working professional, it isn't ideal to have to click through the video to find the content that the title explains. Though that's probably not your target audience, I thought i'd mention it. I suggest offering a quick link that cuts to the chase.
Thank you for this tutorial. I use Inkscape 1.2.1 and the directory to place the .gpl file is in AppData\Roaming\inkscape\palettes folder
Thumbs UP!
Thanks Nick excellent video. I have used Corel Draw for many years, I am just learning Inkscape. My question is can I rename a color in a custom color pallette?
Thanks Nick it worked! Now I can create and add all my retro colour palettes. I assume it doesn't matter how big or small your colour grid is when creating it?
for naming the colors and arranging them in your own order open that gpl file in notepad from there you can change it
hope its useful
Any ideas on how to keep the colors from being randomized in the end? I'd like to get all my reds, blues, etc together from lightest to darkest values. It keeps mixing up the colors so that I have to search for them. Thanks!
ColoUr thank you very much
NIce!
I need your help! I am using Inkscape to create fonts, and some of the shapes that I am generating, even with Snap to Grid enabled and constant checking, the shapes seem to resize themselves by very small amounts that are impossible to notice, but build up over time as I have to reuse them to create new letters. For example, I'll be using a shape that is 24x24, but for some reason, will eventually become 23.998. Is there anyway I can disable Inkscape's ability to change the size of my objects?
Great vid, Nick, thanks! I have a question: in some video tutorials I’ve noticed that a palette can be placed on top of the page, on the upper border. How can I do that? I haven’t been able to figure it out. Thanks in advance!
I've never seen that before. I'm not sure.
Great tutorial Nick....is there anyway to name the colours though? In the default Inkscape palette, the primary colours such as red, blue, green etc have names
Hey Nick, I have an issue and I wanted to know your opinion and position in this. As of now I'm only working on logos or visual identity for clients that are mainly on social media, so everything is for a screen so Inkscape it's great, I don't have a problem with RGB but what if then any of my clients wants something for print like a business card or a brochure? I saw the video you made about CMYK on Inkscape and the options like Scribus, websites or even use Illustrator (this is a no-go for me as I use only Linux), can you really live using Scribus or a website for RGBtoCMYK? The extension for Linux is not there anymore BTW, what do you think I should do?
Great content. How do you make a color shine? I’m trying to use gold and give it a slight glare effect
You'd have to play with gradients to make that happen. I actually have a tutorial for that here: ua-cam.com/video/7hYf8CWkVJw/v-deo.html
Hey Nick 🙂
Which file formats should i save, when im making a logo to a client?
Usually they asks for .ai files. Ypu can mock it up saving as .pdf then renaming. It usually (90%) works.
Hi Nick, Do you have a video about how to convert .ase to .gpl? Thanks
Hi nick i want to ask to you, how to change dpi to ppi resolution image?
Thank's before
Hi, I really need your help. I created a custom compass for business but didn't realize the giga size of the whole object. Now I can't downsize it without shattering the quality and details
How did you get your interface black like that? Looks smooth.
I think you need to go to Edit>preferences>theme.
He made tutorial on that check it
My man has Steam in his taskbar. Noice 👍
What does the order of the colours depend on? I have found no correlation between the order of the colours in the drawing and the order of the colours in the pallette?
I couldn't figure it out, but I did want to change my order so I found an old inkscape forum message that told me to open the GPL in Notepad and reorder them and save. Which I did and now have them in the color order I like.
@@wilmadavenport479 I was just going to ask about this and then saw your post...thank you! I like them to be in the order of like colors vs. random...much easier to work with.
Good evening Nick..I ran into an issue using inkscape today I don't know if you've come across it before..when I try opening it it gives me "the preferences file c: is not a valid xml document.. please help.. thanks
What software do you use for screen recording?
OBS Studio
Hey Nick I have a question. How do I reduce the size of my fill and stroke menu? On my screen it is much larger and I see less of the project I'm working on. It didn't use to be like that
Mine too. And sometimes Inkscape only allows me to open one menu at once.
Have this problem too! It didn't use to be like this, now it takes a much larger portion of the screen :(
Are you not able to click and drag the edge of the menu to reduce the width of it?
@@LogosByNick I tried and I cannot
@@LogosByNick No, that's not possible. You can make it wider but you cannot narrow it down.
how can I apply pallets to a logot
Wow, I didn't know that! How do you name the colors? (I'm thinking of colourblind users here.) The "SVG" pallet shows the name of every color, by hovering with the mouse. Most others just show the code.
Such a helpful consideration.
A previous comment explained opening these files using any text editor, being careful to edit only after saving a backup copy.
SVG palette file, whose tool tip displayed the color name, listed an entry in the following form " 75 0 130 indigo (#4B0082)".
Another palette, whose tool tip displayed no color name , listed an entry in the following form " 43 0 0 #2B0000".
My interpretation is that any text in the fourth field will be the text displayed in the Inkscape palette tool tip. I assume that one could edit these files as desired. For naming reference, I have several websites bookmarked listing color names (proprietary & subjective) with HTML examples & values, sometimes both in RGB & in HSL, which I consult when trying to name color variations. A Google search should guide you to many of these.
Please make a scrivus playlist.
hey it's still 4 in the morning
How long have you lived in Philly?
I want glitter colour pallets.. Is it possible?
Hi Nick I'm using ink scape 1.0 but when I go to save as I do not have the option for gimp or.GPL do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong
You may not have administrator rights. Try exiting and right-clicking to open as administrator and see if that works.
@@wilmadavenport479 It did not work in the flie save as menu there is still on op to save the file as a .gpl file
That's weird. What if you just manually type in the .gpl extension for the name when saving?
@@LogosByNick I tried type in the ext & that didn't work so what I did was uninstall gimp & then reinstalled & that worked
hi nick,, please create video how to make .eps file (compatible with ai) ,,this help us to improve our business work with inkscape,,, thank you
Hey, I saw you have a file of CSGO skins, have you made skins for the game?
I've made some in the past with GIMP but I haven't tried to get them on the steam market. Just used them locally against bots.
How does this work with the pallet window? Or does it at all?
Are you referring to Swatches? This is totally different.
@@LogosByNick Ah yes. Ok, thanks.
Saw CMYK there...so Inkscape does support CMYK now?
Pls make a video on how to create mascot logo for gaming
My GIMP Palette shows RGBA codes and not CMYk codes so how do i name each color in my palette?
If you want to put the name of each color, open the file with Notepad and write like this:
GIMP Palette
Name: runypal
Columns: 0
#
255 255 255 white
255 245 139 yellow
thanks for the tip it was as useful as the video itself
i would like to add one more thing to it if anyone wants to change the sequance of the colors appearing in the pallet they can arrange it from the same text file
hope it was useful
I just have png palettes (even screenshots) outside of the page. It's quicker than having to go through menus, editing files, etc. Was hoping they had a more efficient (idiot proof really) way to do this.
Thank you, you can use "Generate Palette Extension"
inkscape.org/comments/cr/621/11353/#c20530
I'm using Mac
my, Inkscape looks way different than yours it also doesn't have many keys than you have in the upper part. plz, can you help?
Saving the palettes inside the program's folder is not recommended, especially if Inkscape is installed in your C: drive. The correct place for custom content is the Inkscape folder inside %appdata%, or some custom folder defined by the user. The folder the program's installed in should be left untouched.
For Windows users, don't save custom files in your installation folder. Instead save it in your user data: %AppData%\inkscape\palettes
Luv your videos but, too much today
Classic narcissist Nick using his logo as his desktop. Granted it looks nice.
Really, is there no way of saving our colors as we're using the Inkscape? That app can't have such lack. This is garbage.
how to fix optimization in this trash software?!
