    i am so happy Grace is home. Put her to work! And I love the detail walk through the Barn. It is impressive what you have built...and the thought process for each decision.

    What a wonderful setup! Glad to see you have a horse again. I look forward to seeing how she helps out around the new place.

    I really like your channel. I found you guys a little over a week ago and started watching from the beginning. When you talked about making the clay soil in the saw mill area into a garden I thought about a book I read in the 70's, by Ruth Stout. Now that Grace is back I'll mention it. First you plant Rye and plow it under when it's done. The next crop is Barley, it is plowed under. The last crop is alfalfa.

    Really appreciate the stall & paddock design walkthrough. Great information, great suggestions for hay & mineral feeders & for creating more steps between shelter & water. I used similar ideas years ago when designing shelter for my horse. I'm sharing this with friends who are designing their small barn & 1-2 horse training areas, pasture & paddocks. Blessings from NW Florida.

    Great to see you got Grace back. I was wondering throughout the video why you had set up your horse stalls before your house was finished. Actually, I kind of liked Grace - she wasn't as scary as the other big beasts. And finally, I liked this video far more than the previous one - I don't think I ever need to see another goat being born. I watched one of my cats doing it once and, for the life of me, I have no idea why I watched that video to the end. I knew the goat was going to be ok, otherwise, you wouldn't have posted the video.

    Lovely setup with so many well thought-out details. I'm not sure what your climate is like, but I'm curious about those gate latches in the winter, if it drops below freezing? I'm currently in eastern Ontario, where we get long winters with a lot of ice. My gelding is pretty handy at opening gates, and I find it tough to find safe, secure latches that won't freeze shut in the winter! I love the look of yours; I wonder if it would work in my climate?

      We are in IL. My latches haven’t been through a winter yet, and we may have issues for the coming winter since we won’t have our roof shelter built yet. Later, when we do get the extension built, they will be able to stay dry. I have certainly been through my fair share of bitter winters in the Rocky Mountains, and Really, the key is to keep any latch, snap, or hook dry to keep it functioning in winter. It’s the moisture that freezes.

    My suggestion: install fire alarms & sprinkler system. My grandmother's barn caught fire one night during a horse show. Many beautiful horses died. It was awful!

      Excellent idea for boarding barns! This risk is one reason I try to always avoid having a horse “trapped” inside a barn stall. If I have to use a stall, like these, it has a free-choice outdoor run attached!

    Do you have a link for the flexible hooks and slide latches?

    How did it hold up?

    • @ADifferentWay
      @ADifferentWay  10 місяців тому +1

      So far, so good! I don’t know if you’re talking about something specific, or just a Stall set up in general, the only real issue I’ve had so far is a couple of screws breaking, and needing replaced. Since building it roughly 18 months ago, this set up has housed a resident draft horse, and temporarily, 19 wild horses and one burro in our TIP program. The mangers held up beautifully, despite having one large Mustang cast against one and the burro attempting to jump into it, as well as receiving quite a bit of abuse from pawing and bumping into them. After that many animals, only one outside run shows notable signs of chew marks, and most of that came from a young horse that arrived with strangles and was quarantined in the stall for 6 weeks. The only change I would make, and probably will in the future, would be to add some type of gate I can close to shut the stall off from the run. I work the wild horses in their runs more often than I expected, and they tend to run inside the stall to hide. This would likely not be an issue with domestic horses. Hope that helps!

    Can you please give me the dimensions of the 3-sided walled feeder?

    • @ADifferentWay
      @ADifferentWay  3 місяці тому +1

      The rough dimensions are 3 panels, each about 29” long by 16” wide (on the outside). The edges of the center panel are cut at an angle. When assembled, the panels are pointed on legs about 2-3 off the mat, and the center panel is roughly 30” from the corner. I am in love with the design! I selected these measurements to be just below chest level on the average horse. I have one a little higher for draft horses, and would go shorter if so had a lot of smaller horses. Hope that helps!
