  • Never was so much owed by so many to so few was a wartime speech made by the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill on 20 August 1940. The name stems from the specific line in the speech, Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few, referring to the ongoing efforts of the Royal Air Force pilots who were at the time fighting the Battle of Britain, the pivotal air battle with the German Luftwaffe with Britain expecting a German invasion. With the battle won a few months later and German plans postponed, the Allied airmen of the battle ultimately became known as "The Few".

70 years ago Britain stood alone. An island nation with it's back against the wall. With the help of brave solos who managed to escape main land Europe French, Polish and many more. British and Canadian pilots climbed into planes and fought the battle of Britain. We thank them and will always remember them.

You forgot to include RAF F.S. 71, 121, and 133 Squadrons (American Eagles). Yes,made up of American Volunteers some who were also Veterans of the Battle of Britain. After America entered the War they transferred into the 334th, 335th, and 336th Fighter Group with the USAAF.

Maxxximussuper FYI I may be wrong but the american American Eagles flew escort missions in the atlantic not in the battle of britan? as far as i know it was a total of 11 pilots.. But forget all of that, they are very brave men as the only way to get in would have been to lie about were they were from most of the ones listed were part of the british empire or in the war before hand. very brave..

Sir Winston Churchill is one of the mightiest figures to ever walk the stage of world affairs. He was tough, brash, no-nonsense and had a great sense of moral good and justice about him. He openly and boldly defied a great and terrible power which threatened his island, and when the people of Britain looked desperately to their leaders for strength and courage and inspiration, Churchill gave them all that and more, and they knew the war could be won because Winston Churchill had their back. May he rest in peace. A great statesman whose like may never again be seen.
    RIP sir. God bless you.

Amazing comments. The reality is that, even though Churchill was never one to shy away from conflict, he warned of the growing threat of Hitler, and he did so against the backdrop of people who didn't have the same fortitude that he possessed. He took a broken and demoralised country, after the debacle in 1940 and retreat from Dunkirk, to victory, and most importantly, as he always said, he defended our island home. Historians have long debated his motivations. I would say that his multiple strokes under the pressure of leading the country in war time give the most clear view of how much it mean to him. I would also say that, when he died the dockers in London (hard men) lowering their cranes in respect showed that irrespective of his nobility background he is seen as the most important figure in our countries history.

Not all immigrants are violent it is only a small number that are, and I'll think you'll find that actually everyone is an immigrant if you look into the past. Americans orginate from the Irish and British, The English originate from the Italians I.e. the Roman Empire and so on. And it's not there fault that there is loads of immigrants coming in look to your own leaders of today they are the one's to blame.

To all this who see Churchill as an evil man with no redemption, I said to you that you have never experienced a conflict like that he faced, you have never understood war and likely never will until you see the death it caused. Without Churchill, Britain would have lost the war. He inspired millions, keeping morale high and the will to fight for freedom even higher. Yes, he had views that would be frowned upon nowadays but who cares, seriously, who cares. These views were normal back then and the stupid of the world fail to understand this. Calling Churchill a man of no morals is to be selfish and ignorant to everything he did for this country, and to think these things is simply to have no respect or understanding for what he did for this country. Winston Churchill, you are one fo the greatest men of all time, and on behalf of those grateful, I thank you. We would not be here today if it were not for you

The comparison is very clear; the one praised liberty and dignity of the individuals (every one of them, as being a man and a G's creature), with a particular attention and compassion and care for the weak and poor; The other, praised the supremacy of the stronger over the weak, by every mean, by their total subjugation and repression of their freedom and dignity;

It was so big a difference, that the Nazis actually changed strategies when it came to Britain and started to bomb what he could get to. Which they had not previously done in any other conflict. This was the first time the German Wehrmacht had truly met their 'match' so to speak.

: / So betrayl, genocide and rudeness are now core British values? He didn't prove that Britain could take on the world, he proved that ww1 crippled Britain and that it needed help to survive. During the battle of Britain he at first didn't allow for foreign pilots to fly. The Luftwaffe was winning and as a last resort he let them fly. Then, the battle was won. He is as much of a legend as Stalin, Hitler and Franklin D Roosevelt. All being absolute bastards. You didn't conquer the Third Reich, it was a team effort. You speak of the Germans as a sort of bogeyman. An ultimate evil. Even though during the height of your empire you were no better and also you sided with the Soviet Union during the war, a nation that was much worse by every means. A great man? Most of the speeches from which these extracts are drawn were quite lengthy and detailed. He always tried to paint a balanced and complete picture of events from the information available to him, sometimes in his qualifications and caveats seeming to contradict what he had just said or was about to. Notwithstanding the inspiring perorations that are so renowned, he made few concessions to the understanding and attention span of his audience, including the public. It's true that some of the worst disasters such as warship sinkings were hidden from view (and I can remember the impact they had on a much smaller scale during the Falklands war - a ship sunk was one of the most shocking things). Still with Churchill there wasn't a trace of the dumbing down or facile glosses or wishful thinking we are accustomed to today. Yet everyone crowded round the wireless and hung on his words. How today's politicians have coped, or not, with the pandemic is hardly an edifying spectacle. How they would match up to a global war - if it wasn't all over in the first few minutes - doesn't bear thinking about.

Makes you wonder.... At the end of the war, that last sentance means even more...
If the RAF had lost, invasion WAS coming, and lets face it, we would have lost, we would fight to the last, but we would eventually have lost. Then what? No Britain means the US supply ships stop - The same ships that were attacked to bring the US into the European war...

I'd have to say that Pearl Harbour still would have happened, and due to the alliance between Japan and Germany, I'd say that the US would have been forced to fight germany. Plus, it's not as though the brits had nowhere to retreat to, even if it were just the navy heading to iceland the war would have been far from over.

The Americans were on the verge of joining the winning side as is. Had Britain gone under, they wouldn't have bothered and would've just signed over a treaty. There'd have been no need for the Pearl Harbour attack as we'd have been beaten within a week of the RAF losing the channel skies.
The Russians would never have gotten to their feet properly, if they did they probably could've taken on Germany still as it was pretty much all Russian work in Europe that won the war there anyway. We only faced a marginal percentage of the total German armed forces in Western Europe. The Ruskies took on something like 80% of them.

I'd like to tell you about my new book, "WHEN LIONS ROAR: The Churchills and the Kennedys" which contains several startling political revelations.
WHEN LIONS ROAR is the first book to reveal the remarkable relationship between these two internationally famous families over four decades. It’s already made news around the world about Churchill and the A-bomb, and gained excellent reviews from the critics, including The Washington Post, USA Today, Library Journal, and selected as an Amazon Best Book of the Month (History). Time magazine’s excerpt of this book reveals how Winston Churchill and FDR's son were involved in the 1933 British liquor deal won by Joe Kennedy as Prohibition was ending. I recently chatted about this shady Kennedy-Churchill-Roosevelt political deal with Joe and Mike on TV’s Morning Joe.
WHEN LIONS ROAR explores the many dramatic connections between the two ambitious families of Winston Churchill and John F. Kennedy. It is a sprawling saga that involves two wars, Nazi and Vatican spying, White House political intrigue, plenty of sex, and a tremendous story about ambition, loyalties, betrayal and the search for greatness among fathers, sons and the remarkable women in their lives.
    All best, Thomas Maier

I talked with a (American) veteran about his time. He was in England prior to US involvement. He and his twin operated a anti aircraft gun. Said sometimes the knocked a buzz bomb enough that it would reverse course. They stopped shooting at it and let it fly back.

my grandfather fought in the battle of france and was evacuated at dunkirk after living in a hole for 3 days with no food or water. I owe it to him, my forebearers, for my peers and future children to fight against Germany or any other foe should they try to take our or our friends freedom once more. I think the EU is a form of tyranny and I will fight it, fight it until it no longer oppresses any english or other man.

It’s quite embarrassing how far we have fallen in less than 100 years.

It really annoys be how every single one of these classic speeches just turns into who did what in the war, can't we all just chill and appreciate the speech and the men giving them?

I very much agree with you - I don't mean to take anything away from the tiny amounts of foreign soldiers that fled to Britain to continue the fight, but it was Britain as an entire nation that stood. If we'd fallen the minority of foreign armies that kept fighting wouldn't have had a haven to come to.
And, if Britain fell I doubt the Germans would have lost on their Eastern fronts.
