Never was so much owed by so many to so few - Winston Churchill Speeches

- Never was so much owed by so many to so few was a wartime speech made by the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill on 20 August 1940. The name stems from the specific line in the speech, Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few, referring to the ongoing efforts of the Royal Air Force pilots who were at the time fighting the Battle of Britain, the pivotal air battle with the German Luftwaffe with Britain expecting a German invasion. With the battle won a few months later and German plans postponed, the Allied airmen of the battle ultimately became known as "The Few".
70 years ago Britain stood alone. An island nation with it's back against the wall. With the help of brave solos who managed to escape main land Europe French, Polish and many more. British and Canadian pilots climbed into planes and fought the battle of Britain. We thank them and will always remember them.
You forgot to include RAF F.S. 71, 121, and 133 Squadrons (American Eagles). Yes,made up of American Volunteers some who were also Veterans of the Battle of Britain. After America entered the War they transferred into the 334th, 335th, and 336th Fighter Group with the USAAF.
Maxxximussuper Thank you for the information. But I did say (and many more) Meaning From all over the world.
THANK YOU Andrew. These same commenters I fear are about to destroy the United Kingdom and it makes me inconsolable that they are so stupid and ungrateful. They have NO Idea what was done to protect Scotland and it means nothing to them, I take it. Pillocks!
Maxxximussuper FYI I may be wrong but the american American Eagles flew escort missions in the atlantic not in the battle of britan? as far as i know it was a total of 11 pilots.. But forget all of that, they are very brave men as the only way to get in would have been to lie about were they were from most of the ones listed were part of the british empire or in the war before hand. very brave..

Yeah. Plus the Battle of Britain itself was commanded by a Kiwi and had a large number of Kiwi air aces fighting it.
I am an American Veteran and Citizen; My daughter Jessica has and is still serving our country at this moment. 9 year's and counting! Winston Churchill's character, service and wisdom has always Inspired me! I have shared his speehes, actions and amazing record of service with my children and friends. He should have been tried for the sinking of RMS Lusitania.
"Never was so much owed by so many to so few" gives me goose bumps every time
It doesn't matter what anyone on this message board says, the fact remains that "Never was so much owed by so many to so few"

This was not a British victory, but an Allied one, a shame the Brits forgot those that fought for them after the war and gave in to a Soviet Dicksucking fest, understandable but also unforgivable.
total bs they would be ashamed of the right wing extremist scum.Thankfully the red army is rising and Putin / Xi are the future.
Makes me proud to be British. Having been born in the 80s my grandparents never let me forget the hardship they suffered during the war. I gained a window into our history from them and I will make sure that my children and grandchildren will always remember what they fought for!
Don't forget that Winston Churchill set up concentration camps around Africa
Well said
Sir Winston Churchill is one of the mightiest figures to ever walk the stage of world affairs. He was tough, brash, no-nonsense and had a great sense of moral good and justice about him. He openly and boldly defied a great and terrible power which threatened his island, and when the people of Britain looked desperately to their leaders for strength and courage and inspiration, Churchill gave them all that and more, and they knew the war could be won because Winston Churchill had their back. May he rest in peace. A great statesman whose like may never again be seen.
RIP sir. God bless you.
We need a Churchill today.
He dropped chemical weapons on iraqi civilians

Amazing comments. The reality is that, even though Churchill was never one to shy away from conflict, he warned of the growing threat of Hitler, and he did so against the backdrop of people who didn't have the same fortitude that he possessed. He took a broken and demoralised country, after the debacle in 1940 and retreat from Dunkirk, to victory, and most importantly, as he always said, he defended our island home. Historians have long debated his motivations. I would say that his multiple strokes under the pressure of leading the country in war time give the most clear view of how much it mean to him. I would also say that, when he died the dockers in London (hard men) lowering their cranes in respect showed that irrespective of his nobility background he is seen as the most important figure in our countries history.
They got payed to lower them.
Matthew Berry Source?
Funnily enough 10 minutes before I read your comment I was watching the one show with Jeremy paxman and it showed a clip of the recent upcoming documentary about churchill. Paxman interviews a former crane driver, he explains all.

A Great man indeed
These men went into war with little chance of surviving it. And thank god we had a statesman to convey their courage to the rest of us.
Politicians are hated. But when you elevate to a statesman, a real one, that’s where God lives. That man is a champion of those heroes and beyond their families, the one who projects them into eternity.
Makes you proud to be British - Winston Churchill.

Sadly, leaders that compare to Churchill are in short supply.
Agreed, we need more people who hate the disabled.
And also save the country from destruction.
What these men did for us should *NEVER* be forgotten. The debt we owe them is eternal.
Eternally grateful for what they did for us.
Thank to all the young lads that fought with gallantry against the worst menace the world ever faced. Thank to all of them that died for it. I will never forget all of you.
Long live the mighty RAF, all the foreign fighters helping the brits and now, so many years after the conflict, respect to all the young men who lost their life or suffered injuries over the battle torn skies of Europe and the Pacific.
hardymarci Bravo to Churchill and all you have stated above! Well said..

Rory Peers Yeah but Your Fighter wasn't the first Operational one. the Me-262 was. Sorry bro the Krauts get that award
King Oxymoron yeah, it was operational, so operational that it had to have its engines replaced after every flight. If you were flying the thing for longer than three hours, you were safer to just bail out, because the engines were a whisker away from blowing up at any moment after three hours.
Elberiver11 Last time I read a history book, which is something I strongly suggest that you should try, the ONE PERSON RESPONSIBLE for dragging the whole world into war was a 41 year old failed painter who was paranoid, had delusions of persecution, was probably bi-polar, and had a very unnatural love for his 15 year old niece, can you guess whom I am talking about? Here's a hint: He wrote a book that wasn't about camping, called "Mein Kampf" Yes, you guessed it! The man eternally dammed to suck Satan's greasy cock in HELL you know - Adolph Hitler!
Still remembered,still revered
Still hated by people like me though.
You should not hate him.
Turning point in WW2 which means the world we live in now is because of what those guys did don't ever underestimate that
George Walser yeah they did, they saved us from German occupation of which the world could be a much darker place right now. I don't know what your on about, yes we do have freedom of speech as anyone can say what they want freely. Not all immigrants are violent it is only a small number that are, and I'll think you'll find that actually everyone is an immigrant if you look into the past. Americans orginate from the Irish and British, The English originate from the Italians I.e. the Roman Empire and so on. And it's not there fault that there is loads of immigrants coming in look to your own leaders of today they are the one's to blame.

Salute to legendary 303 squadron - never was so much owed by so many to so few.
To all this who see Churchill as an evil man with no redemption, I said to you that you have never experienced a conflict like that he faced, you have never understood war and likely never will until you see the death it caused. Without Churchill, Britain would have lost the war. He inspired millions, keeping morale high and the will to fight for freedom even higher. Yes, he had views that would be frowned upon nowadays but who cares, seriously, who cares. These views were normal back then and the stupid of the world fail to understand this. Calling Churchill a man of no morals is to be selfish and ignorant to everything he did for this country, and to think these things is simply to have no respect or understanding for what he did for this country. Winston Churchill, you are one fo the greatest men of all time, and on behalf of those grateful, I thank you. We would not be here today if it were not for you
Totally agree with you
Some of the comments on this video are just ridiculously funny, others are absolutely disgraceful. The men who fought on land, at sea and in the air deserve our respect for their tremendous courage and bravery. We should never forget.
PhillipedeJousseneau Have you learned the facts of life of W Churchill? Have you compared his values and leads to those of A.Hitler? The comparison is very clear; the one praised liberty and dignity of the individuals (every one of them, as being a man and a G's creature), with a particular attention and compassion and care for the weak and poor; The other, praised the supremacy of the stronger over the weak, by every mean, by their total subjugation and repression of their freedom and dignity;
PhillipedeJousseneau Yeah. Those brave Nazi's. Killing those millions of pesky innocent people who were either their own countrymen or men defending their own countries from illegitimate invasion.

Honor Winston Churchill on the 75th anniversary of the AirBattle of Britain
He said this yet I don't know if he knew how much the people of Britain owed him for his inspiring speeches and strategies that he devised even when he saw what odds we were up against he stayed strong for the people of Britain. He got us through the war, not alone of course but he gave us enough of a moral boost to keep us from even thinking of surrender
Umm yeah, that changed. There were actually plans found that involved the shipping of British men to work in their factories.
Don't ever ,EVER, mess with the Brits.... They are as peace loving as any....and will fight, at any length, to keep it that way...
they have a long history of fighting to keep the peace....sounds crazy, but is true

***** i didn't deny that. The brits still gave a good fight to the fascists and were winning on their front
***** Accused because they did it. 11 million jews, gypsies, slavs, POWs, danish teachers, french freedom fighters, political opponents and other non-aryans that the nazi's didn't agree with were all sent to the extermination camps. To put this into perspective, British airmen were sleeping 4 hours and going back up to fight, they had 1/4 rest of their German counterparts but were downing 3/4 their airplanes. At this point in the war, Britain was alone and they fought alone.
Show some bloody respect.
Reminds me of Ukraine at the moment. Britain stood alone once too.

He is indeed referring only to British Soldiers, specifically the Royal Air Force which was extraordinarily small in comparison to the massive German Luftwaffe. It was so big a difference, that the Nazis actually changed strategies when it came to Britain and started to bomb what he could get to. Which they had not previously done in any other conflict. This was the first time the German Wehrmacht had truly met their 'match' so to speak.

: / Comedy 10/10
Winston Churchill upheld the core British values and proved the Brit’s could take on the world. It’s not comedy, he is an historical legend in his own right. And will forever be remembered as the man who got our little island to concur and defeat a much bigger force in Europe. A great man in his own right.
: / So betrayl, genocide and rudeness are now core British values? He didn't prove that Britain could take on the world, he proved that ww1 crippled Britain and that it needed help to survive. During the battle of Britain he at first didn't allow for foreign pilots to fly. The Luftwaffe was winning and as a last resort he let them fly. Then, the battle was won. He is as much of a legend as Stalin, Hitler and Franklin D Roosevelt. All being absolute bastards. You didn't conquer the Third Reich, it was a team effort. You speak of the Germans as a sort of bogeyman. An ultimate evil. Even though during the height of your empire you were no better and also you sided with the Soviet Union during the war, a nation that was much worse by every means. A great man? Tell that to the families of Indians he starved to death.
My mom was RAF in the second world war - the RAF saved civilization.
Laughing my ass off at the comment section once again. I'm seeing people talking about the British Empire's atrocoties before WW2. Yes, they are true, but every country in Europe has been responsible for war crimes. But what's the point over insulting a great person like Churchill over something that happened maybe even before his office as prime minister? You don't see me insulting Obama over what his cowboy hat-wearing conservative gunslinging predecessor did to hundreds or thousands of innocent Iraqis.
What's the point of judging a person for what others did in the past anyway?
That's false! I'm proud to report that Luxembourg was never involved in any war crimes.
Sorry, I meant ''almost'' every country, but you know what I mean. lol

Dean Kaye Btw,In Reddit most of these comments would have been deleted because the majority is opinion and not fact.
Most of the speeches from which these extracts are drawn were quite lengthy and detailed. He always tried to paint a balanced and complete picture of events from the information available to him, sometimes in his qualifications and caveats seeming to contradict what he had just said or was about to. Notwithstanding the inspiring perorations that are so renowned, he made few concessions to the understanding and attention span of his audience, including the public. It's true that some of the worst disasters such as warship sinkings were hidden from view (and I can remember the impact they had on a much smaller scale during the Falklands war - a ship sunk was one of the most shocking things). Still with Churchill there wasn't a trace of the dumbing down or facile glosses or wishful thinking we are accustomed to today. Yet everyone crowded round the wireless and hung on his words. How today's politicians have coped, or not, with the pandemic is hardly an edifying spectacle. How they would match up to a global war - if it wasn't all over in the first few minutes - doesn't bear thinking about.
Makes you wonder.... At the end of the war, that last sentance means even more...
If the RAF had lost, invasion WAS coming, and lets face it, we would have lost, we would fight to the last, but we would eventually have lost. Then what? No Britain means the US supply ships stop - The same ships that were attacked to bring the US into the European war...
The Ruskies would have had to face the full might of the Nazis on their own.
I'd have to say that Pearl Harbour still would have happened, and due to the alliance between Japan and Germany, I'd say that the US would have been forced to fight germany. Plus, it's not as though the brits had nowhere to retreat to, even if it were just the navy heading to iceland the war would have been far from over.
The Americans were on the verge of joining the winning side as is. Had Britain gone under, they wouldn't have bothered and would've just signed over a treaty. There'd have been no need for the Pearl Harbour attack as we'd have been beaten within a week of the RAF losing the channel skies.
The Russians would never have gotten to their feet properly, if they did they probably could've taken on Germany still as it was pretty much all Russian work in Europe that won the war there anyway. We only faced a marginal percentage of the total German armed forces in Western Europe. The Ruskies took on something like 80% of them.
Yeah and we never would have gotten the US ships to supply Russia without a base on your island.
Stinger Bee No, you're forgetting that the whole pacific was useable.
Yes at a much greater cost. And there was this little minor detail of the Japanese...
Two world wars, millions of lives lost so that we would never be dictated to by anyone in Europe. What would Churchill make of what this country has become. We need a leader like him now, a man with backbone and one who would put our great nation first.
Hitler declared war on Russia and lost. He declared war on America and lost. Germany lost their war, badly and emphatically. End of story. Opinions are welcome nonetheless

I'd like to tell you about my new book, "WHEN LIONS ROAR: The Churchills and the Kennedys" which contains several startling political revelations.
WHEN LIONS ROAR is the first book to reveal the remarkable relationship between these two internationally famous families over four decades. It’s already made news around the world about Churchill and the A-bomb, and gained excellent reviews from the critics, including The Washington Post, USA Today, Library Journal, and selected as an Amazon Best Book of the Month (History). Time magazine’s excerpt of this book reveals how Winston Churchill and FDR's son were involved in the 1933 British liquor deal won by Joe Kennedy as Prohibition was ending. I recently chatted about this shady Kennedy-Churchill-Roosevelt political deal with Joe and Mike on TV’s Morning Joe.
WHEN LIONS ROAR explores the many dramatic connections between the two ambitious families of Winston Churchill and John F. Kennedy. It is a sprawling saga that involves two wars, Nazi and Vatican spying, White House political intrigue, plenty of sex, and a tremendous story about ambition, loyalties, betrayal and the search for greatness among fathers, sons and the remarkable women in their lives.
All best, Thomas Maier
How today, we miss the calibre of his leadership. 🇬🇧
bangers and mash "yum"
This chokes me up every time I hear it. Much Respect to the RAF and God you all.
Too Right! R.I.P To All The Lost Pilot's.... And Thank You All.
regarding the situation, its one of the greatest quotes of all time
I'm surprised at how many don't know the true History. Churchill was one the most influential Leaders of the 20th century. His actions and inspirations to the British were invaluable . Yes War is Hell. Freedom isn't Free. Good men, women and children died when a Maniac decided he wanted to rule the world.
Even my grandad lived through the war and he still remembers how hard it was to survive not to mention that if you wanted to bake anything like a cake you had to save a whole month worth of sugar rations just for 1 cake yet most people think the 70’s onwards were rough but compared to the war years everything since is light as you weren’t allowed to let light shine from your window at night and got into a lot of shit if you did they literally had people go around the streets at night to check and fine anyone who showed even a speck of light from their windows at night but luckily we haven’t had things quite as bad as they did in the war
Not as a Brit but as an American. Both our countries have since changed WWII and not always for the best. I wanted to listen to a speech made in a time of great peril to great Britain and the world. I find the speech an amazing salute to the RAF
I'm proud to be British 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I wish I would be British, too, Sir!
Thank God for Churchill and the British forces and civilians for their heroic "Stand Alone". The price they paid was incredible.
I talked with a (American) veteran about his time. He was in England prior to US involvement. He and his twin operated a anti aircraft gun. Said sometimes the knocked a buzz bomb enough that it would reverse course. They stopped shooting at it and let it fly back.
We won that war but we’re losing the one we’re fighting just now Britain is broken heartbreaking to watch 😢🇬🇧🇬🇧
The smartest, and most Man in the World. We need more of them. And so they shall be. God Bless.
my grandfather fought in the battle of france and was evacuated at dunkirk after living in a hole for 3 days with no food or water. I owe it to him, my forebearers, for my peers and future children to fight against Germany or any other foe should they try to take our or our friends freedom once more. I think the EU is a form of tyranny and I will fight it, fight it until it no longer oppresses any english or other man.
This is so great! It makes you want to cry and stand up and cheer !!!
Never in the course of human history was such a great battle expressed so memorably in so few words.
A message from Winnie in todays world from above.
It’s quite embarrassing how far we have fallen in less than 100 years.
It really annoys be how every single one of these classic speeches just turns into who did what in the war, can't we all just chill and appreciate the speech and the men giving them?
This praise should now be dedicated to brave Ukrainian people fighting against Russian invasion. Their are fighting not only for themselves but also for free and peace-loving people in the entire world. 🇺🇦💪
To many of us, Sir Winston Churchill is still our Prime Minister 🏴
We need leaders like this man today . We are lead these days by criminals and idiots
One of The Few- Possibly the last one- Paddy Hemingway , celebrated his 105th birthday in Summer 2024.
I very much agree with you - I don't mean to take anything away from the tiny amounts of foreign soldiers that fled to Britain to continue the fight, but it was Britain as an entire nation that stood. If we'd fallen the minority of foreign armies that kept fighting wouldn't have had a haven to come to.
And, if Britain fell I doubt the Germans would have lost on their Eastern fronts.
Churchill probably saved humanity as we know it -
