When I was in high school, a language teacher gave us sheets with different speeches written but without the names of who gave it, and told us to choose which one we thought was the best. The whole class chose Hitler's.

@Bruce wayne Oh, wow. A man born in the 1800s believed something almost everyone believed at the time. What a shock. At least he never acted on racist beliefs. Not everything Britain took from India was stolen. For example, the Kohinoor diamond was given to Britain. British control of the region stopped countless wars between the various groups in India. While British control wasn’t exactly a gift from God, it did have perks. Many Indians actually liked being part of the Raj as many of them held high positions in its government. Churchill had to pull food to help troops. He also pulled Indian soldiers to help the war effort. Other parts of India could have helped by rationing food and giving a little to Bengal. It wouldn’t save all Indians, but a good amount. Churchill helped and basically ended the Bengali Famine.
Hitler and Churchill were geniuses of public speech. I speak French and English fluently so it is easier for me to appreciate Churchill`s skills but I remain mesmerized by some of Hitler`s speeches. I would put him 1st or 2nd. In addition, these two guys wrote their own speeches.

this video got the meaning of orators wrong! any speaker read from papers cannot be considred "orator" . Orator is a speaker who can speak from his mind and can make an effective speach with even preparation.

I'm assuming it's hard to give credit when we don't have video or audio of his speeches. Cicero was the exception in this list I think because it says a lot that he's still so highly regarded two thousand years later.
I know, but this is only the top 10. Had it been top 15 or so, it would be outrageous to exclude him.
@Jeepman89 - - Powerful doesn't require one to sound like FDR or JFK. Lincoln talked his way into the White House with a new political party, won the Civil War, and ended slavery. Eloquence is more important than volume. I'd argue that Barack Obama is a better orator than Jesse Jackson because his words were even better.

Jim Jim he was aggressive. But he had a flow and rhythm as well which maximised impact. MLK and hitler spoke for different things so they spoke differently. MLK promotes compassion while Hilter promoted anger. If you knew the German and listened closely, you’d find the piercing sounds and bellows of hitlers speeches actually make them sound like an anthem, which was fucking atmospheric and hypnotising.

It astonished me, however, to find that his poses and his phrases were assiduously studied. The biography of "his" photographer -- who has their own photographer? -- talls us that ever degree and tremor of every fist-shake was rehearsed. His hip sways and turnings were practiced in front of mirrors and studied on celluloid before they were spent on the masses.

Fun facts, Churchill memorised all his speeches, the times he had notes, he rarely used them.
He often spoke after a decent amount of alcohol had been ingested during the day
He was notably known for his sarcasm and humour
Even past 70 years, he gave some speeches past 30 minutes long.

Danny Wolf there is something so eloquent and appealing about his speeches that seems to be lacking in British politics today. I’m no supporter of the British union of Fascists but you can see why Mosley appealed to a certain part of the British public in Pre-war Britain.

My wife was on the crew of the movie Inside the Third Reich. Derek Jacobi played Hitler and studied his movements and speech. She told me that after the scene where Hitler addresses the students in Munich, the entire set became silent so well had Jacobi copied Hitler.

Both Sir Winston and Herr Hitler deserve the top spot. They both had a flair for using classical rhetorical devices. Two of history's greatest orators - one employed words to spread terror and tyranny; the other to liberate mankind from the clutches of tyranny.
I only watched this a few minutes ago but I am amazed that there weren't more English or Indo-European speakers throughout.

I know that there is not a lot of footage for the speeches of Vladimir Lenin, but I still think that he deserves a spot on this list. If you watch some of the videos of him speaking you instantly notice both his body language, the words he chose and the way in which he delivered them. After all, he was a main contributor when it came to raising the Russian people into revolution.

General Mac Arthur should be on this list. His "Old Soldiers" speech to congress in 1951 after his firing by President Truman was epic and brilliantly delivered.

Ghandi and Nelson Mandela and Hitler are about the farthest thing from American. As to why English is so dominant, it's because they are really pulling from recorded speakers and between England and the US they have without question culturally dominated the globe in the last 150 years

Naziism would have been a minor movement without Hitler's power at the microphone, so he should have been #1. And if people object to putting such a criminal at #1, I would point to the important lesson that this teaches: distrust great oratory. And on this subject, Leon Trotsky was a legendary speechmaker, which played an important role in the founding and success of the Red Army during the Civil War (1918-1920). He should have been high on this list.
He is one of the cause of cannibalism in europe, when a peasant asl help from trotsky he says "You are starving? This is not famine yet, when your woman starting eating their children then you may come and say we are starving" . A words of him, disgusting and not even legendary to say.
The one i miss the most on this list is Demosthenes. Already during the ancient times he was seen as the foremost of all orators and his contribution to rhetoric is almost unmatched. Even Cicero admired his speeches and much of what i you learn in school about rhetoric is from him. And his speeches have survived to our days.

It would have been better to leave out Cicero and then make the list the greatest orators of the 20th Century. The reason I say this is because to include all times would be considering all people of all nations. For example, at least one or two of the Chinese Emperors should be on your list, as well as some Christian and Catholic preachers from the last two thousand years. Instead, you made a list that, with one notable exception, is pretty much limited to the 20th Century. So it really is a list of the most impressive or greatest orators of the 20th Century.

The power of the spoken word cannot be underestimated.
I remember being an edgy boy in college and making the MLK/Hitler comparison in terms of the skillful orator/charismatic leader thing. I don't know if anyone was offended/shocked, or if they were too young, apathetic, and dumb to hear or understand what I was saying, lol. Everyone's eyes were kinda perpetually glazed over at the community college.
ww2 oddly was the most amazing moment in history even with all the bloodshed. So many amazing leaders rallying their countries to be on top.
A lady I knew who was one of the finest intellect/scholar and United Nations Under Secretary told a fellow diplomat that Fidel Castro had the most disciplined mind of any human of whom she was aware. She heard him speak for 3 1/2 hours. He never repeated himself once, never consulted a note, and every sentence was a new idea. Fidel did not need speech writers like Kennedy and the mentioned Americans with the exception of Abraham Lincoln. Fidel’s “History Will Absolve Me” and his 1979 UN address on behalf of the Non Aligned Movement are but two of the many immortal speeches that adorned his illustrious life. I heard Fidel speak live on several occasions and I have read and watched on public media some of those American “greatest orators” of history. Not one can match him. With such a self righteous culture is it any wonder that Donald Trump is already claiming to be the most successful US president ever.

I'm surprised Kennedy is placed above Roosevelt. JFK used clever and familiar tools in his speeches, such as the rule of three. But for sheer power, tone and oratory, I really think FDR is so much better. Hell it's because of his lack of strength that Nehru, and by extension the INC, became such softies unable to make the hard decisions. This weakness has cost India so much in the long run in the form of Kashmir, the separation of India into India and Pakistan, India's loss to China in 1962, etc. I am honestly disgusted by the amount of misinformation spread in India.

I am not religious. But it is almost certain Jesus did exist. He just happened to be so inspirational that people believed in him to be a deity and his people produced all of the qualities we know of him today.

Mahatma Gandhi was not the best orator, his speeches were quite ordinary, he was more a man of action than words.
The real orator during the Indian National Struggle was Jawaharlal Nehru. Speeches like the trust with destiny shook the world and inspired Indians all over the country. It’s no surprise that he was our prime minister for three terms. He was just so charismatic.

It doesn't hold up to what the Pharaohs achieved but we measure leaders by the longevity of their achievements. The Roman rule of law, farming, irrigation, coinage, even government still influences today's society. Much of it is owed to Julius Caesar.
