That big hammer made short work of forging the handle. I appreciate it when you go in depth about metallurgy. Your channel has shown me its importance and that it is worth researching. Great work as always!
Most good Parang do have atleast some distal taper in blade and tang though as it helps in snap cutting and chopping as well by increasing speed of the blade in use :)
Who the hell thumb downed this? What an ass. Fella did a great job. I am a professional knife maker Rice Road Knife Works and I like this guy's work. I guess haters gonna hate. I think your work is fantastic brother
Instead of 150lbs of chain around your anvil, have you tried Jason knights trick? Sitting your anvil and anvil mount in a puddle of silicone, I recent did this and my anvil is very quiet. I'll get back to watching your video now.
No, I haven't, but I do like having my anvil spiked down solid to the stump, it seems to provide better mass/ rebound, as my larger anvil that isn't solid to the stump doesn't have the same rebound
@@FireCreekForge gotcha. I was surprised at how dead it makes my anvil. The only ringing or noise that you get may be on the horn but usual use is very quiet. Great work though brother. I appreciate the content
Nice build. What part of Texas are you in and are you part of the Texas Knife Guild? Have you ever worked with Jim or Bill Poor? Sorry for all the questions just an inquisitive guy I guess.
@@FireCreekForge Jason Fry lives in Lubbock he’s the president of TKG. You’ve got some skills brother. I do mainly stock removal and have been at it for nearly two years. But it doesn’t keep me from still being a collector and user of others blades I admire. Keep up the great work and thanks for taking us along for the journey.
Isn't that phenolic block you used for the handle? Be careful with the dust mate we used that shit on aircraft and we were supposed to use a respirator when drilling through or sanding it.
@@FireCreekForge thanks man, the problem is there is no 5160 barstock here in the philippines, i use leafspring and dont know if its 5160 or what it doesnt make a good edge
Perfect design.
The new hammer is working beautifully.
Yes it is, thanks!
I love this style of chopper! Great work man!
Thanks man!
Now I need to make a chopper. Haha. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome Job man some day I will forge choppers.

Beautiful choppa. Great informative video. I really appreciate all the pointers.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice work man, and I agree with your handle thesis. Simple and efficient !
Thank you!
Nice chopper!! It’s definitely gratifying forging with tooling you’ve made yourself. 🔥⚒💪🏻
Thank you, yes it is!
Great chopper brother. I truely appreciate your depth of knowledge too. Keep up the good work sir.
Thank you!
Love the rough finish on that.
Thanks, I like the forged finish..
Oy, I really should have used the proper word as it reflects your work a lot better. Thanks for always teaching.

Looks great I like that! Great job making it!
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Good lookin chopper.. Thor will be looking for his hammer ..
Thanks! Haha yeah
Have a swedish custom chopper in 8670 at 61 hrc. Would be fun to compare it to this hehe
8670 is a great steel too, as I understand.
@@FireCreekForge yes sir. It very thin 0.25mm at the shoulder of the edge and i freehamd sharpend it to 5k and its a pretty damn good user
Do you have any of these made up, I love your videos by the way, I’m in Alaska and would love a parang

The stage between hardened and hot when you can fix warps is known as the super plastic state.
As always, nice build! I appreciate the as-forged approach to grinding. About to do a seax pretty much the same way.
Cool man, thanks for watching

I posted before I saw you sanding it WITH a respirator lol.
It’s hard to get it to spread out
is that 5160 or sup9? Whats the difference
They are the same
@@FireCreekForge ok thanks but they say sup9 has a little less carbon .5 5160 has .6 carbon

So 5160 is not a great steel for hunting or skinning knives?
It would be okay, but there are steels that are better suited, which will provide better edge retention
Oh ok so like 1080 or 1095 would be better, nice thanks for the tip
A cross peen hammer is a “regular” hammer...
Yeah, I meant one without a peen
