I am forging the sword from the movie 300 right now so I will do a cut test for you with this one unless of course someone offers to pick it up before it's done. Times are tough all around the world right now, when money is on the table you do what's needed. stay safe and healthy my friend! Cheers

    What do you mean by annealing the steel??

    • @Aleeknives
      @Aleeknives  2 роки тому +1

      Annealing steel brings it back to a soft workable state before you harden it. It gives all your abrasives a break!

  • @Ivegotwormsinme
    @Ivegotwormsinme 3 роки тому +1

    Since it seems like no channel that I watch where someone is using a forge can give an accurate representation of how long it takes to heat metal, please indulge me.
    How long did it take for that piece of steel to get hot enough for you to work it?
    I'm assuming the first time you put it in the forge it takes much longer than putting it back in, right? What's the time-frame on after the first heating?
    Thanks, man!

    • @Aleeknives
      @Aleeknives  3 роки тому

      You jave brought up an excellent point! I tend to run my videos longer than other channels also! But I still can't squeeze it all in a single video without cutting a lot out during the editing process. To answere your question. There are several variables that affect the answere. Every forge heats up differently and also insulates the heat differently. Each different steel needs to be forged at different temperatures. Let's make this easy though. 1084 steel, heat it till it glows orange and almost yellow then start forging. It takes about 10 minutes in my forge on full blast to get my steel this hot. You are correct that it heats back up quicker due to 2 facts the forge is now up to heat and the steel retains some heat. Stop forging the steel as soon as the orange fades and return ot to the forge! I am making a new forging video this week! It will release on Sunday! I hope to see you there!

      I am using a KMG from beaumont metal works for the vertical, an AMK for the horizontal and a homemade disc setup running the beaumont metal works 1 degree bevel 9 inch disc. There are a ton of good grinders on the market today! I would do some research into something that can switch between vertical and horizontal to save space. I do enjoy having 2 dedicated rigs though.
