Santa Cruz holds a special place in my heart. Growing up there, I have fond memories of fishing on the Wharf as a kid and, later, busking as an adult, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere, delicious restaurants, and stunning views. One moment that stands out is from the winter of '62 when I saw a large sailboat washed ashore on the beach nearby. It was a powerful reminder of the beauty and might of nature-a lesson Santa Cruz has always been good at teaching.

The section that collapsed was in the middle of a $4 mil annual repair process. Possibly the storm hit at a bad moment in the process or the company did something wrong in the process. The City replaces 10-30 piling on the pier every year to protect it and have made complete overhaul plans for the pier. However, locals keep suing to stop every plan the City comes up with because the plan might " change the character of the pier" FFS. Government isn't always the solution, but neither is it always the problem.

To me that sounds really really dumb because I always think it is only a matter of time before the whole thing collapses esp in this kind of weather. I won't work there or have a business there. BTW, these businesses have made millions and millions overmso many years. It is not like these business owners are going to be in any financial trouble. This is wild isn't it. Now the whole wharf has to shut down. This will affect my Marini's candy shop one of my favorite stores. Sad. My friends in Manresa said they are seeing lots of debris there. They saw a huge piling like a telephone pole with big railroad spikes and sharp barnacles on it. They are telling folks not to touch anything. The harbour also got beat up. 👋👱‍♀️🐈🐈🐈‍⬛🐾💕

They were already reconstructing that portion of the wharf, which is why there were construction workers and equipment on it when it collapsed. It was damaged in a storm surge almost exactly a year ago, and they already had to demolish a 50 year old restaurant that had been sitting there. The building that fell in (and which ended up sitting at the mouth of the San Lorenzo River) was a public restroom.
The work was evidently not advanced far enough to shore it up against today's surf.

@rickyhammer6832 That's what they were doing? Because it was physically impossible to fix the top without fixing the bottom first? A lady with her children just stood next to a glass tank. The octopus changed color because he knew he would be fed and it was feeding time. The long tentacles 🦑 almost grabbed the child’s head. Nope some people don’t listen at all. 😔🔑🙅🏻‍♂️
