- Testing the capsize righting bag for SOLO capsize righting of the Hobie FX1 in very light wind. This is a very good test as the FX1 is a heavy single handed boat and notoriously difficult to right after a capsize.

the issue is that when you are 70kg, there is no way that you can right the boat also with the bag...
I'll see if I can find a bigger bag to test.
I have seen a guy on, I guess, a small Dart. Quite windy, he got back upright without too much difficulty, but the over it went on the other side.
My thoughts were if he had used a small sea anchor to hold the bow upwind, he would not have had a problem
I have a buddy (150 lbs) that had terrible trouble getting his 16 and even his ACat back up. Since using a righting bag, he pops them up in a minute. No more issues. He fills it and throws it over his shoulder and straightens up and that's all it takes.
I was amazed the first time that i tried it, how effective it was.
My MacGregor 36 cat came with a righting bag that was used on the end of the spinnaker pole attached to rings on the hulls. Luckily I never had to use it. It was a easy boat to fly a hull in and very controllable.
Are there any systems or ideas for moving weight back and forth while underway, maybe draining and filling a bag? I'm up to 70kg as an adult, but as a string bean kid I used to struggle a lot trying to keep the hull down and weight back on an H18. If I could have pumped water into and out of the rear storage compartments (alternating each time I tacked), or worn a backpack full of water or something, I always thought I could have gotten much better performance. The 'easy' way would have been to bring a heavy friend, I suppose, but that's not always easy.
I get my H18 up solo w my bag. It’s important to me because I do a lots of single handing on big water.

With no safety boat, I think it's essential to carry one.
@RobertSagan-p9f About how much weight between you and the bag for the H18? We have one and I'd like to do more single handed but I wouldn't be able to right it as is.
@@nickf5862 Important question: I’m “bigger than most) … 6’5. 215lbs. Bag is rated at 225lbs but no way is it that the real working load. Probably more like 170ish on the water.

I used to have a Hobie 16, and I would often flip it, even in breaking surf. I had a thick righting-line strung between the hulls against the tramp. I always would get the bows into the wind, and then stand on the hull and lean hard using my righting-line. The wind would get under the sail and free it from the water, and I'd be up and sailing again, no problem.
Yes, that is still the proven method for righting the boat. This is if there's not enough wind to get under the sail or if you don't have enough weight to bring it up.
Can you stand on the dagger board like a Laser or is it not strong enough?
The daggerboard isn't strong enough - the cases aren't very strong either.
Do you try to go to rear of the hull ? I have tested it, and it work better than the middle.

That video came at the right moment. I just got a hobie 14 with the buoy on top of the mast and I was wondering how much weight I need to right it. I am just shy of 70 kilos and 180 tall, so I guess I need a bag. Have you got a ballpark figure how much weight I would need?

I have a smaller bag on my big bag, 70liter and fill it completely up with this smaller bag, then I will hold only the big bag away from the boat and it will Come back....but not with my shoulder, I will look to the bag and hold it so far away I can. So I won't carry the weight myself, it will completely carry by the boat.....I will right up a topcat k2 and a ahpc capricorn on this way, thanx for your really nice demonstration, have a nice day to everybody
That's a very cool. Nice method - i'll try it!
I use a home made one all the time. I don't have any block and tackle for it but its kinda necessary because once you pull the boat a third of the way over, the bag goes in the water and you lose the weight. So its nice to be able to pull on the rope and keep hoisting it up higher to keep pulling the boat over. I just have to come back in and reset the bag a little higher if that happens.

it seems like a pole extended out in place of your body would be a better way to get leverage. You need two lines to brace it, but you should be able to do that and gain greater advantage
Yeah, I think after some more head scratching I will see if I can do something with a pole to push the bag out. That seems like it would be much easier.
@@danieldonaldson8634 I had that system once…didn’t work well for me. Bag works for me. Your mileage may differ
